  • "I believe that losing my hearing was one of the greatest gifts I've ever received," says Elise Roy. As a disability rights lawyer and design thinker, she knows that being Deaf gives her a unique way of experiencing and reframing the world -- a perspective that could solve some of our largest problems. As she says: "When we design for disability first, you often stumble upon solutions that are better than those when we design for the norm."

People in the comment section who are saying she's wrong and that "disabled people are not an asset but a burden" must be incredibly unaware of how many people are given the label "disabled." A lot of times, disabled means "different from the norm." They just can't always see it. A lot of people with ADD are incredibly creative and provide a lot of entertainment on CZcams. The list goes on. One example of a more immediately apapparent disabled person: the leading designer for slaughterhouses in the US (being more humane, efficient, sanitary) is autistic. She got into the minds of the animals to a degree "normal people" couldn't fathom and thus used their natural behavior to our advantage. I'll leave it there but there are so many more examples out there.

As an interior/urban designer I have to agree. For some reason I've always wandered how blind people perceive the world, I feel like disabled people could add so much to design when creating better environments. It's a pity how many people look at this as a win/lose (if they get what they want, we won't). It's a benefit for everyone.

i’ve worked with and along side people with all kinds of disabilities for over 20 years. I have seen the great value of the majority of people I worked with and alongside over and over again. And much of it came from the very things talked about in this video. The key was figuring out how this person’s unique situation (both the disability and the skills and techniques they had to develop because of the disability, along with their natural strengths) could be an advantage, and finding the work situations where they could use this advantage to benefit their employer.

I have Asperger's Syndrome, which includes executive dysfunction (characterized by disorganization and having a hard time multitasking and prioritizing). A lot of the mnemonic devices, organization methods, and other things I use to help me through school have been adopted by classmates because they realized it helped them too. People who say that the disabled are useless, burdened, or less worthy of life don't know what they're talking about. Diversity is more than just skin color and body type. Neurodiversity is important too.

Asperger's affects everyone differently. I'm sorry you've had such difficulty with it, but that doesn't make anybody's experience less valid. And this is the 21st century. We have skyscrapers and airplanes. We have houses with heating and air conditioning. We have easy access to hospitals and emergency rooms. Basic survival instincts are still there and still important, but they are no longer the main deciding factor on whether somebody or something is useful or not. If right now all of our cities and houses and electricity and Internet were to disappear, probably 75% of humanity would die in a few days. Does that mean all those people are worthless?

Disability creates a gap between the needs of the user and the information system. On the other hand, accessibility is the ability of the system to accommodate the needs and preferences of each individual regardless of any physical disability. This session explains how this gap can be filled with the inclusive design of web systems.

Is it fair that the lipstick you use may have been produced with chemicals that destroy the environment? Is it fair that you are making a statement without research to back it up?
Is it fair that you are typing about problems instead of out solving those problems?
The only thing you really need is food, clean water, and shelter. Maybe clothes depending on your environment. So maybe everything you have in excess of this you should just give away.
I just sent 4 bags of shoes and clothing to Kentucky with a giant load from our other friends going there too. You all sprouted from somewhere so its all the like possible that all humans can have 'unideal' genetics. We can only trace ourselves so far back. So dont be so gross please. you never know what life will hand you. Also your lack of empathy isnt 'ideal' either now is it? well if only we can appreciate what strength we have when we got it. If you want to improve humanity so much then, get up off your lazy bum and find a way around the problem. Think of this thousands of years ago humans never thought things that are possible today were possible then.

"Disabled" means you can't do things that most people can do.
I have autism, which means that unless something is very intuitive I can't learn on my own, and I physically cannot handle loud noises and crowds. I also can't filter out little noises at night, which prevents me from sleeping That's a problem if I want to live in a city, which is where all the jobs I want are. That is definitely a disability. There is no way around it. Unless I want to live out in the country and settle for a job that I hate but is easier, I'm gonna have to deal with a world that is inherently difficult to navigate.
However, just like the TED Talk says, having to adapt to a different way of interacting with the world means that I (as well as other people with disabilities) learn to see things differently, which leads to innovation.
I don't think anybody's suggesting we cater to people in that we give handouts or anything. I think the point is that we should find ways to make technology all-inclusive, in a way that doesn't inconvenience anyone but could actually make things better for everyone. People with opinions and perspectives outside of the majority, can see things from an angle that will improve the lives of the many.
