You said that No Exit was much more dramatic than real life because they were trapped. It obviously is more dramatic than real life, but I don't think it's because of them being trapped. There was a part in the play where the door opened and Garcin wanted to leave, but he didn't because he didn't like the view of him that he would have left Inez with. He said it would have been just as torturous to have the thought in the back of his head that Inez saw him as a coward. Also if he left, he might have just been paired with some more people and been right back into the same kind of situation, only this time he would have that thought of Inez's judgement on top of it making it even more torturous. I just thought that the door opening scene was a bit too significant to go unmentioned. Anyways, thanks for the video.
Would an equivalent scenario with two men & one woman be more likely to have been less dysfunctional & easier for all concerned to cope with ? I guess it's a subtle, behavioural science consideration

This sort of pairs two concepts that I like.. one is that hell is a real place on earth and you can find yourself there a lot quicker and easier than you'd think. And whether or not you can live with the burden of the watching/judging eye, without getting caught in the feedback loop of observing the observer and ultimately over observing yourself

In fact I did hesitate to finish typing "on earth" because I've always kinda imagined different states of mind/consciousness as being in different dimensions/realms if you will. I think Sarte reinforces the idea of things like meditation and reconnecting with nature, as those are both good ways of escaping the hell of other ppl but on the larger scale it reminds us that as much as we want to escape hell we also long for human interaction and both these opposing conditions are omni present and hard wired into our brains

I dont know how true it is, but we also tend to see ourself from an 'other' person point of view. so to ourselves too, we are an 'other' and thence, our own hell too

I've read through many comments but so far, I haven't seen anything that attempts to reconcile the Hell that Sartre presents with the actual Hell of solitary confinement IRL. Solitary confinement over a period of years is well-known to be torturous and its attendant problems can be devastating to individuals subjected to it. If "Hell" could be defined as /both/ conditions, could Hell then encompass "Life" and consciousness?

How i think: The antithesis of this would be something like unity while being authentically differentiated or like higher consciousness/synchronized existence. Something is missing, a 3rd component to achieve that. What is it? At least partial Submission of the self=ego?

quite often people cannot walk away from each other, such as in actual imprisonment and abuse. Even on a less severe level, waiting to quit a job. So it does apply to the real world for many. furthermore, there is an opportunity to leave- but they are too terrified. Which again, mirrors real human struggles in trying to escape toxic relationships. You see a real world mirror to that in the play to in the mistreated partners of all three. They were all toxic and now are trapped together.

Hell is other people . Its true. I do love a lot of people but it's hard and I'm guilty I guess of not been nice people sometimes but I'm working on myself to the point where I need nobody's validation to be myself .
What if one does not care about others opinion? What if one doesn't want or crave anything from the people in ones life, if they're around and things are good, that's fine, but it's also fine if they're indifferent and one splits ways? How can hell be other people if one understands that only the self matters? (Sorry I'm new to Philosophy, I don't know if that would be a question regarding Sartre or another Philosopher.)
Well, what if? I think you can follow out the lines of reasoning you're sketching here -- as well as determine whether there is such a person who does not care at all about other people's views. I would think, though, if you were such a person -- or a person who thought that only the self matters, it would be entirely pointless to be involved in youtube comments!
Gregory B. Sadler Thank you very much for your reply. I know several people who put too much importance on the opinions of others. They cry if they're not loved and adored by everyone. In that case Hell is truly other people. I think one can only be truly happy if one understands that another person's opinion, whether good or bad, doesn't really matter, only our own opinion of ourselves should have an impact on us. We choose to give it importance and let it make us feel bad or good. Some people commit suicide over comments they get on social media sites, and others might laugh about mean comments they get. Hell is other people if we allow them to be. Of course being stuck in a room with others would make it hard not to let the others drive one crazy. Like I wrote before, I'm new to these concepts, these are just my thoughts on an interesting topic and I will keep working on understanding them more. Thank you again. :)

Is it a mistake to think that "alien freedom'' is something like or derived from Hegel's selfconciences? It's look likes they are some depth similarites like "struggel to the death" and the threat that two freedoms posts to each other. Or it is just my bad impression.
It's similar to Hegel's conception of self-consciousness at its start (remember, that's very early on in the phenomenology, and is NOT Hegel's view of self-consciousness in general)

I have always been fascinated by this concept. However, I think that one may get into a bit of drudgery and entrapment with this. I have always thought that the other is inn essence a mirror of ourselves and then when forced to see ourselves it becomes hellish. One can perhaps see that the concept itself begs for transformation and in this transformative place we transcend this hell. This looks at many things and if one were to allow other philosophies to come in there may be a 🌈at the end. In No Exit there is a sense of the eternal kind of damnation however, maybe Sartre is posing something like an algebraic equation one in which the solving of it will set the characters free.

Gregory B. Sadler You don't so much sound like him, as you wouldn't have to try very hard to mimick his manner of speaking. The pauses, and dragging on certain syllables. Great breakdown though, I think a dose of self awareness and practicing mindfulness on the day to day, can help lessen the burden we put on other people.
If this word spreads, as you say, then inside it is the truth, no matter what phrase the author wanted to say. Everyone has their own truth ...if all the truths agree ...we have reached a consensus

i feel Sartre went for the angle, or hell angle of mental anguish. u may perceive hell as fire and a devil. the superficial way. or it just may be worse than u think. your own medicine times a hundred for infinity or maybe, you thought death would end your past, past shortcomings, and or past way of life.. well just wait. perceived friends or other people perpetuating your endless torture.
Hell is other human beings, at least, for most peoples bodies and souls; although, people who die alone in log cabins, or lose limbs from falling from a rock climb, might subjectively see it differently.
@@GregoryBSadler how about this? we all do things which may be considered bad. therefore, we use rationalizations to justify our behavior; we need a coping mechanism. however, when an "other" is added to the equation, we desperately want them to agree with our justifications for our possible bad behavior. this is why he couldn't leave the room; he needed them to corroborate his rationalizations. hell is other people not seeing things your way. heaven is being by yourself and believing all your self-serving rationalizations without repudiation.

Sartre doesn't really go in for either of those in his works.
Pretty sure Sartre was saying Hell is other people only because he was surrounded constantly by the French.
In my experience, there's no higher proportion of "hellish" people among the French than among other nations

Gregory B. Sadler Thank you very much for your reply. I know several people who put too much importance on the opinions of others. They cry if they're not loved and adored by everyone. In that case Hell is truly other people.
I think one can only be truly happy if one understands that another person's opinion, whether good or bad, doesn't really matter, only our own opinion of ourselves should have an impact on us.
We choose to give it importance and let it make us feel bad or good. Some people commit suicide over comments they get on social media sites, and others might laugh about mean comments they get. Hell is other people if we allow them to be.
Of course being stuck in a room with others would make it hard not to let the others drive one crazy.
Like I wrote before, I'm new to these concepts, these are just my thoughts on an interesting topic and I will keep working on understanding them more.

I always thought that this means: Hell is a place with new people to meet / Hell is a thing people do to each others.
Is it a mistake to think that "alien freedom'' is something like or derived from Hegel's selfconciences? It's look likes they are some depth similarites like "struggel to the death" and the threat that two freedoms posts to each other.
Or it is just my bad impression.
It's similar to Hegel's conception of self-consciousness at its start (remember, that's very early on in the phenomenology, and is NOT Hegel's view of self-consciousness in general)

You asked about Hegel. . . so, yes, Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit. Husserl really doesn't do an awful lot with the otherness of other people
No reciprocation in action, or words, is truly a broken mindset that produces broken systems.
I have always been fascinated by this concept. However, I think that one may get into a bit of drudgery and entrapment with this. I have always thought that the other is inn essence a mirror of ourselves and then when forced to see ourselves it becomes hellish. One can perhaps see that the concept itself begs for transformation and in this transformative place we transcend this hell. This looks at many things and if one were to allow other philosophies to come in there may be a 🌈at the end. In No Exit there is a sense of the eternal kind of damnation however, maybe Sartre is posing something like an algebraic equation one in which the solving of it will set the characters free.
Thank you for this informative video. I was wondering what difference does it make to have dead characters in a play and still make them want this and that from the other. Aren't we living that life while still alive? So, what significance does death has in this philosophical question?

Gregory B. Sadler You don't so much sound like him, as you wouldn't have to try very hard to mimick his manner of speaking. The pauses, and dragging on certain syllables. Great breakdown though, I think a dose of self awareness and practicing mindfulness on the day to day, can help lessen the burden we put on other people.

I'd say Nah. Hell in this is more complicated than just our reactions to others - or rather, the characters's reactions.

i feel Sartre went for the angle, or hell angle of mental anguish. u may perceive hell as fire and a devil. the superficial way. or it just may be worse than u think. your own medicine times a hundred for infinity or maybe, you thought death would end your past, past shortcomings, and or past way of life.. well just wait. perceived friends or other people perpetuating your endless torture.
Hell is other human beings, at least, for most peoples bodies and souls; although, people who die alone in log cabins, or lose limbs from falling from a rock climb, might subjectively see it differently.

@@GregoryBSadler how about this? we all do things which may be considered bad. therefore, we use rationalizations to justify our behavior; we need a coping mechanism. however, when an "other" is added to the equation, we desperately want them to agree with our justifications for our possible bad behavior. this is why he couldn't leave the room; he needed them to corroborate his rationalizations. hell is other people not seeing things your way. heaven is being by yourself and believing all your self-serving rationalizations without repudiation.
@@stubadub2k I would say that works for a lot of cases. Quite honestly, I don't think one needs to try to provide one single explanation about why "hell is other people" as if that explanation had to cover every case
