    AI was a huge issue in the strike, but both SAG-AFTRA and WGA completely caved on AI. I've read the new contract and there are huge loopholes that allow producers to use AI to replace people. The only concession the unions earned was to pay people to use their digital image, which is something the studios were going to do anyway.

    I love Bryan Cranston's work but I agree with Liz on how cringy his speech was. People worried about synthesizers, auto tune and CGI but good story telling and writing will be what keeps people watching quality shows or movies not AI or how something is produced. • @skeleton_craftGaming
      @skeleton_craftGaming Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@johnwesley256 I mean there's already laws that say you can own ideas [That is what IP law (with the exclusion of copyright, which requires there to be work done before it is invoked) is]. I was talking more philosophically. Two people could come up with the same idea independently. Therefore there is no limit to the supply of the resource that is intellect, therefore, you cannot have [in a free open market] conflict over ideas. Therefore, in so much as that ownership is to resolve conflict of use, you cannot own any ideas because there is not the conflict that is required for you to claim ownership over something. And due to that fact all of these intellectual property laws (Again save copyright) actually artificially create conflict by limiting who can and cannot think things, and therefore in my opinion, at least are unethical and their costs significantly outweigh their benefits.

      @@skeleton_craftGamingyou’re referring to patent law. Typically, patents only run for a few years. There’s a very short period of artificially created conflicts.
      You’re also forgetting trademarks, which require action. They are created by operating under a brand name or logo. In fact, inaction after securing them can result in a forfeiture of the trademark.

    • @johnwesley256
      @johnwesley256 Před 2 měsíci

      @@skeleton_craftGaming Completely agree 💯. A certain company long ago was able to change the public domain laws for their benefit though they had made most of their money off of public domain stories. The problem is that free and open market has been being attacked for years and our politicians have been making a fortune in the stock market. Currently many states are rolling back child labor laws. All the fighting unions did to make it so we had a middle class has been lost through disinformation and corporation influence on education. Anti-trust and Monopoly laws have been being repealed. In the last 2 decades we've seen many strikes. Though inflation has gone up considerably, tax brackets have stayed almost the same. Our Social security system pays the rich triple of what other countries pay (they don't even need it IMO, as it was set up to allow people to not work after a certain age).
      Your argument is perfectly sound, but the leeches will do what they do best. We vote them into the office then they sell us out, all the while they extort us and diminish our rights. Both parties!

    Liz has something of a point there. It will still take human creativity to make really great art, music, or whatever. And while the democratization of AI tools will allow talentless people to make lots mediocre works, it will also help us discover more creative people who are in disadvantaged situations.
    As for the data, I already have serious reservations about copyrights, but I question if we truly own our personal data, or if we do, just how would we able to enforce property rights in personal data. Do I have the right to tell someone how they can use a photo of me? The same thing about an AI clone of me. Maybe how that data is obtained makes a difference; maybe it doesn't. If any kind of enforcement is possible, it will probably be technological, not legal.

  • @homewall744

    If you worry about copyright, then you are not able to produce value anymore and demand to live off the past. Of course an AI can "watch" or "hear" anything that's available to be viewed or heard. I mean, should we have removed special effects or stunt people because they are "fake"?

    Of the four prime directives necessary for basic civilization, freedom (absence of coercion and deceit), property (whatever you acquire without coercion or deceit), contracts, (the legal mechanism for exchanging property through rights and obligations), and equitable compensation for proven damages, property is the most problematic.
    For civilization to exist, there needs to be a recognition that these directives are necessary either through collective willingness to respect the directives or enforcement by something, institutions, governments, whatever. A healthy republic that incorporates the people through juries that decide if they want to support the use of force against any particular individual tends to render the most stable and fair results, the greatest good for the greatest number.
    I'm not uneducated (I like the idea of AI and have no sympathy whatsoever for either Hollywood or workers raking in hundreds of thousands who consider it their eternal right instead of a gift conferred by sheer luck of birth), but in conflicts like these I gladly surrender the decision to a jury. Of course, that's why juries aren't popular with special interests, it's a lot harder to guarantee the use of force for my pet fetish.
