  • In this video we fly the OXY 5 MEG that was shutting down the motor. I oiled the tail belt with 3 and 1 silicone oil. I flew four flights back to back and no motor shut down! So it was a static issue. I will ground the boom to solve it permanently.

    Woaww never though about static ! Didn't even know it could shutdown the motor !

      Static isn’t as much of an issue anymore as it used to be because our electronics are a lot better and they can take a static discharge created from the belt. some models create a lot more static than other models.

    Never heard of silicone spray on belts. Thought they were supposed to be good just the way they are
    Glad it fixed the issue. Keep on keeping on 🚁🚁
    I am curious on how you check your pitch, have never seen you do it in your build videos. Thanks and have a great day

    I don’t know why people REFUSE to believe in static discharge, most problems are exactly like this in all forums, when I mention static I’m always told how stupid I am. Problem is I’ve have a static problem on some helis and fixed them with a simple wire. I just don’t mention it anymore because they all know better but MINE are problem free

      Ever had a problem on carbon booms or just aluminum?

    • @westhobbiesrc8051

      Static is definitely still a problem to this day on certain helicopters. A lot of people don’t believe in static issues, but it can still happen even though our electronics are even better and they can take more of a static discharge, but certain models create a lot more static then others.

      @@OregonMotorcycle the problem is not the boom, it’s how the boom is connected to the frame plastic is not conducive so a electrical charge is created in the boom till a lightning bolt finally jumps to the frame, electronics don’t like lightning

      This is really interesting as I’ve recently switched to vbar and have been having issues with comms glitches, packet losses, motor shutdowns. I’ve been in contact with mikado and other than antenna placement/support/protection, I’ve hear about conductivity and static. What’s odd is that I only see these issues at one flying spot, but none of the other pilots w the same models and also on vbar have it. Range checks are good antenna placement is good, so my question is what causes static on one, let’s say the specter 700, vs another that doesn’t have static or glitches? Is it as simple as the tail belt is too tight?
      Next question is if you go the silicone route how often does it need to be applied?

    I can remember guys back in the day running ground straps to the boom and soaking the belt in WD for a bit.

      I remember that as well. The original SAB Helicopters used to include a static kit. I have them on my Mini comet and fireball. Simple ground wire is all that’s needed.

    This has happened in 2 different Heli's now. Is this some new sort of Phenomenon, or something that has been a problem for years? Again, thanks for all the great info Jeff.

      @westhobbiesrc8051  Před 4 měsíci

      Static has been a problem for as long as I can remember. Years ago it was a lot more of a problem than it is now because the electronics we have now handle it better but certain models especially ones that have plastic boom block, casings, or carbon fiber, tail sides, create a lot more static, and it can’t discharge static like a model that has a metal to metal connection from the boom to the mount to the main plate. Like SAB.

    also read that a ground wire is good insurance for static if for whatever reason the lube wears off.

      @westhobbiesrc8051  Před 4 měsíci

      Yes! A ground wire is the best way to solve it. Going to do that on this one.

    Been flying this ESC on a 700 dom with great results... being also that is a TT heli. One thing i wonder about is that if a ferrite ring could help with static. My HW esc does not have this but others for example YGE include them and recommend their use.

    • @westhobbiesrc8051
      @westhobbiesrc8051  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I’ve got a few Hobbywing 130s. This is the only Heli with this ESC that’s been an issue. Mainly because the Tail Boom is mounted to a plastic mount with no grounding whatsoever. I’m not sure if that would help or not? It could! Call Ron a simple ground wire to permanently solve the issue.

    Can you please share what oil you used seen there is multiple 3 and 1 oils . Would like to spray my kraken 580 belt since was haveing same issue awhile back..

    • @westhobbiesrc8051
      @westhobbiesrc8051  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I’ll just use the simple three in one silicone oil it comes in a bottle. I bought it at Walmart I believe. I would definitely recommend soaking your belt anyways as I normally do all my helicopters every 50 to 100 flights I take a Q-tip and rub the silicone oil on the belt.

  • @steunsoul
    @steunsoul Před 4 měsíci +1

    Great you found out what caused the problem.
    Now my question is, how does silicon oil on the belt solve static issues?

    • @blue_phoenix2778
      @blue_phoenix2778 Před 4 měsíci +3

      friction makes static.so take friction out, no more static

    • @westhobbiesrc8051
      @westhobbiesrc8051  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Silicone oil, eliminates the friction, created by the belt which causes the static issue. A grounding wire also does the same for a permanent solution

    • @steunsoul
      @steunsoul Před 4 měsíci

      Yep, on my Logo 550SE there’s a grounding wire connecting the tail rotor output shaft to the motormount.
      I have a100ml bottle of treadmill silicon oil to maintain the belt.
      I just studied this matter. Silicon oil is a very good electric insulator, also used in fibers for clothing to reduce statics.
      I never knew....

    Wow good to you maybe found the problem. I have the same issue with my kraken 580 with Hw 150 xnova motor on 6S. Putt 147amps 2000 rpm with 23pinion.. now i live in europe butt where can i buy this 3in1 silicone oil..can it also with WD40 spray or any silicone oil (3 in 1 multi purpose oil or 3 in 1 silcone spray i can buy) and how to groudwire the tail on a kraken carbon tailboom?

    • @westhobbiesrc8051
      @westhobbiesrc8051  Před 4 měsíci

      This could very well solve your issue on your kraken.I know the original goblins used to have problems with static, and they would include a kit. Do you want to use a silicone based oil to prolong the life of your belt. Any silicone oil will work I just happen to use three and one silicone oil. There’s a couple different ways you can do it. The easiest way is to just take a single 22 gauge wire and solder an Eye hoop on each end. Go to a screw on the tail casing itself and then you can either run it to the boom, or all the way up to the main place somewhere. I believe mikado still sells an antistatic kit. But I know SAB does for sure.

      well known issue, i had a MSH Protos many years ago. these were plagued with this issues.they broought out a anti static upgrade kit for it.many owners just ran a ground wire from tail to frame

    • @westhobbiesrc8051
      @westhobbiesrc8051  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Yes sir! Static created by the belt, causing the ESC to freak out or motor shut down. It used to be a very big problem mini years ago but our new electronics have gotten so much better but still some models. Have an issue with it.
