I think the "stoner" label for Green lung is inaccurate. I get that sonically, especially as you mentioned with the guitar tone, that there's some crossover there, but the double entendre you pointed out in their name may not be intentional. I cannot recall a single theme or lyric from any of their music that references marijuana, getting high or being stoned. The band name is a reference to the fact that the public parks in the bands hometown of London are referred to as "green lungs". From the get-go this band was heavily leaning into rural, medieval and ancient Britain for their lyrical themes. Their original two track demo has "Green Man Rising" in which the green is the symbol of wild magic, not marijuana. The second track, which was retooled and put on their debut, is about leaving the city for life in the wild.
That being said, the Rainbow, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep mentions are spot on. I remember once they mentioned in an interview that on Black Harvest that they were thinking to themselves, what if we made it sound like Boston, but evil? :-D

“Live slow. Never die. I’ll spend an eternity getting high.” - Living Fossil, Free the Witch EP
The references are there but not often. It’s definitely not their focus.
That said, yes I do agree with you. Stoner is such a broad term these days it’s practically meaningless as a descriptor. I think the categorization comes from there just being a lack of a better one. At this point, a modern group with retro hard rock/heavy metal elements is usually broad stroked as either Stoner Doom or NWOTHM. And while I think Green Lung has elements from both, they do lean more on the occult stoner doom side of the fence.

I typically see eye to eye with Sarah's takes, but yeah, I had to shake my head at "stoner doom" to make sure I even heard that right. Other than the somewhat 'stoney name' there are very few parallels between Green Lung and the mainstays of stoner doom (vis a vis Sleep, Electric Wizard, Monolord, Windhand, etc.), other than *maybe* an Iommi inspired guitar tone. But if we're going say an Iommi-an guitar tone = stoner doom, then Stoner Doom is going to suddenly become the biggest sub-genre in metal. The keyboards, the multilayered vocal harmonies, the lack of drug references, lack of excessive drone & feedback, the lack of 8 minute opus tracks, all suggest that this isn't stoner doom. No, if anything Green Lung is revivalist 70's occult rock with various nods to musical progression that's occurred along the way. Kind of like what Ghost seems to be aiming for, except, you know ... good (BOO YAH!). Also curious how one could like this and not like Black Harvest. The production is improved on Heathen Land for sure, but it's definitely expanding upon the style of the previous record (and Black Harvest is so. frickin. GOOD.).

This is a really good review. I ran across this band/album last week via the CZcams rabbit-hole and have been listening to it nonstop, but found myself pretty disappointed that their other albums and some of the other bands recommended by CZcams didn't click for me in the same way. I think this review articulates really well why that is and I'm looking forward to trying out some of the stuff she mentioned.

I really love it, hard to pick a favorite between the 3 albums and the ep.
But I really love this because it sounded different compared to the ones in the past. I really love when a band evolves to sound different. But I really enjoy this.
    Underrated and awesome band!

I've recently heard the new album and knew I had to buy the album after only one listen. This group keeps getting better after every release. I'm not to big on stoner rock eather. but I do like a few groups. But I love 70's and 80's style rock and metal from that era. I've always loved Rainbow and Deep Purple also. This new release is a really great album and mixture of the 70's style with a more modern production. Great song writting, everything just fits into place just right. They are getting more tighter with every release I can definitely tell. Black Harvest was definitely a great release for only being their 2nd. Album. These guys are very talented musicians and song writers.
I love an album where each song has its own identity but still sounds like the same group. I really love their sound they have been creating over the last two releases. One of my top ten albums of the year for 2023 for me. I will definitely be following these guys more closely for their next releases. Great review Ms. Metal lady.🤘

Thank you, Sarah and crew - was hoping you'd all give this album a run. You're right that stoner died around '08 but it was given the cardiopulmonary action, revivified single- and highhandedly by the Green Lungs. Scott Black on guitar. He's not just strummink - he's opening a riff up, regorging Blackmore's darkest draws and giving the full fretboard to an unholy sonic space. Second Lung album I was a bit meh about. But this! The heathen albion stuff they've really made a dive into - for full theatrics - the Brits are great at Theatre and histrionics and nasal folk projectile slinging of song. DYNAMIC!

Hi. I just bought all three albums. Been listening 24/7 since Christmas.
Louder is better. Huge fan now!!
To me, “this heathen land” is (seemingly) the most well thought out album. But I find it lacks a bit of the more immediate heartfeltness and nerve of “Black Harvest” -which is -at the moment- my favorite.
“Woodland Rites” has some of the most kick ass soloing sound. Dirty. Screeching.
Some very very emotional, well written sounding tracks.
The lyrics on all three albums is great and delivered with presence and finesse. Excellent story telling.
    Cheers!
    Great band.
Looking very much forward to another album in the future. Keep it up guys.

I honestly think the judgment of them as "stoner" is missing the mark... They have very few allusion to smoking weed and are way more about occultist and nature worship, with a great amount of tongue in cheek.
I really think that GL, despite superficially sounding quite traditional, have added a new feel to the genre of old school Doom. Something lush and rich.

A very good review. I think you explain in a very understandable way what to expect here.
While I haven’t listened myself to the new album yet, I share your sentiments about this band up until this release. It’s a band that on paper should be really good if you like this kind of music, but in practice come off as quite bland and boring. The other bands you mentioned, Elder and Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, produce far more interesting music.
Also, I saw someone else commenting here that they are a great live band. I would disagree. I saw them four times last year when they were opening for Clutch on their European tour, and I thought their shows were pretty underwhelming.
Anyway, based on your review I’ll definitely pick up their new album and give them another chance.

I prefer this album 3rd in the bands catalog, as this heavy keys and vocal delivery style really sound like later Ghost worship, which doesn’t do it for me at all. Id probably dig this w a more gravelly deeper vocalist. ‘Stoner’ music in general usually stays at good instead of reaching great heights due to nasally vocals. My opinion. Still some dope songs.
