Fretless Gloss Finish using Gluboost CA Glue

  • I shot some clips along the way as I finished this fretless bass fingerboard. It takes many coats or you'll burn through when you level it out. The Gluboost doesn't bubble up and make white dots in the finish like some others will. Great products. The sound drops out periodically because I was listening to Helmet the whole time. Copyright claims over background music are fun. Just play the Helmet record Meantime while you watch this.

    Hum. Interesting. I would have just used nitro, shellac, or a normal material, but CA glue? I wouldn't have thought of that. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

      Yep. The Plek will plane the fingerboard. We also use it for planing during a refret. (Primarily that, actually- but it works great for fretless

    Really excellent video! I think I'm going to get a cheap fretless and try this process -- what cloths were you using to wipe it on? I ask because I imagine dust/fibers might be an issue. Did you find that to be the case?

    Looks good man. I'm about to do the same with one of my fretless basses, I cant seem to get the buzz out of certain spots and Ive had the bass for 20 years. I've read of people using two different super glues. Coats of a thicker on and then coats of a thinner kind as well as using the accelerator(glueboost?). What kind of super glue did you use? Hoping to just run to home depot by my house. Thanks!

      @13thStreetGuitars  Před 3 lety +2

      it's right there in the title and shown a lot in the video. 😉 Gluboost CA. Sounds like your fingerboard needs to be leveled. I do that in my Plek machine. If you have one nearby, I suggest that. Otherwise, a proper Planing by hand would be helpful. Then apply your finish. If you gloss up a wonky board.... you're just making the problems worse

      I find with Gluboost I don't get any bubbling when using it for finishing. After posting this video, I've found I prefer the Fill & Finish Thin for this job. It has less acetone, I'm guessing. It doesn't eat into the coats underneath as much.

      @@13thStreetGuitars Great video, and beautiful finish! I recently picked up a fretless neck for my Jazz bass, and want to do the same thing. Do you still recommending Fill and Finish Thin over Master Glu Ultra Thin for protecting the neck? I see that the Fill and Finish is described as 'flexible', and wonder if that will have any negative effects holding up to the abuse of round wound strings. I keep thinking these finishes need to be hard and smooth like glass, but I'm not an expert. Thanks!

    • @hughzero4
      @hughzero4 Před 2 lety +1

      @@caseycoppi9571 Flexible is better than brittle, I guess. The ultra thin has a lot of solvent in it and as you rub it on, it will eat into the previous layers. Seems like the regular thin doesn't do that as much. It goes on thicker and smoother. (less coats and less sanding)

      As the glue dries, yes. Do not hold onto them when the glue starts to dry! Toss them in the trash before that. You may not be putting enough glue on the shop towel if it's drying too fast.

      I have a weird method where I do the first coat or two, then sand it back to 400. Then I add 4 or 5 coats and sand it to 800 on the DA. Then a few more coats and go up to 1200. Then buff. You gotta load the corners of the board and feel it out as you go. Thanks for the kind words!
