Havoc Makes A Beat From Scratch At HNHH Studio

  • Watch as Havoc creates magic in our studio.
The other week, if you 'Like' us on Facebook (if you don't, get on that), you may have seen our live stream of our studio session with Havoc. The OG producer and rapper was in NYC promoting his upcoming album with another talented beatsmith, Alchemist (The Silent Partner), and stopped by to give our users a behind-the-scenes look at his creative process when it comes to beat-making.
For those that missed the live stream, you can catch what went down above. Havoc actually did two different beats, you'll notice things switch up in the second half of the video, but they both sound extremely dope. Who wants them? (!!). Hav also narrates his process for us, and even gets to freestyling over his beat towards the end of the video.
Take a look above, and be sure to cop The Silent Partner when it drops on Friday.

    Not many can . . . .
    1) Make a beat
    THEN
    2) Lyricaly Destroy it
    THEN
    3) PRODUCE the album it goes on.
    THEN
    4) REPEAT the process SUCCESSFULLY for 30 year's
    Congratulations Havoc

This dude is an underrated legend and still got a flow better than 90% of today's industry. He also just did a Rhythm Roulette where he sampled off three records so get off his knob about youtube sampling. Sometimes youtube may have rare songs that are hard to find on vinyl or CD

I sample whatever sounds good. Television show themes, commercials, eerie movie sounds, etc. You have to look at the whole picture. There are so many sounds in this world that most "producers" won't even think about using because they are so stuck doing what they are accustomed to doing. Not me. Constant evolution over here.

shut up it does not matter where you get your samples from all that matters is the beat when its done. People have beat on trash cans and recorded hits. Music is experimental and there is no right or wrong way art is just original and personal to the person doing it.

You sort of have the right idea, but there is more to it than that. Downloading tracks off CZcams means the file is compressed and has a lot of its dynamics and sonic quality diminished.
If you're serious about sampling, you would consider this an important factor and maybe dig online for a FLAC or wav file of the track you wish to sample, but if at all possible, sample the record yourself. But if you're not serious about it, well.....
I would also question your "people have beat on trash cans and recorded hits" comment. Can you send me a link to these "hits"? It's possible trash cans have been recorded as a percussive element in a track, but don't get carried away.
Music is art, but don't be using that as an excuse to take shortcuts and produce sub standard music. What do you want your musical legacy to be? Trash cans on cut up tracks off youtube? Fuck outta here...

comment to the dude below... sometimes you have to sample off of youtube or a cd..... when you love music it doesn't matter how how you get... its all about how it comes out.... for the love of music......

Havoc always gets to the grimey menacing part of any sample. You could feed him some Mary Poppins and he could get you some late night killer on the prowl shit out of it.
