SA Director of Rugby, Rassie Erasmus, does not mince his words, a trait that could earn him the wrath of the sport’s governing body, World Rugby. Did he overstep the mark in his now infamous video, leaked online after the Boks’ defeat in the first test against the British and Irish Lions earlier this year? Or did he shine a light on an organisation lacking accountability and in need of reform? Questions Carte Blanche attempts to answer as Erasmus finally faces up to allegations of misconduct and violating the sport’s code of conduct.

There is no way that a professional referee should be making over 20 mistakes in one test match. Can you imagine a surgeon making that many mistakes in an operating theatre?

If you're paid a wage or receive an income for doing a job then you should be held accountable for holding that position and for your actions just like anyone else who goes to work and makes a mistake. The players who don't perform are dropped, the coaches who don't perform are dropped, the trainer's and staff who don't perform are dropped. But when a refere or sideline touch judge doesn't perform they just go straight into the next game no questions asked. I think it's time for world rugby to start asking the question.

Rassie was right to air his grievances, Berry is not a good referee, he constantly has to call his assistants to discuss the situations, and it's time for TMO's to do their job of reviewing the incident, and not to tell the ref what to do!! I back Rassie to the hilt 👍

A long time ago I suggested a demerit system for referees that made controversial decisions on the field. A sanction of six games as an official, at any level of the game should suffice. It would go a long way to stopping incidents that the rugby world finds itself in at the moment. Are there any leaders out there who can start such a movement ... or do we watch the status quo ruin the great name of rugby.

Well my opinion is that referees and match officials should be held accountable for making bad decisions because they are paid well and selected to officiate because they are believed to be good but if the standard they delivered isn't than they should be questioned because one bad decision could result in a team losing. They need to be criticised so they can get a grip.

Rassie’s post match video was only made BECAUSE the match officials (ref, asst. ref.s and tmr.) are not being evaluated nor penalised by a NEUTRAL body.
The ONLY way to maintain any uniformity within a field of interest (excuse the pun), (be it accounting, science and engineering, etc.) is through auditing.
Why are referee officials not evaluated/audited after every game - and there scores publicised ?

A microcosm of all of this is the Scrum! The Scrum is the most iconic and legendary part of Rugby Union Football. For years the scrum contests have not been a fair contest, if World Rugby can't get the scrum right by the laws of the game, then all of Rugby Union fairness is lost.

Rugby at grass roots level has a team of 3 but at test level there’s a team of 4 plus umpteen cameras!
Yes referees have bad games, like players do too, but to level the cheat and dishonesty at a referee goes beyond what is acceptable in the Code of Conduct anyone connected to rugby signs up to. I have read the report of the independent hearing and was not surprised with the findings. Quite honestly RE would have received more respect worldwide had he stated he felt the whole of WR was inept, outdated and needed to come into the 21st century to recognise that match officials are not untouchable

let alone the further prejudice against South Africans or protection of Australians, Craig Joubert got ONE decision wrong in Australia vs Scotland World Cup semi's. World Rugby throw him to the wolves and publicly condemn him and publicly state he was wrong. forget about backing him up saying he followed protocol by leaving the field to avoid public scene with players. no, just that he was wrong.
Nic Berry, gets 23 decisions wrong, and world rugby take months to eventually let it slip that Rassie was right, only because his video was leaked, and don't overtly state this, instead they protect Berry and go after Rassie.
World Rugby's double standards or inconsistent standards are as bad as their current crop of referrees are.

I actually can’t believe that in this day and age where just about anything can be said, you are not allowed to point out the mistakes of a referee, that could affect so many dreams/careers. Not sure why the IRB is so upset about this, is it because once again they are fielding refs that are just not up to standard? This is tier-one elite rugby, played by the best of the best individuals. The ref is simply cheating the players (both teams really). The question is; do we have a cancel culture looming within this old boys club? 2011 saw similar transgressions from a ref, that cost the Springbok against Australia (from memory). and cast a shadow on world rugby at the time. Where a ref has control of a game, the only thing you expect from them is consistent fairness. If there is no ability for the ref to be fair, then they should be exposed and then purged from internationals. #irb

Rassie ought to have gone through official protocols instead of a public announcement. Yes, was justified to have his grievances for sure. Seeing is believing. However, in his position, he must have known the defining lines that he, as Director of Bok rugby, shoiuld not cross. No doubt he will be found to have done wrong, little doubt also that he and who ever else it entails will like-wise face penalties...Perhaps lessons may be learned from this so that matters like this do not re-occur..." Water, anyone?".
