      Loreli hope you see this.
A few weeks ago my bunny was ripping out its hair from its chest and it started to eat it. We tried to take it out and open its mouth, but we Couldn't. A few minutes later she had a fast heart beat, was laying down frequently and a few times she layed down with her back down (like a human). I turned around for a second and when I looked back there was a huge chunk of hair infront of her. After that she acted normal. Is this normal for rabbits? How can I prevent this?

We've had the vaccine in the UK for a while and its completely fine. The rescue I work for gets all newcomers vaccinated with no side effects.
Other important information is that if your rabbit has caught it and died it can live on surfaces for up to 3 months and in the ground for up to 2 years. (Info i received from my vets and rescue)
Basically wait up to 3-6 months before getting a new bunny.
Edit: The 2 years is in completely ideal conditions it may be much shorter than that, but it is still best to cremate your bun rather than burying.

If only you made this video sooner 😞
Back in early 2019, I got my first two rabbits bongo and pongo. I absolutely ADORED them. I loved them to pieces. One morning, I woke up and turned over. I saw my rabbit on the floor laying down. I started stoking him but he felt cold and stiff. I kept tapping him thinking he had just fallen asleep. But then I saw foam around his mouth. (Keep in mind I was 12). My whole world turned upside down. You have no idea how horrible it feels laying next to your dead bunny. My other bunny bongo was running around in the tunnels. i wrapped up pongos body in a towel and brought him to the vets along with bongo. We asked the vets how he died and he said said rh2. I was very confused as they have never been outside (they were house bunnies) we then got bongo the vaccine and the vet said that it takes 5 days so there is a 50/50 chance he will die. We threw his toys, litter box everything really away and disinfected EVERYTHING. It had been 4 days and on the 5th day I had a sleepover at my school (it was my last day before I went to high school) but when I got back the next morning bongo had passed away during the night. Right on the 5th day. The strange thing about it is that there were no symptoms at all. They didn’t look lethargic or stop eating and because this is so new, we didn’t know that there was a vaccine or that it even existed. I was DEVASTATED. I went into depression to the point where I started self harming. I cried a lot. I loved those bunnies. Even my profile picture is of them (go look). About a year later, we found these two french lops. Who were vaccinated against it all. Whom, I Have had for over a year now. I got them from an animal shelter where they both had been abandoned. Someone found them on the street and they were taken in ( they are brothers) now after a year they are doing much better and free roamed around the house. I really miss bongo and pongo and I can’t stress enough about getting this vaccine. ( if your country has it). Although it is not yet approved in America, it has been in the UK where I live. So. Anybody living in the uk or anywhere else where you have the vaccine, I strongly suggest you get the vaccine so that you don’t have to go through the devastation of loosing bunnies. Thank you for reading I hope you all keep safe! #blacklivesmatter

@@nathitaxo Yes, indoor rabbits are also at risk as the virus can be tracked in on your shoes and even the feet of other household pets like dogs coming home from walks, or cats who are allowed to roam outdoors, too. It's a horrible virus and kills very quickly, I've sadly seen a lot of rabbits who have had this and if it's caught early, even then the chances aren't very high for survival. The best form of 'cure' is prevention, so if your vet offers a vaccine, make sure your rabbits get it!

Here in Europe, especially France since I’m French, we have this vaccine for years now. It’s almost obligatory to do this one. Of course, there are side effects but it’s like every other vaccine. I had no issues so far with my 2 years old rabbit. Side effects are very rare, and if they occur, they are not that harmful.
I am really sorry that you don’t have this vaccine yet, I don’t understand why since it’s quite popular here. Every vet will tell you that it’s important to do it.

My bunny had 4 of those symptoms and the vet didn't know why. They thought it was GI Stasis. I spent all the money I had on bills trying to save her but she passed the rainbow Bridge March 18. She became a picky princess not wanting hay or pellets only veggies after getting spayed. We kept her full on critical care but it wasn't enough to stop GI Stasis. The only thing she loved more than eating veggies without taking a breath was kissing my arms and forehead for the hours I spent with her everyday. I miss her everyday. I rescued another bunny since then. She loves being held and running crazy around the room. I was planning on taking her for stroller rides through the store I work at but I'm not sure now.

The vaccines have been savely used in Europe for several years now. There are even different brands. Mine never had any side effects except of being a bit tired for a day once or twice. Its important tho to only vaccinate if the bunny has an healthy immune system, which is why it's necessary to get their poop checked beforehand (there can always be undetected parasites) and a general health examination. Considering how deadly and widely spreaded this disease is, to vaccinate is the only right thing to do.
Also something that is really important: if your rabbit died of rhd1/2 you MUST burn the body. If you bury your rabbit, the soil will be contaminated. All insects living there will carry the virus and since they are food for birds etc. it will only keep spreading and killing more and more bunnies/hares.

But it takes time ~1-2months before the vaccine can arrive from Europe. It's not normally available, and it's only for a special order for the time of outbreak, in limited quantities. The vaccine needs to be given every year, but the vets would have to request another special order and get approval with wild bunnies being affected the next year even if they were approved this year. So it's not actually available. So very important for us to sign the petition.

We're still taking our bunnies into the garden for playtime, as they're only free roamed in 1 room and the vet said it would be safe, especially given we've never seen any evidence of wild rabbits in the garden.

Excellent resource. I currently live in New Mexico and our House Rabbit Society worked hands on with our vets and state vet to get the vaccination. The clinic that I work at is one of 2 that are offering it. For my kiddos the vaccination was easy they didn't even feel it. They were monitored for 15 minutes to make sure there was no vaccine reaction.
I would highly recommend anyone who lives in a possible hot zone or near one to reach out to your rabbit rescues and vets letting them know you want the vaccine this will help bring it here.
We've had rabbits from neighboring states come get the vaccination with no reactions thus far. I feel fortunate to be able to get my kiddos vaccinated from this nasty disease.
I would recommend if any rabbit is going in to the Vet to ask the vet if they've either had any cases, have handled wildlife (we have a vet that volunteers so this isn't uncommon), or handled a sick rabbit that was showing symptoms that day. They may opt not to see your pet as the virus lives for months on organic material and although they wash hands and may have a change of scrubs available, they may want to protect a healthy rabbit from getting sick thus postponing or recommending another vet.

Our late rabbit, Dora, died of rhdv2 aged 1. It was so sudden, she appeared full of life the day before. The next day, she was apathic and went limp, so we took her to the emergency vet straight away. Her passing was very traumatic (in the car the bleeding started). The vet let us into the back room to say goodbye. I'll always remember her mouth bleeding and my fiancé's pain: it was his birthday, he was severely depressed and Dora was like a daughter to him. So he started sobbing so bad, and I could do nothing to help. Anyway the diagnosis was confirmed and we felt awful for not having vaccinated her. So when we got Errol, who's now 10 months old, we got him vaccinated straight away. No problem at all, it all went well.

You’re videos have been a huge help and we just wanted to say thank you so much for being such a good teacher and debunking many harmful beliefs! Thank you so much for all of what you do! You’ve made us much better pet owners already !

💔😭 I live in England. I lost my 2 beautiful bunnies last week due to this. Marble passed on Monday and Peep passed on Tuesday, wasn’t joking when she said they basically drop dead. Within hours after us noticing symptoms they were gone. We got their ashes back yesterday I’m so heartbroken especially as they were only 14 months old😭 so young and it was all so horrific.
Please please if it’s possible get your bunnies vaccinated!! If not try your hardest to avoid this virus getting into you’re homes.
A mistake I made cost my bunnies their lives, there’s nothing I can do now and I’ll never forgive myself.
Rest in peace Marble and Peep my beautiful boys, Ill always love you💙💙

I'm from Australia and its pretty much standard to get a calcivirus vaccination. RHDV1 strain of the rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (Calicivirus) was purposefully released in Australia as we have European rabbits as a pest species that dominates local wildlife. We just vaccinate our bunnies and they never seem too bothered. When I adopted my bunnies they'd already had their initial vaccination.

In the netherlands there is a vaccine. If you bring your bunnies for their annual checkup, they Automatically get it. My bunnies had no side effects and I'm very happy they're healthy! I singed the petition and I pray that america will allow this vaccine!

This has been happening as well in Canada in British Columbia. There’s a vaccine for the virus in that province but not the rest of the country. Hopefully it will be available for the rest of the provinces in Canada. I hope the US will get vaccines soon, this disease is so scary!!

Your voice always soothes my bunny so well. She falls asleep in my arms while we watch your videos together. It’s absolutely adorable ❤️ it’s funny that we’ve watched so many of your videos together that she even seems to recognize you now! You’re a bunny whisperer 😂

I live in the Netherlands, where this virus is a real issue as many places have a high wild rabbit population. The vaccine has worked well for my bunnies, who sometimes go outside to play in a designated area outside. However, this disease spreads very easily, so make sure not to pet other rabbits and forget to wash your hands after. Most importantly make sure that you always get the yearly booster in the same weeks as the previous year. A vet of mine once made the mistake and said that my rabbit did not need the booster until two months later. He did, they made a mistake in the system. A week after my other bunny was vaccinated, he became very sick. Lethargy was the first thing I noticed and we took him straight through, we recieved some vitamin drops. the next day he had a skyrocketing fever, and looked horrible. the overall survival rate, once a rabbit is at this stage is about 5-10%. nonetheless I provided round the clock care and his girlfriend, because she was vaccinated could keep him company. He is seven years old now and as magnificently grumpy as ever. Do note: once your rabbit has been sick, even if it survives, It will do a big number on their lifespan because it is so draining.

My rabbit died of the vaccin, the first year she was sick for few days, the next the same but milder and third time she died the next day very quickly. Vet said she probably was allergic to the vaccin which happens in 1 out of 1000 rabbits. I didnt see the connection and thought to do whats best for her, but didnt vacc my other rabbit anymore as they live indoors and was not high risk. My following rabbits I all vacced again living in high risk area for both RHD outbreak and myxomatosis and all did fine. This was all in Netherlands. I now live in Iceland and my current bun came from a wild population which was hit first time last year with the virus in this country. Many rabbits died, and people tried to rescue as much of the wild rabbits (population from released pet rabbits) as they could, he was one of them and vaccinated immidiately after vaccines came available to protect Icelandic pet bunnies and does fine.

I have two bunnys who lives outside. (We live in Denmark) they are both vaccinated. We did not experience any symptoms after they got their shots :)
I'm so happy you made this video. It is not that long ago there where an outbreak of the virus in Denmark, and it turns out not many knew about it :(
So by you making this video a lot of bunny-parents (and especially new bunny parents) gets to know about the seriousness of this disease and can do something about it before they lose their new family member!

In England rabbits get this , you make two appointments for Myxomatosis and two weeks later we go back for a second appointment this includes rhdv and they are fine.
