  • On the 8th of May 1945 at about 11 pm, the document between Allies and Germany was signed which officially stated that the Nazies would stop fighting. Thus this day has become the Victory Day in Europe because the war in Europe has finally ended after almost six years of incessant combat. However, when the document between Germany and the Allies was signed, it was the 9th of May already in the Soviet Union, so it’s the 9th of May that’s considered Victory Day in Russia. In most of the world Victory Day is the day of remembrance. World War II was the bloodiest conflict in human history. At least 75 million people perished. So, it is not the day of celebration by any means. Because there is nothing to celebrate.
However, in Putin’s Russia, this undoubtedly very important day was turned into the symbol of ideological propaganda against the West. I was born in a post-Soviet state, and I have been fluent in Russian since childhood. Если есть русскоговорящие, оставляйте, пожалуйста, комментарий. Because of that, anything related to Russia is very important to me, because Russia has a huge influence over my home country and the region in general. And I spent a lot of time on the Russian speaking segment of the internet.
