    We got our SL 900 blackwood installed a couple of weeks ago. It is beautiful and with the stone it really is comfortable. Just a warm glow. I struggle a bit keeping the window absolutely clean when lighting or trying to do overnight. Shut down to 25% znd the flames go out so maybe the draw, but I am willing (perhaps eager) to tzke the blame 😊 it is so nice and just unlike other wold stoves. Anyway thanks again for the review.

      Excellent!
      These definitely sound like niggles whilst you learn the appliance. The key for long burns is a very hot fire with lots of charcoals built up, you can then load it, wait for everything to be flaming and then close it down (but perhaps slightly less than you are currently). In terms of keeping the glass keen whilst lighting, this is generally a fire that is too small. Try more fuel and kindling and leave the door ajar until you have a big fire.

      @@TheTortoise Thanks for the tips, I'll definitely give them a try. I don't doubt I have too small a fire. The instructions say "don't load over this line" and it seems so low. It gives me an idea for a video. First you get a guy like me to light a fire and do an overnight burn and fog it all up, then in the same stove you show it done right 😎

    I thought a couple of companies, until I saw your Video of the Heta Skan Line 900. "Oh my Goodness" 🤣😅
    You are absolutely right.
    I saw this Oven at a dealer's store and bought it straight away.
    Thank you very much for your content.

    Hi Gabriel, just a quick message to say how much we appreciate and value all of your reviews which are really helping us narrow down our short-list!
    And a question please....I may have missed it but can't find a review of the HETA Scan-Line 7L. Do you have any plans to review this one please? Many thanks.

      Thanks Gabriel, We're building a really well insulated house and so we calculate the 7L rated at 4kw will be spot-on. It's really a choice between that and the Ambition which is very well rated by you and others. Thank you for your reviews and advice which are so helpful.Please keep up the good work!@@TheTortoise

    Thank you for your reviews, it really helped us narrow our choice. We looked at the 900, but it is big. We need a 6kW stove using your calculations and our local dealer (and honestly the SL8 would be fine, because we have radiators too, but the logs from the old fireplace just won't fit) the SL 800 is a great size, and they all have that great ash can, but the air control on the back is just bizarre. This 900 is just so nice. And i am thinking, stone/dirt walls, we'll open a window 😉. Are we out of our minds?

    Hi Gabriel, great review. You have helped me narrow down to a short list between the Heta Scan-line 8 or this model. The living room is 5.8 mtrs x 3.5 x 2.4 , with a conservatory on the side 3.4 * 3.4 * 2.5. Want to warm the 4 bed house which is around 26 years old with rads, the 8 might be ok. Need to make a choice between the two, I would like to get your input.

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Well the first thing to say is you will drive heat around a home by keeping a stove running for longer periods. Both are capable of running seriously, so they’re both valid, but I have to admit if I had the money I’d have the 900. That thing is a beast, and the added size and power will increase the speed of heating. Potentially you could also consider the Scanline 800, which may be the happy medium in terms of power.

    • @GarryPettit
      @GarryPettit Před 9 měsíci

      Appreciate your comments, really helpful. Review of the 8 and 900 were great, I presume you need an air vent with the 900? Also is there a great difference in the heat output when you tested both stoves, did you notice a big difference with the 900 over the 8? Out local dealer is good but does not have any of these on display. Thought I would get your feedback, you know your stuff.

    • @GarryPettit
      @GarryPettit Před 9 měsíci

      The room where it will be placed is approximately 45 m^2. Wife and I want to make the right choice, she’s likes the look of the 8 and 900, she’s not keen on the 800.

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Yes the 900 definitely has a considerably bigger output and will unfortunately need an air vent too. Luckily the vent isn’t too big with this stove.

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  Před 9 měsíci

      @@GarryPettityea I’m probably leaning towards the 900, as it’s added power and flexibility has some very attractive advantages even in spite of their vent.

    Hi again. I don't see any reviews that you have done on Jotul stoves, but perhaps I have missed them? We have an option to purchase a Jotul F373 V2 advance delivered before November, ready for CHRISTMAS!! Wowee! The HETA would be well into next year. My wife prefers the look of the Jotul and I prefer the functionality of the Heta, also the power, which is max 10 with the Jotul and max 13 with the Heta. Price is the same. All components of the Jotul are cast iron I believe. The Heta is steel and cast combi, but perhaps this doesn't make much difference. Just wondered what your thoughts are on Jotul F370 series. It won the "Red Dot" design award for an earlier version a couple of years ago. ATB. Neil

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  Před 2 lety +1

      I used to deal with Jotul a lot, but when the Norwegian Standard changed the way their stoves controlled problems and complaints increased.
      Not having tested that stove or any Jotul for many years I’m sure I’m out of date, but my expectation was always that the lack of control on modern Jotuls spoilt the brand.
      I’d love to test one, because I honestly don’t know if it is still an issue, but the Heta’s control is basically unbeatable anyway.
      I am aware that their timescales have gone silly though.
      I will get to one, but I haven’t got one imminent at the moment.
      Sorry I couldn’t of been more useful.

    Enjoyed this video and the one you have of the Scanline 8. What do you think of this compared to a HETA Scanline 8 or maybe a Contura 510 style ?

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  Před 2 lety

      Hi Christian,
      It’s worth mentioning that this stove is quite a powerful beast, so room size would definitely influence me. I have fitted a 510, but I haven’t used it extensively. All 3 are obviously lovely top of the range options, I do like the ash pan set up of those Heta stoves, but the ease of lighting with the 900 and the Contura is also quite convenient.
      The 900 is clearly the best of the best, but it is also the most expensive.
      Let me know the following and I’ll let you know what I’d pick:
      Room size?
      Building rough age?
      Intended use (back up and focal point, or serious use)?
      Primary fuel, wood based or coal based?
      Installation: chimney, internal flue system or external flue system?
      Gabriel

      @@TheTortoise Hi Gabriel,
      Thanks for getting back to me.
      Is the ease of lighting for the Contura and the 900 very different from the Scanline 8 ?
      Do you have any insights into how the Contura vs the Heta is in terms of build quality and how durable they are.
      I think the 900 series will be too big a stove, but I'm not sure.
      The room where it will be placed is approximately 21-25 m^2 with a lot of windows and somewhat high ceiling. It will be the primary source of heat in that room on colder days, but there are radiators installed that cannot keep up during colder days. The room is en suite/connected to another bigger room that is well heated by radiators but that will of course also benefit from more heat coming from the room with the stove once installed :)
      The house is from 1989 but the room where it is to be placed is from 1997 (including the windows).
      We will be using wood as fuel.
      We will get a new flue installed that will go directly up through the roof.
      Best regards,
      Christian

      @@christianoppermann1784
      Thanks for all that.
      I think that I would look at the Heta Scan-Line 800. It’s in between the other Heta’s in terms of output and better suited to your room requirements. It’s also Heta’s direct competitor to the Contura 510.
      Both are well made and durable, and similar in terms of lighting too. The Heta Ash-pan design is present on the 800 too.
      Obviously I’ve never tested these side by side, but I would expect the Heta to have better controllability, fuel economy and a longer burn time, but the Contura will be less money and still fantastic top of the range option.
      The Scan-line 8 will need to be worked hard when it is a sole source of heat in that room, but given the type of installation I do not think lighting will be an issue. The 900 as you’ve said is over powering for the room, but the Contura and Scan-line 800 are ideal.
      Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Hi Gabriel, superb review, thank you. Have you reviewed the Scanline 900 with side windows? Or have you seen the Scanline 900 with side windows in operation?
    I wonder therefore if you could comment on....
    1. Whether the side windows remain free from soot during normal operating temperatures...and
    2. Your own opinion on the overall shape and look of the 900 with, and the 900 without side windows - the one with windows looks a little "angular" or "box-like" whereas the one without is curved and well-rounded. I appreciate this is down to personal taste, but I'd be pleased to have your opinion on the aesthetics of the two.
    Presumably the functionality is the same. The controllability is extraordinary, as you have clearly demonstrated in your excellent video. ATB. Neil

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  Před 2 lety +1

      I have definitely seen it and used it with side windows. It is very possible to keep it clean, but wiping dust off them is also pretty normal. It is a very personal choice and the trouble with me is I have been surrounded by stoves my entire life, I literally can’t be objective anymore. I am interested in the technical brilliance of a design, but the look is lost to me. They both are obviously very striking centre pieces to a room, but I would pick simply based on where it was going. I wouldn’t have side windows in a corner for example, but if it was totally freestanding and very visible on both sides I’d either want side windows or the turntable that enables the stove to spin (but only if I could stomach the cost increases). Both these options add interest and excitement, which could be important, a bit like having an open top on a sports car?
      I think you’re looking at a spectacular stove though!

    • @hikerdoc6771
      @hikerdoc6771 Před 2 lety

      Thank you for the very valid points you make. Yes, the stove is to be placed completely free-standing in the middle of a 6.5m external wall, flanked on both sides by large and very tall double french doors. The ceiling is 4.25m and so the stove will not only be a major feature of the room, it will also have it's work cut out to heat it. The width of the room is 5m and so the overall volume is 130 cu m. We have a small through-"town house" in an old hospital building over 3 floors, so once the room is warm, the door through to the hallway will be opened to allow heat to rise over the 3 levels. The Heta 900 has, I think, the right output for the intended use. The side windows would add to the appearance without being problematical (taking into consideration what you say about the airwash keeping them clean).
      We are also thinking about the Contura stoves, but not so sure they are powerful enough for our room/house and also not so sure about the "automatic flame regulator system". Your demonstration of the controllability of the Heta makes me wonder about why an "auto" mechanism is a selling point on the Contura. Seems a little gimmicky to me, but I wonder if you have any thoughts on the Contura stoves overall, particularly the "auto control" and whether there is a model that is as powerful as the Heta 900. The Contura look good and are a little cheaper I think.

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  Před 2 lety +1

      @@hikerdoc6771 given your serious use, I absolutely would not want any automatic controls. Control is best in your hands and the Heta will have more control than the Contura. Having said that the Contura is a lovely piece of kit, but given the functional use required I think it is just not the right beast in this instance.
