In Out of Context Pt 5: Do Not Judge, Walking The Text Content Director Brad Nelson unpacks what is widely considered to be the most misused verse in the entire Bible: “Do not judge or you too will be judged.” These famous words are quoted by Christians and non-Christians alike, often as a shield to prevent others from speaking into our lives in any way that feels critical or disapproving.
But is that really what Jesus meant? As we’ll discover, Jesus also routinely said things like, “If your brother sins, rebuke him.” How exactly are we supposed to confront our brother’s sin without judging? Well, it depends on what Jesus meant by the word “judge.” In Greek, “to judge” meant “to make a decision, to exercise judgment, or to condemn.” It’s pretty hard to imagine Jesus telling people, “Do not exercise sound judgement!” Instead, Jesus is saying, “Do not condemn or you too will be condemned.”
In this passage, Jesus shines a spotlight on our hypocritical tendency to mix ignorance of ourselves with arrogance toward others, and he does it by employing one of the funniest, most memorable illustrations in the Bible. By the end of Out of Context Pt 5: Do Not Judge, you’ll have a new appreciation for how confronting our own hypocrisy and condemnation actually empowers us to speak more effectively into one another’s lives!

I hear what you're saying and agree. Could you explain the rest of the verse in relation to the first sentence? What does it look like when God judges the Christian who judges others? What are the consequences we will face when we judge others? It seems to he saying, the more we judge others, the more the Lord will judge us. As Christians, our salvation is not lost. So, what are the consequences we face from God?
