Reason why you aren’t hearing as many sound effects in this album is because keyboardist/turntablist Frank Delgado wasn’t in the band yet. He joined in on the Around the fur album and he’s responsible for the synths and ethereal type effects you hear a lot more in white pony and later albums.
while not an official member of the band at the time, Frank did contribute to 2 tracks on this album "Minus Blindfold" and "Fireal"
@@pushpauseandwave Yess!!! You are right Frank Participate in every single album, just in adrenaline is not credited, and actually didn't tour with them until 1996.
This was recorded live, so less room to add stuff later. I love this record because of it, makes it even more visceral! I cant wait for you to listen to their 4th record, Self titled. To me, its Deftones in a nutshell. Even tho they were dealing with a lot of internal problems (divorces, heavy drug usage, etc), its a beautiful piece of art. Its cover summarizes it pretty well.
Didn't know it was recorded live, makes sense why this album has a different, almost acoustic sound to it.

Around the Fur and White Pony are definitely more mature, but Adrenaline is so pure! It's super raw and in your face, it's just great ^^
Bored is the perfect opener to an album like this and one of my favourite Deftones songs ever, but to me the most interesting tracks on Adrenaline are Fireal and Fist: they sound like the guys were already trying to create the sound that you heard in ATF and White Pony, they were already experimenting and trying to do something different from the rest of the album, as you noticed ^^

Birthmark, Fireal, and Fist are definitely my favorites from the album. You should react to their Like Linus demo tape!
This was the first Deftones album I listened to before going balls deep into their other albums and it completely blew me away by its greatness. Your analysis is on point with how bare and skeletal the songs sound compared to their later work, but it’s still raw and energetic. Cheers!

1 week was an absolute banger. I used to jam Firreal in my lowered Honda Civic with 3 10s in the trunk. That song was my neighbors favorite song, they just didn’t know it. 😂

Your Deftones reviews have become a highlight for me. Awesome to see you go through these albums, can't wait for you to do [Self Titled] that ones my favorite. Live, Engine no. 9 is a BANGER, the call and response between Chino & the audience is/was powerful.

Every Deftones album is different from the others. They all have very different feels to them, but they are all still recognizably Deftones.
There's something cool about hearing their progression chronologically, and that's how many Deftones fans experienced their albums. I've been a fan since finding them in 2000 and it's been awesome see what each new album has been like since they do progress further on each album.
But It's also cool to listen in random order to really see the major differences.
Either way you do it, you will thoroughly enjoy the rest of their stuff. There are a few more masterpieces coming up for you.

As a fan since the beginning, I still feel that tracks five through nine on adrenaline are the best portion of any album.
The ending of birthmark is one of my favorite parts of any Deftones song. I can rewind over and over and listen to that last 45 seconds.
Really looking forward to see which album you decide to review next.

Hey love your reactions. Deftones are my favorite band and I always love seeing new people get into them. Imo I think you should go in order from the self titled on because of the way the way they grow so much between every album there. Also their original bassist Chi is only on the self titled, and the follow up to that, Saturday Night wrist. He unfortunately was in a car accident after that which left him in coma for a couple years until he passed away. Their next album Diamond Eyes was a tribute to him, and just a really big comeback for the band, as there was a lot of turmoil between the band mates during the the previous couple albums.

So many classics on this one, nosebleed, root, birthmark, engine n9, gotta love those riffs! Although it's a more restrained sounding album there's definitely their trademark dynamics on display.

Molly I love the way you hold the microphone, very professionall. Wow when this album came out I was 25 years old and living in Guatemala. I remember hearing it at the University with my friend Caco ((where are you)). We got blown away, forget KoRn. Now I live in Sweden and have 3 guitars and 1 bass tuned to Deftones, my favorite band. Back when the boys were tuned in standard lol. I just watched an interview of Stephen and Chino with Dunlop talking about string gauges and tuning. I love them so much!

You should react to Loathes album “I let it in and it took everything”. They are like a modern metal version of Deftones and the album got very high praise.
Another great reaction. Just for info, the last track is actually called Fist. I don't know how the First mislabel occurred years ago.
It is such a unique track, and in my top 5 Deftones cuts. The story has it that it was an impromptu jam recorded by a different producer who has a knack for getting special moments out of the artists he works with.

This album, although a bit unrefined and unpolished, it’s still one of my favorites. Deftones in their growing stages. Personally, I would suggest you do their self titled album next, maybe work your way up from white pony, but I’d be happy to see wherever you plan to go in their discography

Maybe you could go in order to see their progression as a band. I say that despite really wanting you to check out Diamond Eyes which is my favorite album but it’s their 6th studio album. The self titled album and Saturday Night Wrist are the 4th and 5th studio albums before Diamond Eyes.
You should do Self Titled or, going back to their latest albums, Gore.
Your analysis of their albums are great. It's real cool watching someone discover a band they decide to really dive into their discography.
Definitely check out their album "Saturday Night Wrist". It was created at a time when the band was about to fall apart due to drug use and other things, but it is a beautiful work of art. You won't regret checking it out.

Man this album gots some of the bedt vocals and Primo choruses!!!!!!!!!(!!!!!)

Great channel, just found your reactions and going to start at the beginning and go through all the Deftones albums. Just FYI the last track is called 'Fist' not First. The reason it sounds so different is it's produced by Ross Robinson while the rest of Adrenaline is produced by Terry Date who has worked with Deftones on a ton of their albums.

YES, your description of White Pony sounding like it's recorded in a warehouse and Andrenaline sounding really "contained" is super on-point. This one sounds literally like a garage band jamming out to me, and I love that about it.
By the way Molly have you heard Korn's 1994 debut album? I'm curious what you would think of them, lol. They were notably the first band to fuse metal with hip hop grooves, and Jonathan Davis is a very interesting, albeit very emotionally damaged frontman, but likeable. CHINO features on their second album as well, doing a cover of Ice-Cube's "Wicked"
That's what I love about Adrenaline too, that jam session vibe to it. Really raw energy! I haven't heard Korn, aside from maybe a random track here or there. I will have to check out their music!

The band Far was like a sister band to deftones you should really check them out. they always used to tour together and had a similar sound.

4:53 Chino touches on the subject of boredom again on the chorus of "Lhabia".
Most of the songs on this album were recorded in one take. From what i understood but yep i remember i listened to rhis album almost religiiously back in '97....
I like the rawness of the album. «First» is my favorite song on the album.
3:18 as Chino knows how to rap very good, he's also really good at spoken word, something he and Chi Cheng (their bassist) were into a lot.
I reccomend checking out their album Saturday night wrist, it’s probably their weirdest album and minus one really bad song is a fantastic and underrated gem in their discography.
I plan on it! Can't wait to see what sound they embrace on Saturday Night Wrist.

Awesome review! I love the fact that you went from White Pony to the beginning. You were able to hear the progress, but reversed. I honestly think you should now start from the album AFTER White Pony that is called "Deftones" or S/T. Since you've already heard OHMS, now you can hear their progress from their 4th album to their 9th album (if you're up for the challenge). IF you do happen to start with S/T, I would recommend watching this video that I am going to link; it was a promotional video/dvd that record stores had around to promote their 4th album and it would be cool for you to see how they grew from Adrenaline - White Pony. It's a short 15 minute video. It ends with a performance of the first track from S/T. Then you can move onto listening to the album from there.

your deftones videos are so cool! do you know glassjaw? if not, i think you would really enjoy listening/reacting to their worship and tribute album or the coloring book ep, both amazing projects and somewhat cult classics under the post-hardcore/alternative metal umbrella. their first record is also dope but the lyrics have not aged well at all, lots of teenage frustration and misogyny.
I think a few people have thrown that name around in the comments, not familiar with their music but I will have to give it a listen. Thanks for the recommendation!
Glassjaw is so fucking good, they definitely have a strong Deftones influence which is great. Worship and Tribute is a classic hands down.
Glassjaw is another great band for the newly Deftones initiated, they don't have a huge discography either so you could get through them pretty quick.

So What Albums Have You Heard From Them (Both Reaction & No Reaction), I Also Realize You Kept Talking About The Boredom Theme & Well The Album Is Called Adrenaline So Maybe The Album Is About Wanting Action.
I've heard and done reactions to their first three, and I heard Ohms when it came out last year. I love all of them. That's a really good point about the tie between boredom and adrenaline, and it's like they mimic that with the sound too (quietness for boredom, loud screams for adrenaline).
