    These guys hate Honda's . They have been bought by Yamaha. CBR650f 0-60 3.5 seconds, Top Speed 150, has fairings wind protection for highway riders, Smoother and more stable at highway speeds. Much Quieter. Gastank 4.6 gallons. 50 mpg 230 mile range MT07 0-60 3.73 , Top Speed 133, no fairings, its more jerky and less stable. Gas tank 3.7 Gallons. 55mpg 203 mile range. I'll take this Honda CBR650F over an MT07 any day.

      It 's a good comparison to my older 2008 Suzuki GSX650F. For my first motorcycle finally, after owning 80-500cc dirtbikes from age 13 to age 43 two years ago when I bought it, I really enjoy this m/c. I like that my GSX650F has a gear indicator, fuel gauge, 4-way flashers & a nice 5.0 gallon fuel tank. It has an 86 HP / 45.5 LB-FT 656cc Inline-4 with a 12,500 rpm redline. I just wish it had ABS. The 2009 model has it, but I don't like the lighter blue of the 2009+ models.

  • @rajmoran
    @rajmoran Před 6 lety +364

    I don't need a gear position indicator, really. I just need a light that says, "you're in sixth, dummy." Except it shouldn't say "dummy" because that would be hurtful.

      You're right that nobody really "needs" a gear indicator because at least most of us riders can count from 1-6. But at this day and age, with the way technology has advanced so far and you can source a nice LCD screen for cheap or even an analog setup with some regular button style lights that indicate the gear is a must for any bike that isn't considered "pretty low budget". Like I wouldn't expect it on a brand new $4500 bike... But maybe $6000+ it's kind of inexcusable. (even though I agree for most riders it's not even necessary).

    I absolutely love my 2015 Honda CBR650F non-ABS model. It’s been a great step-up bike for me. Fantastic bike delivers just the amount of sportiness to suit me and keeps me honest and focused out on the road. Add a tank bag and some saddle bags and hit the road with 45+ average MPG even with the saddle bags on. I’m considering an Airhawk to possibly stretch some time in the saddle. But I don’t regret having to stop for a break to stretch my legs every so often. I nearly always am eager to get back on the bike, flip the switch and get back on the road. Honda put the right amount of magic smoke in this model to blend a respectable amount of performance along with reliability. This bike is still big enough to really scare yourself on if you don’t respect it, but it’s been an amazing bike for me to continue to enjoy learning how to ride on. Enjoy and ride safe everyone!

    I got this bike to get back into riding after a bad crash in my teens. I was 30 when I got it and I’m 35 now and have over 13,000 miles. I love this as a daily driver. I just got a zx10r as my weekend toy/adrenaline dump. But I ride this every day unless there’s a hurricane (I live in the Florida panhandle) it’s more than fast enough for a beginner bike and fast enough to keep it in an enthusiasts collection. I got the 2015 cbr 650 fa. Me being a beginner and a sport bike fan, I like the bike very much! Rode a cbr 1000 rr the other day and the cbr 650 fits me way better. I like the power delivery, the corner handling, the fuel efficiency and the looks obviously. I just really like the whole package. I think it's a good bike to learn riding on, without having to sacrifice the Sportbike feel. Last week I rode with a couple of guys and they told me: "This is a Sportbike!", even though I thought it was more like a sport tourer, but it has the reception of a sport bike. If you ask me and you look for a great first bike, get the cbr 650 fa. Mine has abs, I got it for 5800€, 3 years old, pristine condition and I couldn't be happier. This is one of those bikes that fits into that category of middle weight 600 beginner ish type bikes. Like the Yam FZ6R it has four cylinders while others in the class have 2. IMO, the thing that holds this model back from the others is the price. We can argue all day long about looks and character, but if you were to assemble all of these bikes together with your friends and went for a ride, they would all do well. These are great bikes for people who are not yet ready to ride a big,heavy, powerful liter bike or above. Good at just about everything.....

    Zack, great commute/review vid as usual! A couple requests for topics to mention during your rides if you could please: Ambient temp during ride, any engine/radiator heat blowing on your legs or wafting up onto the happy parts, airflow at your helmet smooth/quiet/turbulent/loud, and of course how bad does the seat suck. These are my three biggest concerns regarding comfort when considering a bike - I've had so many bikes that roast my legs and/or privates, loud and turbulent airflow off the screen, and seats that are little more than a vinyl wrapped cement block. Engine performance, braking, and handling are of course important, but if you can't stand to be on the bike for more than 15 minutes, or it roasts your various body parts as soon as the thermometer hits 80degF, then the bike is useless except for track days.

    I own the 2018 model, and I must say that even though the newer 650R is on the market, the 2018 CBR650F remains a great purchase due to its price (they have practically the same engine) and features.
    In Europe, for the A2 license, it’s one of the few remaining 4-cylinder bikes. It’s a perfect bike for beginners, especially if you like sport bikes. This will help you transition later to something more powerful (like the 600RR or 1000RR) without too much difficulty when you get the A license. Although it’s quite docile, it’s a powerful and fast bike while still being comfortable. The engine is forgiving and won’t give you any scares, but when you exceed 5000-6000 rpm, it really gives you a thrill.
    Certainly, I won’t discredit other models like the Ninja 650 or the MT-07. I’ve gone on rides with friends who have the MT, and it’s a fantastic bike. But this is a matter of taste, and if you like 4-cylinders, you’ll probably be willing to sacrifice a bit of torque to hear this machine scream.
    Other than that, I agree with the cons (little buzzy over 4500-5000 rpm, no gear indicator and old display…). And I will add that you need to get a full exhaust system if you want to improve the sound ($$).

    Nice looking bike, as customary for Honda.
    The gauge cluster isn't to my taste, but it displays all the relevant information clearly.
    Good size tank, theoretically makes for a longer time between fuel stops, but in reality you're probably going to be filling up just as often.
    I did expect it to be a little heavier than the middleweight Twins, but not that much heavier.
    Pricing, now there's the sticking point. Even with the better resale value of Honda's, MSRP alone makes the CBR650F a non-starter for me.
    Ultimately I'll be sticking with my Ninja 650.
    Thanks for the Video and Review.

    • @hvymtal8566
      @hvymtal8566 Před 6 lety

      By the numbers yeah, but you're buying an older bike with less comfortable ergos and a higher engine stress level, where as the 650 is new, under warranty, more reliable due to being under-stressed, and by virtue of not having as much power you can use what you do have more, and it takes a little longer to get into stupid territory. If you want a fast bike, the 600RR is still here, though it in itself is kinda like an 09 RR that looks worse but is under warranty, and is itself a bit disappointing. I think Honda is going in the right direction by shifting focus to more well-suited street bikes, but they're not there yet

That's why I'm so effing curious to see what your thoughts on the FZ6R are. =P Now that price tag makes me think Honda abuses their clients. When I got my FZ6R (used), you could still get a new one. The FZ6R, the Ninja 650, the GSX 650F and the CBR 650F were VERY similar, but the Honda was about 20% more expensive, with absolutely nothing special to make up for that price difference. Anyway... I've test ridden the Honda and Yamaha and found the Yamaha more fun; it was easier to turn in while engine seemed quicker to spin up. Slight edge in brakes and suspension to the Honda, but not enough for the price difference.

    Feb 2020... walked into dealership and saw a new 2018 650F... Walked out the door paying $7002 including tax++ . For that price... this bike is the bomb... so comfortable too... and yes it can be a bit buzzy in the nether region at 6k but it's more like an "Oooh that's interesting" rather than a dealbreaker. This bike is in a class of it's own. Twins to me sound so frikkin cheap n raggity like a dirt bike. Like hearing a 4banger car or a V8. I give him props to say though it's not for him...there's nothing wrong with it. His beef in the end is the price compared to what he prefers...which is his bias. There's no accounting for taste. When I was younger, I had a CBR600F3 and now being 48, I have a 2014 Harley Breakout pushing 100HP along with the 650F. Every other ride, I switch up. Love them both. I find it amusing that people keep bitching about "overweight and underpowered" when the Honda has one of if not the highest P/W of its competitors. The only one that beats it outright is Ducati which cheats by upping the displacement by 150cc, using super light materials, and sacrificing reliability and price, and the only one that matches it is the MT-07. It's not trying to be a 600cc supersport
    People also seem to forget that the person who buys this kind of bike generally doesn't give a shit about numbers and buy the bike because it fits what they want out of a bike quite well. Humans are not "rational actors" and if they don't like the best value bike then it's not really an option, is it?

      It's where it makes the power. If it lags for 80 percent of the entire power band then surges right before redline, then that is less usable power. Yeah, a ninja 650 is only like 70 horsepower, but it more of it available for more of the powerband. I'm not a Honda hater, I'm just saying why people say what they say.

I purchased the 2016 model of the CBR650F non ABS in flat black/candy red in 2017 on sale, this being the second bike I've owned. I bought this bike not only for commuting, but as something I could have fun on the weekends with my friends. There's quite a few reasons I chose this bike over the Ninja 650, Yamaha FZ6R or MT07, or the SV650. Biggest one being noise, I don't typically like two cylinders. Sound plays a big part in my enjoyment of the bike I own, so the Ninja is out (even firing twin sounds bad to me). Next being comfort, like I said, I needed to commute on this machine and the seat on the MT07 was terrible, although it was quite narrow and fairly low to the ground, it has a "lip" on the front of the seat which, for someone like me who has shorter legs, I need to scoot forward in the seat at a light to flat foot it, which is uncomfortable if you're a male. Now it wasn't necessary for me to be able to flat foot the bike but, if I'm gonna spend ~$8K on a motorcycle, I want it to be everything I want in a motorcycle, right? Next factor being looks. Although I do love a good naked bike the Suzuki just wasn't quite doing it for me, and I think when it comes to looks, it's entirely biased. Different strokes for different folks I suppose. Now the last bike to choose from in this category was the FZ6R, which if I'm being honest, is the most comparable bike the the CBR in terms of looks, power, and comfort. Simple fact is, I was able to get a better price for the CBR than I could on the FZ6. At the time, the FZ6 was a '17 model, or at least it was new to the dealership, I can't quite remember. The CBR had a hefty $1K taken off the sale price because it was a year old and they were rolling in the 2018s in a few months at the Honda dealership. They literally told me they were just trying to get rid of it. Now, I still would've happily payed a couple hundred more bucks to get the Honda because, in my personal opinion, it's a better bike than the FZ6 in almost every way. My first bike was an '83 CB650 that I absolutely adore, and because of that fact, it played a big part in what bike I chose to ride next. However, say for instance I owned and old Kawi Z650, Yamaha XS, or even a Suzuki GS, I believe I still would've chosen the Honda for the reasons I've listed above.
    Here's a short list of what I like and dislike about the '16 CBR650F
    Pros:
    -Comfortable neutral riding position
    -usable power (decent low end torque and good top end horsepower)
    -standard sport bike tires (SV650 uses 160 instead of 180 for rear)
    -easy to maintain (oil changes, chain tightening/lube)
    -mileage (I typically get 40-45 MPG if I drive like a grandma; ~30 if I'm having fun)
    Cons:
    -lack of gear indicator or temp gauge
    -one piece exhaust
    -suspension (really stiff and unforgiving on bad roads)
    [EDIT]
    -transmission (I wish 6th gear was overdriven so it was possible to cruise on the freeway @80mph and still get ~40mpg)

      @Im_George Před 6 lety +1

      In my opinion, you definitely went with the better bike. What mostly sold me, is while the most expensive, it's also the fastest of all the bikes in it's class. For example, the fz6 you mentioned only has 63 hp and 36 ft/lb of torque, while the 650f is at 86/46. They even increased it to 90 for 2018 model. Saw plenty videos at the time of the cbr always being ahead in comparison races. The way I saw it, you get close to SuperSport power while being comfortable. The other cheaper bikes, more of a boost from a 500
      And I'm pretty jealous you got that color. It's impossible to find brand new. That coloring style was what sold me even more.

      @MattB613 Před 6 lety

      Honestly I probably wouldn't have bought it if the dealer didn't have it in that color. Like I said in my original comment, it was to be my second bike, so I might have gone with something bigger. But, I'm happy with my purchase. I'll keep it for another few years.

    As an owner my complaints are...
    1.Wasted space on the gauges.(which was kinda pointed out)
    Gear position indicator and actual temp. reading would've been cool.
    2. No USD fork. It's 2018... Honda put USD forks on the Grom, but not this. (??) I'm sure they coulda carried over the forks from the '05 600RR.
    3. Fuel tank. . .when the gauge is down to 1 lil flashing cube, and screamin for a fill up, I barely get 2.5 gallons in it.
    I consider it a "sport commuter". Real comfy, but tank gets only about 120 miles. I've pushed it to 125, but thats being conservative with the throttle.
    Mods. Ohlins rear shock, and spring kit in the front.
    Venhill braided lines.
    And oh yeah. . . I took off those god awful foot pegs, and put on a pair from a crashed 2015 1K RR. they fit no problem.

    Had a couple cruiser bikes, rode a Ninja 650 a few times. And rode an old Radian 600 (liked the surprise power at the top end on that bike). Ninja bars were too close and upright for my long arms, and the power seemed way too linear even for a novice like me so there was never any surprise power with it at the top end. Would like something sporty enough to give you more when you want it, and enough of a forward lean that at my typical 65mph commute Im not fighting to stay on or have wrist pain. Although a bit more than the others, it seems like a good "wont kill you quick" sportier bike for a 50 year old that doesn't have 30 years experience. (more like 4). Great reviews you do! I have this bike and I am fully satisfied for street use, even the odd sporty but legal ride and a daily commute.
    The small inline 4 beats every thumper and twin regarding versatility up to relaxed riding while still retaining some reserves in legal traffic. It is unobtrusive and compliant if driven with some feeling and reminiscent of it's limits. If you buy this for the looks and then complain it is no R or RR - well. No. It is not. And it was never meant to be.
    It is unfortunately the only option left for someone looking for an affordable sub-750 inline 4 with fairings and a more relaxed approach to riding than a R(R) while still being a hunch sportier than a pure naked.
    I also bet against 95% of all the ppl who complain about this bike's power, weight ratio, torque, non-adjustable fork etc. that they believe themeselves to be street Rossi while unable to ride even this bike close to it's limit.

    this bike should be compared against the fz6r. both are inline 4, half naked, similar front end, mpg, and heavy weight. but the fz is $1k cheaper. imo, inline 4 sport tourings are made for commuters that want that high reving noise from their engine. As a fz6, fz1, iron 1200 owner, engines that make better torque in the lower revs and are more fuel efficient (parallel/v twins/triple/boxer) are better for commuters and it is more fun bc the power comes on early which is where we spend most of our time riding at.

    I had this bike in matte black 2015 model year with ABS. Its was a nice bike, very reliable and easy to ride. However, the seat was uncomfortable, the bars felt awkward and it was also a somewhat boring bike and lacked the special feeling my other bikes have given me. Something about this bike just felt "dorky" to me. I sold it and got a 2018 Ducati Supersport S, which in no way suffers from being boring. Bottom line: the Honda is a great beginner bike but if you're looking for more fun, power, electronics and style, and willing to spend the extra money and accept the higher overall total cost of ownership, get the Ducati Supersport.

      hey, thanks a lot for your assessment! I recently test rode a ninja 650. beautiful bike but it is just too small for me. it has 68 hp, yet the torque is the same as for the the honda cbr 650f (both around 65Nm) which means that the power of the cbr lies in the higher revs. now the ninja is regarded to be the better entry bike because of its less power. but what I conclude from this is, that if you dont pull the throttle like a maniac on the cbr and stay in low-mid range revs, it should be pretty much the same as the ninja, probably even a bit slower in the low revs since in aint that torquey and has much more weight than the light ninja

      Not really, unless you're matching rev-for-rev the CBR has about 50hp/ton more than the ninja 650 due to having 25% more power, hovering around 82hp up to 90 on a good day. Not a big difference, but the CBR will be a little faster in ideal conditions. The thing witht he CBR is it will have more power up top after the Ninja levels off. The Ninja is probably the better first bike and the CBR is probably the better second bike

    I just picked up this exact bike in the same color. I mostly love it. There's a FEW things I'm not a fan of.
    When you get out on the freeway with 75mph limit, to ME it feels really buzzy above 6k RPM, nearly as buzzy as my former Ninja 650 parallel twin. I find it significantly more comfortable at 5500 or below. Not a fan of the sound of a blender full of bbs. That being said, it does sound much better when it's under load than just cruising. Maybe it's the chain lash or something that makes it seem so buzzy.
    Another thing that I found odd, when first starting it in the mornings to ride to work, I noticed that if you give it any more than ~70% throttle suddenly before it's warmed up good, it kinda chokes and sputters a bit. Not very confidence inspiring, but fortunately it goes away once warmed up.
    Lastly, the shit halogen headlight. The FIRST upgrade I made was an LED unit, because the yellow halogen single bulb is dogshit.
    And I almost forgot, I definitely wish the 6 gears were spaced out a little more. I really appreciate that it has 6 (some motorcycles only have 5), but honestly they really could've spaced them out further and it would be a more comfortable ride. To be able to cruise around at 35mph in 6th seems a bit short geared. If they were to spread them out more and maybe make that 6th gear about 15% taller, that would also help with the buziness at 80mph cruising.
    Those things aside, this really is a great bike, and I really do like it despite those issues.

      Definitley not available for a random MC commute.
      They could try the F3 675 or 800, or regular f4 for a commute. (or long term)
      They did the brutale 800 though :)
      Great motorcycle, but video's comment section ruined it by 1 single lose bolt which droppped the gear lever -_-
      totally overshadows the actual amazing bike.

    Honda > than any American manufacturer. Check the list of race wins Honda have across such a diverse range of racing from road racing to track, world super bikes, Moto GP, Isel of Man TT, enduro, MotoX, Paris Dakar, trials bikes, F1, that American racing whatever it's called, touring cars, boat racing. It's incredible when you look at it.
    I think they've won more bikes races or titles than all other manufacturers added together.

    I got the 2016 version of this and it was the perfect bike for me. I'm coming up from a 125 with nothing in-between I wanted something with enough capacity I could take on the motorway but not be a huge jump from the 125, I don't own a car so this is going to be a daily driver commutercycle and to top it off I got a ridiculous price (just over half the RRP) with 0 miles on the clock. My other options were a new smaller bike or a sportier second hand. having said all that there is nothing in this review I disagree with.

    Nice review I was curious about this bike. Can’t wait until KTM 790 Duke comes to North America, I am very interested in hearing the reviews on that.

    I had a 2016. I found the engine dead under 4000 revs as liked keeping the revs above 7000. I still got 55mpg imperial. I found the mirrors vibey but it's a good bike. For me I sold it as I just always chased the power up top, something I haven't done in 10 years of riding. Very responsible above 7000 rpm and even good from 5500
