Professor James Murray begins work compiling words for the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary in the mid 19th century, and receives over 10,000 entries from a patient at Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum, Dr. William Minor.

The film is a real masterpiece . Watching this film is as much an aesthetic pleasure as the immortal works of Shakespeare. A professor and a madman. Scottish and American. Together they create a colossal work-the Oxford English Dictionary. Sean Penn brilliantly played the role of the repentant, mentally ill Dr. Chester Minor. And when you see this will, this working enthusiasm, which is embodied on the screen by Mel Gibson as James Murray, then you yourself begin to get infected with this passion, this love for the great English language. English is the Latin of the modern world. The language of logic, beautiful and noble. The language of progress, the language of the future. Love English, read more classics, improve, speak beautifully. Language is everything.

I think it's a bit sad how many people are like "it's about a dictionary?" - a) it's more than that, because it has a lot to do with crime and the history of mental health institutions (though I have to admit the trailer doesn't do those parts much justice) and b) our written language should not be taken for granted. A standard version of written languages has only been around for 100 to 200 years. And these people did a mad job of compiling tens of thousands of entries way before the internet or even telephones were a common thing. This real story is a tribute to the love of knowledge and wisdom, and I think we could use some more of this nowadays.

Mel Gibson is always involved with some of the best stories. He is a fantastic writer and director. He does a great acting job every time as well.
Two legends together, wouldn't miss it for the world.
Really good movie. Literate, moving and with superb performances by Mel Gibson, Sean Penn and Natalie Dormer. Was initially hesitant to see it because of negative reviews by the professional critics, but the overwhelming positive reviews by ordinary moviegoers inspired me to give it a try. Hollywood is never going to forgive Gibson for his drunken outburst, but a work of art should be judged by its own merits. 4/5.
This is a masterpiece. A story about love, forgiveness and human redemption. If you don’t appreciate this you are a fool. This is about how love can trascend pain, hate, intellect, madness, reason (excuse my english). Making dictionaries is badass. The impossible task of documenting human existence through words. The ones you use every day to comunícate, don’t take that shit for granted. If you think that is boring you are wrong. The work those people put into that is hard. The incredible performances in this film are amazing, and the story is compelling, we need more of this in theaters. Real life stories about hope for humanity. Other wise we are wasting our time. Not everything has to have visual effects to be attractive, just two good beards and good story telling. From begining to end this is great. It’s not about entertaining, it’s about real art, and that takes thinking and empathy to understand some one alses point of view. Amazing film.

This movie has exceeded all my expectations. The storyline and the directing are very captivating in every aspect. Very inspiring too.
The trailer is not doing it justice.
Also, Sean Penn's performance is incredible to say the least.
If you are a teenager looking for an action movie don't go to this one and then criticize it. This is a MASTER PIECE for those who appreciate history. Great movie to watch and loved the act.
I read the book years ago. Only realised this movie had been made a week ago. What a fabulous movie! I watch aot of movies and I would say this has been the most beautifully filmed but heart breaking movie I have seen this past year. I wish I had the Oxford dictionary beside me so I could explain in words how Wonderful this movie is. I dont understand why it didn't get the recognition it deserves

Mel Gibson reminds me of my dad.
I loved my dad and always will.
My dad was catholic.
He worked outdoors.
His son died at age 14 from Hodgkin a form of cancer.
My dads heart was shredded that day 2-20-62. My dad nickname was Cadillac Jack...after he retired he drove cars for dealerships. He loved to travel.
So when I see Mel Gibson face Im flooded with heartwarming memories of my dad.
I will watch every Mel Gibson movie.

I really like Simon Winchester’s books, having read four. I just started in on “Professor” and looking forward to seeing the film. A most riveting book it is!
Hollywood is running out of ideas fast but to see Gibson and Penn in these roles might just be amazing..

I can't wait to see it! I'm 56 and I remember seeing Sean Penn as Spicoli in "Fast Times At Ridgemont High". Never in a million years would I have thought he would be such a great and prolific actor. Boy he showed me! Mel Gibson is also magnificent. Two of the best. Gotta see this one!

I went to the Theater to watch this. I don't know why I felt compelled to watch it, but I don';t regret it. It is a wonderful movie. One I will gladly add to my collection.

After a long time truly enjoyed an epic movie...Mel, Sean, and Natalie are amazing actors, I was lost in their world.
Five Stars. An absolutely stunning performance (drama) by Mel Gibson, Sean Penn, Jennifer Ehle, and Natalie Dormer. Cinamaphotography is gorgeous. The producer was Iranian Farhad Safinia. Best film my wife and I have seen in years. The film became entangled in strange legal battles, thus blunting its release. We highly recommend the film.

Whoa! I bought this book at a used-book store about a couple of years ago. Found it on one of the shelves where people don't bother to go because all of the other books there are like crap. It was even on sale and I got it for less than a dollar! Best sale I ever did! I will be watching this for sure!

Wow. I read the book, because Simon Winchester is a great author. I didn't think it would be made into a movie, but it deserves to be. Simon's other works include The Day the World Exploded. About Krakatau, worthy of a movie. Also, A Crack at the Edge of the World, about the San Francisco earthquake.

I'm usually a Sci-fi /Horror fanatic, but this is beautifully scripted and acted (Gibson and Penn give impeccabile performances) This is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time.
I loved the book.but it covered so much more.the human factor,his family,the telephone?excellent...cannot wait.
