Roughly 6 months after an errorless, but maybe not exceptional October 1980 run at the Warfield-Radio City, the GD had an outstanding East Coast Spring 1981 tour with notable shows on May 1st (Hampton), 6th (Nassau), 11th (New Haven)... The video is of very good, for the period, amateur quality.
I added some visual effects on Bird Song, Let it Grow & Terrapin Station ...

Hearing stuff like this from the 80’s almost makes me cry ,,,,it was such a great time and great music ,,, Dead and co are great at times but the vibe is just not the same without Jerry and Bobby together ,,, Amazing !
I feel like its songs like these, and this general era, that proves why Bob Wier is such and underrated guitarist/songwriter.....go fo' it, fo' sho'!!!
Check out the acoustic Heaven Help The Fool from the year before
I have seen all forms of the band , the dead, rat dog, Phil and friends , dead and co, Nothing beats the original! I love this band long live jerry and everyone in the Grateful Dead, I wish Bobby many more years to come ,I’ll be there!
Love em
Dreamy beautiful luscious!
2019 here, still my go-to lost sailor. This tune.... I could go on and on. Bobby songs are sometimes what really make the Dead shine. From the very opening notes they are in a deep groove. Sound quality is supreme. As always, thanks loloyodel
Weir gonna let it shine
So much to watch in this vid, focus on Billy and your mind will be melted. Prime years for he and Mickey imo. They were on another level of sympatico. Hard to ever get my head around it, really magical, they really sound like an eight-limbed drummer. I go around humming the Saint changes to myself sometimes, Bobby had a knack for odd hooks. Great vid, thanks for posting.
Thank you for your great comment
I started my Dead trek in 77 and saw many East Coast shows including this one. My humble opinion 79-81 88-90 were the best years
I can vouch for 89-90 but I was just doing kindergarten in 77. Cheers!
I started in 1988. Following my older brother. Fly in peace Gil .
the grateful dead saved my life again today
I am just sitting here , locked in my house with my earbuds in... Thinking thank god for the Grateful Dead and all the wonderful memories I have.
Yet again! Thankfully
But when that rich wind whines and I see the dark star shine
I got a feeling there's no time to lose, no time to lose
DOG star shine!
@@lancemccormivk6407 Yup. We all got a Dog star. A Dark Star not so much.
Dogstar crashes.. pouring it's light into ashes!
This is a masterpiece!
The beautiful thing is Bobby still does all this stuff and its 2018...♡☆Magic he still rips around like he is 28 years old 30 years later.
Ripping around like he is 28 is what HE'S NOT DOING. LOL I got nothing but love for Bobby, but he's more than showing his age.
@@raysalsedo6981 Thats because 28 is now 82.
I was going on a feeling and it paid off when i found this great upload. Great view of Billy K. TY Lolo
Like a sticky fresh bud found yum yum,
thanks again LOLOYODEL from making yet another of my days..... Very Jerry!!!
Happy Holidays and turn it Up!!!!!!!!
I'm feelin it, the band is rockin on this version!
"lost sailor" 5/13/81 it went perfect in the black and white filming days! sailing is a mystery,u don't know what you will come across, ! my father was a "lost sailor " in the Koren war! excellent song
Weir is a lunatic and probably they best rythm guitar player in the house.
The greatest thing about bein a rockstar is being able to get on stage and get ur point across. To shout out how u really feel. The music part is great but the real advantage is being able to talk to to an audience freely. But Jerry's guitar playing...WOW somethin else. Bless up
I seen them do this at Poplar Creek Il in 83. I was in the first row for half the first set and all of the second. This was done in the second set. I was on Bobby's side. I was so close i could see the sweat shakin off his head. These song's done together like on the album are some of my favorite Dead songs.I always bought lawn seats for outdoor shows and usually danced up to the around the fifteenth or tenth rows but that show was the only show i got up to the first. These will be with me 4ever
I miss these guys so much. I would go back if it was possible.
Was here and at cooking school in town , 6 roomies 2 dartboards, keg on tap always in the refrigerator with mustard . Saw all the local shows and still passed classes. Didn’t sleep much . But hell was 26 then full of energy and great times . Maine to philly and in between .
Bobby and Brent were carrying this song 🎶 for sure.
Wonderful-the gift of music that keeps on giving! Thanks for posting. Regarding the background you provided, I can only say that I loved the four shows at the Warfield that I got to see. I especially enjoyed the opening night which I ushered under the oh so mellow direction of Uncle Bobo and got to sit next to mixing area in the balcony for the second and third sets. (To say nothing of my astonishment at the acoustic set- so no complaints!!!!) Regardless, thanks again!
This is so beautiful!! I love it!! Thank you!!❤
man, powerful, the connection. don't believe these are just songs. its life in music. bobby rocks. awestruck at the triple meanings in these poems set to music. love ya Brent and jerry and the rest. see you some day. thanks for what you guys did for me.
Feeling Dead, Great Track!!
There is a price for being Freeeeeeeeeee! Much love to you Bobby.
drummers are so in sync rhythmically with each other
Audio : indeed SOUNDBOARD recording !
LoloYodel .... hi. / no time Hate. Just pre-she ate
thanks for the awesome vid & info. You might want to include in your info that the audio here is not from the videographer or other member of the audience but is in fact the actual soundboard tape mixed by the dead's soundman as it happened.. just to put the icing on the cake! : )
my god that stella was insane. i cried and then i smiled. oy. somebody help me.
I love this combo of songs and the fellas really nailed it on this night. Thanks much for the post.
I always enjoyed this segue combo. Usually no real jam in between but I like how Sailor starts mellow but builds in enjoy into Saint. Just like his guitar playing, his song writing is unconventional (the music, not the lyrics which he didnt write) and leaves you scratching your head at first, and after deciding its terrible you find the genius in it. Genius maybe is too strong, but it works
When me and my deadhead friends were young and just starting to get into live shows, we noticed that. Especially late 70s early 80s stuff, we talked about how "Bobby tunes" were jazzy. Of course, we didnt really know shit about jazz music then, but its one of the main reasons we all ended up getting interested in jazz music later on.
Great recording! Thanks, Saw them a few weeks before this.
about 2:20 start watching Bobby, it looks as if he vanishes 😃
A peaceful place 2 lay and a few good friends I love by my side
Fantastic!
This and a brand new bag.Peace

Beautiful performance! There's a typo in the description 🙂
OMG!!!! I was here......thank ya frenchie for the memory ( :
My second show of 128.
2021 here. Compass card still spinning. Didn't expect that global pandemic did ya? That's a sight that's rarely seen. A place I'd never been.
Barlow wrote these songs with Bobby? They made some great songs together, Barlow wrote perfect lyrics for Bobby. Also is a super interesting guy.
YES, R.i.p. barlow
not feeling this performance but digging how clear the sound is
Somethin about a grown man really whinin it out always made me...feel alive.
I feel like Bob in this.
EXCELLENT version---I like how the keyboards can be heard clearly---actually, they're a bit louder than Jerry for a change..........
thats for us Brent diggers
Burning!
Compass card is spinning
Helm is swingin' to and fro
Ooh where's the dog star
Ooh where's the moon
You're lost sailor
You've been too long at sea
Some days the gales are howling
Some days the sea is still as glass
Ooh reef the mainsail
Ooh lash the mast
You're lost sailor
You've been too long at sea
Now the shore-lights beckon
Yeah there's a price for being free
Yeah the sea birds cry
There's a ghost wind blowin'
It's calling you to that misty swirling sea
Till the chains of your dreams are broken
No place in this world you can be
You're lost sailor
You've been way too long at sea
Now the shore-lights beckon
Yeah there's a price for being free
Drifting yeah drifting
Yeah drifting and dreaming
'Cause there's a place you've never been
Maybe a place you've never seen
You can hear her calling on the wind
Go on and drift your life away
Yeah just drifting and dreaming
Maybe drift your life away
Drifting and dreaming
Yes I'm going on a dream
Maybe going on a dream
Maybe going on a dream
Maybe going on a dream
This must be heaven, tonight I cross the line
You must be the angel, I though I might never find
Was it you I heard singing, oh, while I was chasin' dreams
Driven by the wind, like the dust that blows around
And the rain fallin' down but I never know
Got to be heaven 'cause here's where the rainbow ends
If this ain't the real thing, then it's close enough to pretend
When that wind blows when the night's about to fall
You can hear the silence call, it's a certain sort of sound
Like the rain fallin' down
Hole's in what's left of my reason, hole's in the knees of my blues
Odds against me been increasin' but I'll pull through
I never could read no road map, I don't know what the weather might do
But when that rich wind whines and I see the dark star shine
I got a feeling there's no time to lose, no time to lose
Never know now, just don't never know, no
Well it's been heaven but even the rainbows will end
Now my sails are fillin' and the wind is willin'
And I'm as good as gone again
I'm still walkin', so I'm sure that I can dance
Just a Saint of Circumstance, just a tiger in a trance
And the rain fallin' down, well, you never know, just don't know
Listen, sure don't know what I going for, but I'm gonna go for it for sure
I remember someone saying Jerry started getting bored in 81 but he doesn’t seem very bored here definitely not moving around much but bob is feeling it for sure.
Yes
Hey now old friends and family members who have been thinking good thoughts about me- thanks for the energy. I am planning to come out of retirement and do summer (maybe spring) tour.
By the way this is Wes from wv and I missed so many of you.I Had to step aside when we lost our leader. Now I'm coming home
HWA members Facebook me
Just wondering if you made it back "Home" as yet??? ~N trust you made it... of course, they still have us on the run. Chasing rabbits ~n dreams no doubt, when we realized our compass was lost... So just working the waterways for now, uncertain if we're ever gonna make it outta here ~n redundancy is keeping us on a dog's leash. Been there done that thing, w/holes in our reason, still lost... So we smoke, ponder, ~n meditate... for your safe travels....
l
Where’s Brent? I can hear him.
MMMagicaal.
dog star... long live the Good Ole Grateful Dead
yeah theres a price for being free
What a great year it was!!!!
@MayorMichaelShell : Honestly, I have the fainest idea but I seriously doubt that was the reason. I'm almost sure that it was just jerry moving around for sonic reasons with Phil and the drummers... but who knows.
I need 2019 Jerry
oops. Saw them the year before. Third night of "Go To Nassau."
I love the song selection on that release. Great stuff. A friend of mine bought that album from GDP merchandising tent at an Other Ones show. I picked it out for him due to the awesome song selection.
Sure dont know what im goin fo
Jer Bear is the Left Side?
Yes, indeed!!
There's a price for being free
You just know you're in for a good show when they open with Wang Dang Doodle. 😁🤙
Never been a Bob Weir fan.
Lost sailor is flat
To be fair, it was still pretty new.
"lost sailor" 5/13/81 it went perfect in the black and white filming days! sailing is a mystery,u don't know what you will come across, ! my father was a "lost sailor " in the Koren war! excellent song!
