Imagine a scenario: one evening, you are walking with your child in front of your house. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a car jumps the curb and hits your child with tremendous force, causing an immediate and tragic loss. Later, you find out that the driver of that car was under the influence. Now, if I were to tell you that you are "responsible" for your child's death, those words would cut deep into your soul. You might even want to choke me for saying that. But let's clarify the meaning of "responsible."
The word "responsible" comes from "response" and "able," which means having the capability to respond. In our lives, unjust events happen, and we may think we are not at fault. However, what really matters is how we choose to respond to those events. We often forget this crucial distinction.
In this video, we explore the power of choice in our reactions. We all face numerous unfair situations, and it is not about assigning blame but understanding our ability to respond. We can choose how we react to a given situation, and that choice can make a significant difference in our lives. But how can we determine which response is appropriate or best?
The truth is, there is no single "best" or "correct" response. We cannot predict with absolute certainty the consequences of our choices. However, we can make informed estimates based on our experiences. By asking ourselves whether the chosen reaction aligns with our values and prepares us for the consequences, we can make a more conscious decision.
Consider this: Suppose someone hands you a loaded gun and challenges you to run 26 miles within five hours. Failure to do so would result in them shooting your entire family. In this extreme case, what would you choose? The critical factor is that you took responsibility for your reaction, whether you ran or stood your ground. In life, events unfold, and we must realize that we cannot change the past. Instead, we can choose to be mindful of our reactions and take ownership of our responses.
Let's challenge ourselves to be more aware of our reactions, embracing the responsibility for our choices with pride and joy, rather than being bogged down by resentment and suffering. Remember, life's moments, both good and bad, are opportunities for us to exercise our freedom of choice.
