I assume the former first lady you're referring to is akie abe, because masako is just empress consort and according to the current japanese constitution & imperial household law means the emperor is just a symbol of the state so japan is like a crowned republic but officially considered a constitutional monarchy because the emperor is considered a ceremonial head of state without even nominal political power because he has to appoint the prime Minister elect without declining appointment according to article 6.

The Japanese come from a very authoritarian background, very oppressive. That means something really bad was accepted and followed. Same with neoclassical Keynesian economic model they applied with rigor after the 90's crash. It's been over 2 decades of stagnation, recession and debt, yet they keep doing it. They haven't learn lol. It wasn't protectionism, government infraestructure and subsidies what created their powerhouse but competitiveness and open markets, like China. Yet they still think the Olympics (another white elephant) it''s the key to their success when their barely make it through thanks to tourism. They always had hard work ethic and high quality education, that's another good thing from them but unfortunately they can always accept and follow bad trends like they have in the past. Blame China, Japan manufactured a lot of our consumer goods for years but once China developed and started providing lower cost labor, they took over that industry. As far as being the number one economy, the geography and demographics of Japan is definitely not on their side. It's hard for a country with a declining population of around 100 million to compete with a country of 300 million or 1 billion. It's a shame Japan's economy has stagnated but at the same time it's amazing that they've done what they've done with what they have. I know that Japan is still an amazing country because I just got back from Tokyo 2 days ago.
