  • Janice asked me if I could provide her with a good, reliable and strong domestic machine. What better choice than a 15-91? In Part 1, we found what was jamming her solid, and in the process of getting her unstuck, we stripped her down to everything except the main shaft. Now, the task is to get her back together so she can spend her next 77 years stitching up a storm...

Well now - would you look at that. The shrew has been tamed! Really, Bob, she's virtually unrecognisable from what you started with. Swish, even. I love this "magic" of dirty parts one moment and gleaming shiny ones all ready to install the next. I wish it worked like that in reality!! This is turning out to be a brilliant little series. I'm glued to the screen for every minute and am not surprised at all you got such interest from the previous episode. It was awesome.

Unlike most of the machines I see, this one was more rust than schmoo. Upon reflection,I'm not really sure which is worse! Glad you liked it!

Wow, good as new. Definitely a beauty! Good to know about the cam screw to the shaft: I had a stuck 201 that the needle bar was high on. After going through your checklist, and trying to find somewhere to isolate the needlebar, I found one of the screws on a block tightened way too much. Problem suddenly solved. Amazing how one tight screw can seize the whole machine!

Sometimes, it is something simple, sometimes... well... it can really be a can of worms...

Things I need to know while working on some of my machines.
Yesterday in Exeter in the UK I was offered three 99k two with reverse and a Singer 28k from 1898 the lady said just take them but I priced them and told her how to sell then from her sewing shop.
One of the 99k machines I think was aluminium, I have asked her by email to test it with a magnet. The serial number was stamped under the bed at the front.

I would love to get my hands on an aluminum 99... Never found one.

More good stuff Mr. Bob. I see part #3 is just out and I'll be moving on to that.
On another note: Could you show a pic of your machine holder (carriage?) I see on your work bench. I need one and a pic could save me a lot of fabrication time. U da Man.

Thanks for sharing this. I am working on that 201 and I am having the worst time getting some of the screws out of the gear under the machine. (not the hook gear. Sorry if you name for things are not textbook.) Tried Kroil. Tried impact. Have tried heat but I figured you would know what else I can try.
    Again, thanks.
