  • Structural engineers play a crucial role in the development of any new structure however, the analysis and design processes that they use are not widely know by many. In an effort to share what I've learnt about the role of structural engineers in construction over the past 2 years, in this video I take you through the 4 stages that structural engineers go through in order to bring a project to life. Enjoy :)

Good explanation. I would also pick up the design contribution of connections by the fabricator , specialist contractors for specialist areas and the temporary works specialist. I would also reflect the importance of multi-d coordination, risk and assumption management and integration. I have been doing this for 43 years since by masters and retiring this year. Love this work, I would do it all again if I could.

I wanted to ask you one thing, do you know if companies have more preference for engineers than capable architects? Im just finishing architecture and i really liked structures subjects but im worried that for this kind of jobs they would choose an engineering firstly.

My pleasure, I’m glad you are enjoying my videos! I’m not sure if this is the same where you live but in Australia only people with engineering degrees work as engineers. Architecture degrees in Australia cover completely different content and would not prepare you to work in structural engineering. Perhaps this is different where you live or you could complete a masters in engineering?

Welcome! I would suggest contacting small structural engineering companies in your area. This is where you will get the most exposure and experience. For the programs you should start learning, I would suggest you find out what’s popular locally. The easiest way to do this is to search for structural engineering jobs on LinkedIn and look in the skills section of the job description and see what programs they are wanting applicants to know. Hope this helps :)
