What's really great about 32:9 monitors is, you can watch two movies simultaneously, and mix the audio so that the left ear gets the audio from one, and the right ear gets the audio from the other. It really helps with productivity.

It's REALLY not that hard to find the 4:3 originals still in HD. It's mostly just the streaming services that have deliberately borked everything into being >≈16:9 to reduce the # of very real user complaints from those who don't know any better, which is really kinda sad. 🤷
You have this really cool way of making even the most mundane of subjects seem interesting and engaging. 16:9 was invented specifically to "make it look less like tv" when TV got popular in the 50s. It is an an artificial format that has no basis in science. According to NASA research human vision cone is 5:4, which in theory would be a perfect aspect ratio. The 4:3 is the closest of popular standards we have. Also people who film in portrait mode needs lashes.
4:3 is ideal. I have an old Core 2 Duo laptop and it's really nice to use because it fills so much of your vision in such a perfect way. 16:10 is the closest big manufacturers get... MacBooks are still 16:10 and will likely stay that way.
@@Cobalt985 4:3 makes is so much more easy to make a good video framing. With 16:9 you really have to work to avoid things you don`t want in the shot to show and be distracting...

Took me 6 hours of Googling to figure out why a video I had kept coming out distorted, only to have my mind blown by the knowledge that rectangular pixels were a thing. Aspect ratios are my hell.
There's absolutely times when filming vertically is better. Plus, when viewing on phones or tablets, they fill the entire screen when watching them. But yeah, if the stuff that's in the video is more vertically oriented, why would you films horizontally and have loads of empty space on the left and right, when you could fill the entire screen with what you're trying to film and then when watching them back it'll be zoomed in, instead of zoomed out if it was filmed horizontally. It all depends on what you're filming. Like it's better to film vertically if say you're filming a human dancing, cos then the vertical nature of humans standing up means they can fill the whole frame and you get a more zoomed in view of them, instead of again having wasted empty space on the sides However the absolute worst thing is adding shit to the sides of a vertical video so it has to be viewed horizontally but is just zoomed out because of it. That infuriates me. Cos even in CZcams a vertical video can be viewed full screen on a phone or tablet with no wasted empty space, so why would you add shit to the sides so that that isn't possible anymore? So dumb
@SQ38 You do know that when you shoot a vertical video, the camera sensor will also be vertical since you *rotate* your phone too so there will be no difference between shooting a video vertically and horizontally...
But they could very well refuse to record video if vertically placed, a simple software update would make it happen, with a message "please turn you phone sideways to enable video recording".
Ahem, I may not get populair saying this, but you could just turn your monitor 90 degrees. In any case, don´t get mad at people. This stuff was never properly resolved until the silly-putty-monitor was finally invented in 2033.
I don't care what aspect ratio people use... as long as they don't hardcode letterboxes into the media and the video players are properly aspect ratio agnostic. For instance: I have a 21:9 monitor. When I open Netflix, ALL of their content is 16:9. What did netflix do to movies supplied to them in widescreen formats? They LETTERBOX them to 16:9. So when I watch a movie on netflix, I get to see a 21:9 movie, with black bars on top to make it 16:9, and then again with black bars on the sides because said 16:9 image is smaller than my 21:9 monitor. I.e. in the end MORE THAN HALF OF MY SCREEN IS PITCH BLACK!!!!!!!!!! *insert autistic screeching here* This.... This bullshit here.... This is why we can't have nice things. (I hate Netflix)
Netflix is really bad with this but occasionally you'll stumble on movies that are proper 16:9 or the even rarer 21:9 (or something close to it like 2.39:1) which will make you lose your shit.
Same problem on CZcams with the recent UI design. The video player now adapts to the native aspect ratio of the video, but there are still a shit-ton of videos being uploaded with black bars encoded into the file.

Cap, I love the new animations! I especially liked the full screen graphic to split screen interview shot to full screen transition (eg, 1:20-1:26 in the Frame Rate video). And the plain white bg actually makes it easier to focus on what you're saying/showing. The audio quality is dope, and the upbeat bg music/outtro suits the educational vibe. It looks like you've been busy with a complete design overhaul - I miss seeing your wild editing chops (and the signature sign-off), but overall I'm really digging this new format. Please, keep it up!

1:20 Oh god, this used to wind me up so much seeing improperly setup aspect ratios, and it was especially bad that some Sky TV channels didn't properly flag widescreen broadcasts, not really acceptable since it's not a cheap service! The problem has now mostly gone away now that everything is 16:9, thank goodness!
I really like these explanations better than most of the debunkings. Cap's style and explanations make the debunkings much more fun and informative than if I figured out a more vague solution on my own, but I feel like I learn so much more from these tutorial/explanations in a smaller amount of time.
Since 16:9 arose from the geometric mean between all the other standards at the time, it already kinda is the "optimal middle ground" between all of them.

I really think open matte needs to be the standard for movies and television so they wouldn't have to be panned & scanned or letter boxed/pillarboxed.

I hate how old Simpsons episodes are now "HD" which cuts off the top and bottom of the picture. Everything looks weirdly zoomed in.

The solution is having phones record horizontally when held vertically

If you use the Windows 10 app instead of the browser this apparently fixes the problem.

1:20 Oh god, this used to wind me up so much seeing improperly setup aspect ratios, and it was especially bad that some Sky TV channels didn't properly flag widescreen broadcasts, not really acceptable since it's not a cheap service!
The problem has now mostly gone away now that everything is 16:9, thank goodness!
I really like these explanations better than most of the debunkings. Cap's style and explanations make the debunkings much more fun and informative than if I figured out a more vague solution on my own, but I feel like I learn so much more from these tutorial/explanations in a smaller amount of time.

Since 16:9 arose from the geometric mean between all the other standards at the time, it already kinda is the "optimal middle ground" between all of them.
More like a compromise that no one likes.
It depends on how wide you want to count as "standard," go a bit wider a you get 2:1 as the compromise standard.
