  • This video documents CSX Transportation locomotives sighted in and around Cumberland, Maryland during August of 1990. A lot of Chessie System activity on this one as we take a close look at one of the ex-Baltimore & Ohio's largest classification yards. We were here to catch as many of the Chessie System SD50's in action as we could while they were still wearing their original Chessie paint. If you like watching the early stages of CSX, and the Chessie SD50's, then this video is for you.

Amazing timepiece of a happy era for me, and a plethora of hood units, four-axle units, an SD35 here (or so, it looked to be one), and good ole Chessie System, and still a colorful landscape of different railroads.
Read that Chessie System tinkered with their GP30s - reworked them and downrated them to 2000hp. This was not disimilar to Burlington Northern's GP30 and GP35 rebuilds.

    One location clarification:
Where you shot the loaded coal train, it was actually on Cranberry Grade, at Amblersberg WV. 17 mile grade is primarily faced by westbounds going to Grafton from Cumberland and loaded coal drags always head east. Additionally, CSX on 17 mile grade in those days only had 1 or at most 2 units assigned for trains on helper service to get over that stretch. 3 packs of SD50s were mostly used on the Newburg/Cranberry grade to Terra Alta and on occasion up the Deer Park grade to Altamont.
