Fretless Gloss Finish using Gluboost CA Glue

- I shot some clips along the way as I finished this fretless bass fingerboard. It takes many coats or you'll burn through when you level it out. The Gluboost doesn't bubble up and make white dots in the finish like some others will. Great products. The sound drops out periodically because I was listening to Helmet the whole time. Copyright claims over background music are fun. Just play the Helmet record Meantime while you watch this.
Hum. Interesting. I would have just used nitro, shellac, or a normal material, but CA glue? I wouldn't have thought of that. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for this great video. Followed your instructions and put 8 coats of thin, not ultra thin, GluBoost CA on a neck I defretted. Came out great.
Great to hear!
Beautiful!
That was stunning: ... and the Bass thing was cool too!
"I do that in my Plek machine." - It can level the wood too, not just the frets? You guys did my 12 string about a year ago BTW. Good job.
Yep. The Plek will plane the fingerboard. We also use it for planing during a refret. (Primarily that, actually- but it works great for fretless
Really excellent video! I think I'm going to get a cheap fretless and try this process -- what cloths were you using to wipe it on? I ask because I imagine dust/fibers might be an issue. Did you find that to be the case?
Shop Towels (the blue ones) - Also use the Fill and Finish Thin Gluboost
Hey, do you sand between every coat or only after every few?
After every few. Also, I now recommend the GluBoost FIll-N-FInish Thin for this job. It goes smoother.
Wait so you basically drenched the board with regular glue and sanded to polish it? Didnt know glue could be that glossy
If it gets better than that I’ve never seen it
Thank you for the kind words
Looks good man. I'm about to do the same with one of my fretless basses, I cant seem to get the buzz out of certain spots and Ive had the bass for 20 years. I've read of people using two different super glues. Coats of a thicker on and then coats of a thinner kind as well as using the accelerator(glueboost?). What kind of super glue did you use? Hoping to just run to home depot by my house. Thanks!
it's right there in the title and shown a lot in the video. 😉 Gluboost CA. Sounds like your fingerboard needs to be leveled. I do that in my Plek machine. If you have one nearby, I suggest that. Otherwise, a proper Planing by hand would be helpful. Then apply your finish. If you gloss up a wonky board.... you're just making the problems worse
Thanks. I know you are using glueboost. I was just wondering you used two different kinds like I've read. A thicker and thinner glue.
@@nilswestdal3254 Ohh! OK. Yeah, it's good today down some of the fill n finish. You can do it all with the ultra thin, but it takes longer
@@nilswestdal3254 to lay down (my gosh, the autocorrect kills me)
Dude this is phenomenal and the exact video I was hoping to see when I searched it! Can I ask what buffing compound you're using? I can't quite make it out in the video. Thanks a bunch for posting this 😁
One of the really fine one from Jescar. I have a few.
What is that buffing compound you use?
Jescar Glanzmax 30 is the one I currently use. Then sometimes I'll follow it on a softer wheel with the 15 from the video. Also note I've found the Gluboost FIll N Finish Thin works much better for the finish.
I don't have a buffing wheel oh no!
You can get buffing wheels as drill bit attachments as a cheap alternative.
Ryobi sells a great drill buffing/polishing kit for under $20.
What about the radius? It's still beautiful.
The radius is there and intact. I'm leveling the finish to the radiused fingerboard. Watch the last 10 seconds of the video and the radius is apparent in the gloss.
Can I send you a neck from a squire Jazz fretless? Your cost for everything to include postage. I’m in Florida.
Please reach out to us via our website and we can discuss this project. We would be happy to take that on. www.13thstreeguitars.com
What kind of cloth are you using to apply the glue?
Blue "Shop Towels"
@@13thStreetGuitars I thought so. Thanks!
What is the difference between Gluboost and ordinary Super Glue from StewMac ?
I find with Gluboost I don't get any bubbling when using it for finishing. After posting this video, I've found I prefer the Fill & Finish Thin for this job. It has less acetone, I'm guessing. It doesn't eat into the coats underneath as much.
@@13thStreetGuitars Great video, and beautiful finish! I recently picked up a fretless neck for my Jazz bass, and want to do the same thing. Do you still recommending Fill and Finish Thin over Master Glu Ultra Thin for protecting the neck? I see that the Fill and Finish is described as 'flexible', and wonder if that will have any negative effects holding up to the abuse of round wound strings. I keep thinking these finishes need to be hard and smooth like glass, but I'm not an expert. Thanks!
@@caseycoppi9571 Flexible is better than brittle, I guess. The ultra thin has a lot of solvent in it and as you rub it on, it will eat into the previous layers. Seems like the regular thin doesn't do that as much. It goes on thicker and smoother. (less coats and less sanding)
@@hughzero4 Thank you for that explanation, it makes perfect sense. Appreciate the reply!
hey man, do the shop towels smoke and heat up when you put the glue on em? had this problem earlier
As the glue dries, yes. Do not hold onto them when the glue starts to dry! Toss them in the trash before that. You may not be putting enough glue on the shop towel if it's drying too fast.
@@13thStreetGuitars okay sweet. Good to know. How much should you put on the shop towel? Should I soak it?
@@joldisyri8936 watch the video again to get an idea. I did more coats than are shown.
@@13thStreetGuitars all good bro. I figured it out. I probably did over 10 coats on my ovangkol fingerboard. Enough coats to make it so that there were no more pores from the wood. Going to take it up to 3000 grit tomorrow. Thanks alot for your vid bro
So, I figured it out and I finished it up. Plays great and has a nice shine, but some parts of it finished cloudy rather than clear. Any suggestions on next steps?
How many coats are on this fretboard? Looks absolutely brilliant by the way.
I have a weird method where I do the first coat or two, then sand it back to 400. Then I add 4 or 5 coats and sand it to 800 on the DA. Then a few more coats and go up to 1200. Then buff. You gotta load the corners of the board and feel it out as you go. Thanks for the kind words!
@@13thStreetGuitars Thank you for the tips. Totally appreciate your help. Cheers!!
@@13thStreetGuitars How many bottles of that glue do you need for that many coats?
@@jisakoff Just a portion of one bottle.
@@13thStreetGuitars Thanks. I am probably going to try this soon. The finish looks amazing
