My absolute favorite Figaro! Legendary singers Hermann Prey, Mirella Freni, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Kiri Te Kanawa, Maria Ewing all together in a single video, isn´t it perfect? Conducted by Karl Böhm and staged by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle. thanks for posting!
I love it! This is the funniest rendition of this aria ever XD I was guffawing through the whole thing. Hermann Prey is perfect as the smug Figaro and so is Maria Ewing's panic-stricken Cherubino, poor thing (such a cute Cherubino^..^)!
What a great production this was!! I love the young Maria Ewing's Cherubino--overplayed, but you can't take your eyes off her! Earlier in the opera, she delivers a wonderful performance of "Voi che sapete."
Prey was always compared to Fischer-Dieskau - they are soooo different - F-D was a great intellectual and had a wonderful voice - very light, but somehow he managed to sing Verdi and Wagner well. Prey was just glorious-it was one of those perfectly produced voices, round and luscious. He was also a wonderful person.

Is that actually Fischer-Dieskau in the background, laughing at the scene? I think he is playing the Count Almaviva. Nice to see both baritones here in one film, because they were the great German baritones of the 20th century. But clearly, Prey has the better role in this opera!
That Cherubino is played by American mezzo Maria Ewing. I have seen a filmed production from Glyndebourne of her as Rosina in The Barber of Seville, and she is good both as an actress and singer, with nice exotic looks too, probably a mulatta or part native American. In playing the title role Richard Strauss' opera SALOME, she was noted for actually appearing completely nude on stage as per the actual stage direction! Maybe she wanted to show how nice looking she was :)
Antillas 636, my friend, Merry Christmas to you! Have you heard of the release by "Deutsche Grammophon" of the complete Mahler/Bernstein DVD collection? I've seen it on TV some years ago and it is very good. For those whom are not (yet...) Hermann Prey fans, just check out how Bernstein salutes him at the end of the 8th Simphony!
@karllegrand yeah i know, i love opera.....but still...maybe it was this specific production that i didnt like...Also, "non piu andrai farfallone amoroso"....i thought this was a bass aria?
As an Italian, I can say we need subtitles for Italian operas too, because not always the singing is clear enough to understand clearly the words, especially when more then one singer are singing different words together; also, this is Italian from centuries ago, so some words and constructions may be not be used anymore, making even more difficult to understand what they're singing about. In fact, when they air opera on Italian TV, it always has subtitles.
Yeah, I do the same for things in English. I've been learning German, and I watch a lot of German movies with German subtitles, as I'm still not quick enough to decipher what is being said at a casual speaker's pace. In opera, especially with Mozart, he'd have 4 people singing 4 completely different statements at the same time.
No, Figaro was written for a basso cantante, a bass with good height - like Cesare Siepi, his performance of this aria (with Erich Kleiber conducting) is my absolute favorite. Kleiber's conducting is a lot more fleet-footed and charming compared to Böhm's wooden conducting too.
