At 38:45 La Caccia (The chase). Cuchillo running thru the tall grass. The posse chasing him. Baron von Schulenberg's cape flowing in the wind. The scene without music would not have been much. With the music and Maria's voice, it was sensational.

it was common in HK movies from the 70s and 80s to rip off Morricone's music. Most John Liu movies feature them [secret rivals 1 and 2, mars villa etc] elevates them, though its piracy.

"The Big Gundown" is not Ennio Morricone's best Western soundtrack, mostly because it is the reworking of a single theme song ("Run, Man, Run") for most of the movie. Because of that, it is not on par with the Morricone music created for the Sergio Leone directed films, which had numerous character themes and epic gunfight music that are more powerful. However, Morricone's work on "The Big Gundown" offers a better soundtrack than the Sergio Leone produced "My Name is Nobody." That being said, there is a fistful of memorable musical moments in "The Big Gundown" that will linger after the movie ends. Parts of the score are among the composer's masterworks. The main theme, in various forms, conjures up the heart and thundering hooves of horses running at full gallop. It's hard not to feel the adrenaline rush and spirit of the Old West. When belted out by Maria Cristina Brancucci, "Run, Man, Run" hauntingly conveys the desperation of its characters. Morricone also offers a terrific hoedown version of the song on the soundtrack that gets better with every listen. He also offers "LA CONDANNA" where he interweaves classical music with a Spanish guitar to significant effect, even if the song eventually offers no build-up or pay-off. The final gunfight music is strangely generic for Morricone, although the raw horn sound builds tension. Other parts of his soundtrack are reminiscent of other films. For instance, Morricone would later revisit some of the Spanish guitar fills and experimental animal noise ideas used in "The Big Gundown" in "Two Mules for Sister Sara." Never the same, mind you. But you get a sense as to where he's going musically. Overall, "The Big Gundown" is arguably Lee Van Cleef's best spaghetti western film outside of Leone's "For a Few Dollars More" and "The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly" and Morricone's soundtrack certainly helps the film achieve that distinction. If there is any criticism, its that director
Sergio Sollima got a little messy with his overuse of the music during action sequences that weren't as exciting as Morricone's score. Lastly, one wonders why Sergio Leone didn't utilize Van Cleef more, especially after Eastwood decided not to do spaghetti westerns anymore. Seems like missed opportunities.

Sou brasileiro.
