@@mwdollar thanks for the link, brother. Super cool. edit: imagine the potential flat picker that might arise from that group of kiddos whom Billy blessed with not just a guitar, but his confidence in them to make something more of themselves if only given the opportunity.
Billy I hope you hang on to that wonderful down-home spirit. You are beyond crazy when it comes to pickin, but your easy-going nature is what sets you apart!
Not all vintage Martin Guitars are the same- there’s usually a Gem that just has it all going on. That 44’ is one of them. Same goes with Loar’ F-5 Mandolins. Ive seen this occur with 1960’s Martins or any Vintage Factory Instrument. I could tell -with just my cell I -phone speakers as soon as Billy started picking that Gem. I’d love to sit in room and compare that 44’ D-28 to the Brazillian’ D-28 style I crafted in 1991’.
Hi Billy! WOW your new holy grail D-28 sounds so full, both lows and highs. Love the sustain too. Hope to see you play her on stage soon. Love and blessings from Michigan.
Years ago I bought my Martin custom at Gruhn. Nice people! Keep up the good work Billy. Burlington Bill here of the songs 66 Mustang and Sailing to Freedom Featured on the site Sailing into Freedom.
Martin had to let most of their luthiers go during the war years, due to sales going way down, but they kept their most talented luthiers, resulting in some of their best guitars ever, like this one!
My family has a 44 Martin D-28 and 1950 which belonged to my Grandfather who was a tobacconist / seller of cigars . His guitars , mandolins and other musical instruments are still kept in his humidity and temp controlled tobacco room to this day. Thanks for this video and all the best.
The fact that this guitar has a punch to every fret, on every string, that I can't even begin to explain is I N S A N E lol I know this is billy playing, but this guitar is like the perfect mix of what you need for a rhythm AND a lead guitar. Most companies will say that their guitars are good for both, but it never truly is. There's always that one little "ting" that doesn't hit right (in my ear personally) but THIS guitar is tge perfect level of a mixture in my opinion. I'm thankful to God this is in Billy's hands, and I hope he cherishes this guitar and that we all see more of it! Bless you all, and have a wonderful night! 🙌
@mike d It's just like the Stradivarius violins. Everyone thinks they're the best violins ever made, but when put up against modern instruments, everyone from professional musicians to casual fans prefer the modern instrument's tone... For some reason, people think older is better when it comes to musical instruments, but that's just not true. New is king...and more affordable...
I gave a thumbs up for your talent, and generosity. I don't get misty eyed over old guitars, and don't like the sound of Martins, but I appreciate many do..
That is some flatpickin, and that is a guitar to do it on! I still love D18's though. ANY era. They don't call em 'Banjo killer' for no particular reason!
