It's important to understand about "sustained load cracking" with the old 6351 alloy. Especially with these old luxfer alloy tanks.

Just started "hoarding" some tanks so thank you for the useful tips regarding inspection.

We have a local Hydro testing facility in a Civil defense department, and they had an accident once, and the technician told me that they hydro tested a Tank with 3/4 treads with a M25x2 test valve and it flew up in the ceiling when the pressure was about 130 Bar!
You could still see the hole in the ceiling from the impact of the valve😄
For cleaning tanks I use MAXI 3 Soap and it is very effective in removing residue from oil, grease and other things and then rinse thoroughly with clean hot water..
If you need to remove some rust first you can tumble it with small stainless steel screws (pointy self driving ones I don’t know the proper English name)

    Very interesting.
But don’t trust professional dive service with 20 years experience and TÜV in the Munich area.
Costed me several teeth, broken jaw, disrupted ear drum 13 years ago
Technician put a M25 into a DOT cylinder.
It exploded after 1.5 years while unloading.
Luckily the bridge to a lot of force before it broke
Took 5 years in front of court
    Do everything myself since then

I really appreciate this kinda of content! )) - Im just in the process of buying secondhand tanks here in the UK - but getting them serviced professionally... Still I have a curiosity into the process, and regardless love to have the skills do do myself if ever required! Thanks!

Thanks for an interesting video Achim. On a similar topic: Could you please make a video about your thoughts and experience regarding oxygen cleaning tanks/valves and regulators? What's your take on that topic and how often you really should do it, as long as you fill from good modern filling stations and dive shops.

Achim, why do you have a microphone on t-shirt, when sound is recorded from camera microphone? It sounds like you are in barel and only thing that is audible crystal clear is chirping of birds. I had really hard time understanding what you are saying.

    Hey Achim,

Great Video thank you very much!
I would be highly interested in how to o2 clean my valves and tanks.
And a question, as soon as you empty the tanks and oben then, how do you be sure that there will get no moisture in it and let it corrode even more especially on stell tanks?
    Thank you!

    Hallo Achim,

In Switzerland, official testing is mandatory, also for private persons, provided you want to transport your tanks in a car (-> Verordnung Beförderung gefährlicher Güter auf der Strasse). I guess this might be similar in EU-countries. Also, many dive centers will refuse filling without valid inspection marks (happened to me in Italy).

Same in the USA. SCUBA cylinders are regulated by the Department of Transportation - "Transportation" being the operative word here 😊

Thanks for sharing Achim. I am a certified cylinder inspector/valve technician here in the United States. Cannot stress the importance of this subject matter enough.
We do hydrostatic testing every five years, and require an annual visual inspection every year. A sticker is placed on cylinders to indicate month and year of annual inspection.
If you purchase a used cylinder? Please bring it by our shop so we can help you verify it is safe and appropriate to your application? Please?

@@CoastalDevelopment Yes. The need for inspection is universal. That is why I am sharing how it is here in U.S. by law.
