- This is a quick video showing how to make a simple bumper mount using ABS plastic or Kydex. The video explains some of the differences between the materials, and shows how to heat them in order to shape them for your projects.
Follow up: the ABS piece eventually broke right at one of the corner mounting holes. I replaced it with the Kydex piece, which is still going strong!
@Budget RC Im buying a 3D printer and will be using it for rc parts. Do you know if i can i use ABS for gears?
@@tormodhag6824 very unlikely. Prints don't have nearly as much strength as injection molded plastics, plus ABS shrinks, so printing accurately sized parts will be very difficult.
@Budget RC i appreciate smaller channels like yours. viewers can ask questions and get answers, going to sub because of it(content is very good too). Thnks for the answer:)
@@tormodhag6824 thanks!
Just subbed , really like your channel, time 2 go through all your vids now!! Thanks for all your cool vids , be safe ,God Bless!!
Thinking about making a top fuel dragster style car with a aluminum chassis and kydex to make the plastic parts left over from making a Glock holster.
Thank you! Kydex looks like a great option, I'll most likely use it in my custom project. :)
It's great stuff. I have a newer video where I used it to make a battery hold-down on a T3, and soon I'll have a video showing how I used it to fabricate a foam bumper mount.
Keep making vids man u do a good job keep up the good work!
Moderate heat can be used to form bodies too. I had a clearance issue so I bulged or blistered the body over a plug that goes to my ESC. I also bulged and fared the fenders a bit so the tires wouldn't grab the body. Paint and graphics are all 100%, I heated and tested often so I wouldn't over do it.
Thanks very much for your video's and your helpful things you do to help us rc guys, thanks again,
Kind regards
James

Thanks!
Thanks bro that’s a brilliant idea 💡 I’ve been using kydex for rc repairs too, it’s a great way to replace expensive parts . Just make it yourself lol 😎👍
Thx for the info, i have been working on trying to make cheap replacements parts for rc as well. I tried wrapping the part in aluminum foil to create a basic mold. I will try different smelted plastics to fill the mold and test for strength. I tested this with a hot glue gun and it was surprisingly accurate but not strong enough. Im thinking of using a 3d pen to fill the mold with a harder substance that hopefully can be sanded.
Kydex for the win! Just ordered 2 sheets, seen it’s marketed towards making gun custom holsters as well. So works well Rc parts & guns win win
Awesome Tip bro
Whenever I hear Kydex I just think glock holster ;-)
That's how I first heard about it too. ;)
Budget rc do you have those Links or the actual name if I need these sheets. loved the fix. how did it work out for you? subbed and thanks found you by looking for aluminum chassiswhich is what i am after a sheet of orange alloy rc 1:10
fishycomics sorry, I don't. I just did an ebay search for .125 (or 1/8") kydex or ABS sheets. There should be a lot of options available
thanks for the idea man I'll be making bumpers for my rc car's with the abs stuff
use the Kydex. It's way stronger.
Budget RC buttt it's also 3× the price... kinda expensive + I rarely crash so the bumper Is more for look's and little protection
I paid less for a 12x12 sheet than one bumper costs and I'm still usung the same sheet for projects. The ABS is a waste of time.
Budget RC ight I'll just buy the kydex then
I see Kydex T and Kydex V available. Do you know which is the best type to use for applications such as yours in the video?
Roger Grant, I don't remember which type this is. I would try the Google-fu to see what the differences are
Nice video bro. Which material would you recommend overall, and what is your cutting tool of choice?
Rich Duperbash I would recommend the Kydex. So far it's been more durable than the ABS.
SPringSteel banding straps free atyour local lumber yard and come in various widths
Thank you I needed this video any recommendations for making a cover to cover the battery and esc to put under my shell for when it flips its all in the cover
Kydex should work great for that.
i like this vid i have a RC car too mines Ford shelby mustang GT500 scale (1:14) can be
this be upgraded too with parts?
SonGoku yessir! What are you looking to "upgrade"on it?
Kydex is used to make molded gun holsters.
Yup. That's how I knew about it.
Spring STeel banding straps bro.......Spring steel banding straps.
What thickness of kydex?
3mm or 1/8”
how did u cut them sheets?
I use a dremmel with a cut off disk.
hi , can i have the ebay link please? , i didn’t find it
That was so long ago that I'm sure it's gone. Just search for "kydex sheet" and you'll find a ton.
Hi
I use HDPE and it's fine! Not the best, but I can get thick sheets of it for free!
This part MUST be springy
It was pretty rigid. When kydex is cool, it's a lot more rigid than ABS.
@BudgetRC_Channel it SHOULD be springy otherwise it will not actually BUMP. If you crash, instead it will just break....
I don't crash, but I know.
@TheSphongleface it's got enough compliance to not break, but it's not as flimsy as ABS
Good vidéo, me too i make a homemade bumper for my ecx amp, check it out
You need a 3D printer.
I have one. Check out my 10428 series. 3d printed parts don't have the strength to work in applications like this.
Just buy an affordable 3d printer
I have one, but printed parts are not nearly as strong as kydex parts.
@@BudgetRC_Channel ya but you can be way more flexible with the parts you want to make
@@fxbcamel6421 yeah. I have a whole series I did of 3d printed upgrades to a WL Toys truck. 3d printed parts are fantastic in the right situation, but something like a bumper mount that needs to be super durable isn't that situation.
