    Games companies aiming for "live service" over "AAA singleplayer" games are burying the entire industry.
    Continuous profit from bare-bones, grindy trash, over meaningful one-time payment art, may be the final nail in the coffin.

    • @notoriousbmc1
      @notoriousbmc1 Před měsícem +2

      @@davidjones797 there's definitely room for both. But short production cost, with higher/continous yield will be more attractive than long production, and a once-off payment.
      They could use one to pay for the other, but that's where greed of the boardroom comes in.
      I can't imagine too many devs want to *just* be making soulless live service games. (Some "AAA" singleplayer games are also soulless)

      @@notoriousbmc1 I think at the end of the day make a good game regardless wether it’s single player or mp if it’s good and your not trying to rip off consumers then it’s a win win for everyone. But yes the problem in the industry is the greed with big publishers. What been cool the last year or so is that indie developers are really starting to make a big mark on the industry like balder gate 3 like hell divers independent studios that just want to make good games and not try to rip of consumer. Seeing both of them games blow up is really good for the industry and I feel there a big change coming where companies like EA/activision/ubisoft ect will no longer exist because there on a unrealistic path of grow grow grow. They will crash and burn and developers like larian and arrowhead will be the ones left. That doesn’t sound so bad to me. 🤣

    We really are living in Dark times in gaming. ~Our Tech has advanced but making games has gone out the window. Bring back making games in a similar style as previous gen games but utilize modern day advancements. Game projects like that will cost less $, take less time to build. We drastically need an array of different unique game types to select from. Right now consoles are almost useless. Unless you play COD only 1 or 2 games come out. We hardly see the amount of games we used to see and the different types of games we used to see. We need games that harness art design. Designs that have proved to be timeless. Cell shaded, low poly effects, pre rendered backgrounds, 2D, 2.5D, creative 3D that's not trying to be hyper realistic. Inspiration from previous gens should not stop, just because new consoles have come out. Timeless games don't need hyper realistic graphics. Some of the best games have creative art styles such as Sly Cooper. Anytime i say this someone in the comments always says: "well we have indie games" but that's not my point. I wish the gaming industry would recalibrate their focus & start making games for consoles with all sorts of styles & designs. Just look at current Gen consoles Game Library's? It's NOTHING compared to the N64, PS1, Xbox, GameCube, dreamcast, 360, PS2, Sega Saturn, classic PC games, etc. Life would be amazing If game companies will start making games that are inspired by these previous gen designs. We shouldn't leave those unique aspects of gaming in the past. Hopefully the struggles of the modern triple AAA games will organically transition the gaming industry back towards a better direction. It's exhausting how long it's taking for most games to be made. Just for a lot of those games to end up being total let down projects anyways. It's crazy. Idk how these game companies have been able to keep getting away with this BS.

      I dig your post. I agree and disagree with some points, but mostly on track. I’ve done plenty of software development in my time. And yes, it really does take a LONG time to produce them. No doubt. It’s a very technical field with a lot of different hands in the same cookie jar. Major corporate structure and greed are honestly what holds it back. That’s the core of why game development has gone down the tubes. An old company I worked for used to have entire server farms just to render assets. Mostly done autonomously, without human intervention. And even with that, it still would take days just to render a few assets. I can’t imagine the amount of power and time it must take to render an entire game. Players need to learn patience and companies need to learn how to properly embrace, appreciate, and reward talent. Instead of the current barren landscape of laid off technical experts to line the executives pockets. What a sad situation.

    We’ve seen how it doesn’t work for big games or small games as starfield didn’t increase their numbers and the studio that made hi-fi rush is just gone now, if those two reasons don’t spell out how subscriptions don’t help these companies like they’ve stated they do than I don’t know what does.
    The thing Xbox just needed to do was make great games I know Phil doesn’t agree with that notion but it’s one of the reasons PlayStation is still in this business and it’s half the reason nintendo still exists as well.
    Lastly, I will always say this, the abk deal is the worst deal Xbox ever made for themselves they basically latched on a $70b leech hoping that it would stop the bleeding but in actuality they basically chopped off all of their limbs and are hoping that they will grow back.

Sony will hang in there for another generation, I think, but the writing seems to be on the wall. PC is a better deal for publishers since they've already eliminated physical media from their eco system. It's possible Sony could turn things around if the inevitable PS6 is widely available at launch, the price point is more appealing than a mid-range gaming PC and they don't hold the software back by making it also work on the PS5. 11:56
    Or the future might be mobile gaming.

    Nintendo recovered from the Wii-U gen by making Mario Od and BOTW for the Switch. A console a lot of people were uneasy about.
    They also recovered from the disasterous 3DS launch by lowering the price and making excellent games and bundles. Then worked on the hardware.
    PlayStation had a rough go during 3's era. They recovered by releasing excellent games for 4 (Spider Man, God of War, The Last of Us etc)
    Scott and Josh are 100% correct. It is about the games, always has been. No ammount of corporate scheming replaces a quality product and player enjoyment.
    Where's Fable? Elder Scrolls 6? Gears of War? Etc etc. If they had released even one of these highly sought after titles, they would be in better shape.
    Passing the buck to a previous mistake is weak leadership.

    The one problem with the Helldivers 2 conversation is that Sony is not giving the breakdown on how many of the 12M sales were actually on PC. So far the PC sales of other PS ports have been 10% of the console sales or less. I tend to think Helldivers 2 is the same, but Sony needs talking point for areas of differentiation to satisfy board members, stockholders and public pundits to avoid stock dips on “The same old successful PlayStation news.” We’ll have to wait see, but of the 12M sold I suspect only roughly 1.2M are PC sales. The day and date on PC is really just to maximize multiplayer counts, but depending on the breakdown they may have needed for that. Keep in mind Sony hasn’t released a significant MP in years so the PlayStation console market was living in a first party drought of MP games so there are valid reasons for Helldivers 2 to be successful just on PS5 console where the majority of AA/AAA shooter games on PC are MP.

    I'm not sure what the problem is with releasing games on multiple platforms. So many games and series have benefited from this (the Witcher, GTA, Call of Duty, Red Dead, Minecraft, etc) it doesn't doom a console, because a console is made for games. Without the games and the devs and the people...the console and the brand die. That is the issue with Microsoft. Shutting down their studios. laying off the people trying to feed their familes. maybe if Hi-Fi Rush had been multi-plat the studio could have survivied and all those devs would still have jobs. I even hate the idea of timed exclusives. that's just strong arming a dev or publisher or both. It's almost like a giant paywall and it's anti-consumer. The world is getting too expensive and too exclusive and it's driving me nuts. Everyone wants their cut until you split a consumer's wallet 75 ways and then the consumer cuts ties with everything. Eventually you will hit a breaking point. You have spotify, apple music, youtube music, netflix, hulu, disney+, mgm+, hbo max, paramount+, peacock, apple tv..... entertainment is getting way too complicated, convulted, expensive and filled with ads, paywalls, and microtransactions. I kind of went off on a rant but I think it's the opposite. You guys are thinking short-term. Look at the bigger picture.

    • @Evamaster456
      @Evamaster456 Před měsícem

      That works for those companies because they don’t have any associated proprietary hardware. For platforms like Xbox & PlayStation the games are more of a gateway to get people to invest in the ecosystem. Which is done by buying games (not just exclusives), movies, and other purchases through their store fronts. Each of which MS or Sony (depending on platform) gets a cut. The only way these companies would make the jump to being primarily 3rd party is by either removing the proprietary hardware (consoles) from the equation entirely or making them more of a niche side of their strategy. Sort of like how Steam makes Steam Decks but only in limited numbers to reduce production costs since their primary business is a PC games storefront. What you’re saying isn’t impossible, but would be a huge shift for these platform holders and the industry at large.

    I think the hellblade 2 argument about pc n console gamers was brought up cos it showed that if u release something day one on pc people will buy, I'm a console gamer and do believe there is a complete difference between console and pc and one of the main reasons is if your in the know even if a game comes out for console exclusive or not there are ports or emulators where u can get these games for free so if you want it day one or 2 or 3 on pc u can grab it however if you just introduce it there is a market for people just buying it and that will surely increase devolper revenue which I don't care what contracts they've signed they done it to be profitable to be able to continue making more games at a profit, that's the whole reason we had the leap in console game prices in the first place, and it will be interesting to see when gta launches because they could and probably will introduce and new price point and get away with it because it's gta and maybe over develpers will follow suit, maybe not to the same price point but still introduce a hike which is a double edge sword because you get more money from a product but potentially don't sell as many

    The assessment that Xbox is in trouble because of the bigger fish at Microsoft is correct. However, I disagree with the rest. What continues to kill the Xbox brand is PC getting Xbox exclusives and this obsession with transforming games into a subscription service. GamePass is not an unknown that needs marketing, people by and large know what it is. The proposition of spending $299 on Series S to rent games didn't appeal to the mass market and that's why Series consoles are selling worse than the Xbox One, which had exclusives and didn't bet its identity on renting games. I want Xbox to be competitive with both Sony and Playstation, but its time to throw in the towel in the direction of renting games and Series S all digital hellscape.
