    I’ve heard someone describe Let Down as all of the instruments crying into a beautiful serenade of music. That’s the best description of it I’ve ever heard

      Referring to it as "prom music" felt like a bizarre comment since for me it's a track that feels so isolated, a harmonic presentation of the precise sorrow that lingers not when a lot has gone wrong but instead when so little is going right. I couldn't imagine something that burns in this emotional way appealing to me on a night designed for fun.

    • @DougAraujo
      @DougAraujo  Před 3 měsíci +1

      That’s true, I think I meant more sonically than lyrically you know? Somebody who’s never heard the song before and doesn’t know the weight of the lyrics might just find it easy to slow dance to hahaha

      @@DougAraujo that's fair. I enjoyed your commentary on the album overall, so I'm not throwing heavy criticism at you. I just found that particular comment at odds with my own view. In terms of initial reaction to the instrumental aspects, with it's gradual, delicate approach I can actually see where you were coming from. I have to bare in mind myself that on my first listen I wasn't moved much by Let Down. Today it might be my favourite ever song.

    While In rainbows is great you need to do Kid A next - to follow This up With such a creative departure is not
    Only important context to their impact on pop culture … it’s also helps understand the band themselves and their pursuit of art and growth over everything else. okc and IR are my favs but Kid A is the one I respect the most for its integrity , artistic statement and bravery.

    There's a great documentary on the tour of this album called MEETING PEOPLE IS EASY. Totally worth watching.
    "Exit Music For A Film" was based on the plot of Romeo & Juliet because Baz Lurhman asked them to write a song for his 1996 film version of it (hence "For A Film"). Thom Yorke was always upset by the story because he never understood why Romeo & Juliet didn't just run away together so the lyrics reflect that sensibility which is why the final lyrics have such bitterness to it.

    Hey. Glad you enjoyed this-it's one of my favorites all-time. Radiohead is one of my favorite bands, and they are the soundtrack to my life. In 2017, they released a 20yr reissue with a second disc of previously unreleased tracks that weren't included in the original, but are worth a listen. Man of war is one of the tracks that I really enjoy.

    Just caught your channel because I'm a massive Radiohead fan. Not gonna lie, this is the way everyone should do music reviews. You have you, your chat and the lyrics all clearly displayed for everyone to follow along with. Excellent job. Sub Alien is my personal favorite track on the album. But Climbing Up The Walls is a perfect description of depression and The Tourist, to me, is the most perfect description of what its like as an autistic person to try and navigate the world. So many reasons I love the band and this album. Thanks for the review and keep up the good work.

    They get “trippy” in later albums…It has its trippy moments but they embrace that even more down the road. Your only getting started. Very blown out drums… I think (Ministry/ Skinny Puppy?) preceded that blown out sound. I’m sure that others used it…the Beatles even, but you hear it very well on Flaming Lips ‘The Soft Bulletin’, which you should also visit.
    They can pull all of it off live; the production, arrangements and execution is just unrivaled. The sonics man, the sonics! Each album is its own universe. Always melancholic, but you feel like you’ve had a good cry or catharsis so I’m always strangely uplifted….and aliens, lots of alien references. That and car crashes. They 8 times out of 10 subvert what you expect next.
    Queen is a green touchstone. The kind of record you remember where you were when you first heard it. Do Kid A if you want to get weird, Hail to the Thief if you want to rock, Amnesiac..when you don’t feel good and you don’t know why, In Rainbows for some beautiful version of neo-soul, King of Limbs for total groove pushing boundaries, Moon Shaped Pool -remembrance, The Bends for teenage bliss; Then bust out THE Smile for total prog with a kraut touch. A complete well balanced diet.

    Mad props that you can analyze the instruments, time signatures, production values, etc, and still focus on the feeling presented by the music in each song, all on a first listen! On future listens you'll see how much the lyrics and themes are in synch to the sound and emotion of the music. Great review!

    It always amazed me that No Surprises was such a hit while being one of the top darkest Radiohead songs. I'm glad more people don't 'get it' because it (...) sucks. When a person -accepts- their final decision they can get a profound feeling of relief, calmness...peace? It's literally all right there.... no alarms (not waking up) and no surprises (no more trauma) please. I find a lot of people are misdirected by the such a pretty house/garden part. Its more of a take on how people will say "oh but look how beautiful everything is! how can you be sad when they house is pretty?! and the yard, you must be so lucky" ....yes. They can see it. Doesn't fix things. Sorry for being so down with this comment....I realy did enjoy your reaction. Great job!

      Not quite right. Exit Music was indeed used in the film - as the title suggests, it plays over the end credits. However, Radiohead decided they liked it so much they wanted to save it for their next album, which is why it didn't feature on the R+J soundtrack. That said, Radiohead also had another song, "Talk Show Host", which you hear during the film, and that one is on the soundtrack.

    climbing up the walls is my favorite track on the album
    also believe it or not, most people who listen to radiohead don't really like electioneering much. i kind of understand in the context of the album since it's sandwiched between two songs that are very different to it feeling-wise (fitter happier and climbing up the walls). as a standalone song though, i like it a lot. probably would've worked out better towards the beginning of the album

    Let Down is constantly voted by Radiohead fans as one of their favorite songs. When you listen to this record a few times, it will unlock. It's not as straight forward as you think. One guitar is in 4/4 and the other is in 5/4. It creates these complex harmonies throughout the song that you probably don't notice the first couple of times through. Then one day, it hits you and suddenly it's your favorite song on the album. It also presents some of the core themes of the record, the alienation, the dissociation with the modern world... "One day I am gonna grow wings from a chemical reaction, hysterical and useless."

      LOL yeah, he was not paying much attention to the lyrics during Let Down, and I don't blame him he was probably lost in all those beautiful sounds.

    This album is a very dark and empty melodic take on the early 2000s and the way the future was (and is) heading. Blew me away in my late teens, doing a computer science degree.

    I can’t interpret Exit Music as being about anything else but two people taking their own lives, likely by inhalation of car exhaust fumes (“Keep breathing, don’t lose your nerve, I can’t do this alone…and now we are One, in everlasting peace.”) The title and lyrics seem pretty unambiguous to me. No Surprises seems like another final goodbye song, “My final fit, my final bellyache”, literally via “A handshake of Carbon Monoxide.”
    Incredibly sad songs.

    hi, not an AI comment bot. me as a 16 year old in 1997: "ok, this thing needs processing". you in 2024, content creator: immediately having pre-programmed opinions about sounds and guitars about an album "you've never heard before making the video". enjoy your AI bot replies.

      @DougAraujo  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Hi! Idk if this is the first video of mine you’ve ever watched, but I’ve never lied about a first reaction. It defeats the entire purpose of the format. I’ve done videos where I replay albums I’ve heard before and NONE of them have “first reaction” in the title. My opinions aren’t preprogrammed at all, I’ve just been making music reactions for 6 years and have gotten good at picking up on production elements I enjoy and commenting on them. You’ll notice many of my comments on the lyrics are actually pretty superficial because I’m not great at picking up on lyrical themes and motifs on my first listen, I usually catch the subtext with further listens. My ear is much better for production. I’ve been making music since 2016 and although I’m no pro, my ears are good at picking up subtle details in the instrumentals on the fly, because I’ve practiced this. Believe me or don’t, but it’s the truth. I appreciate the comment and thanks for watching!
