I hated it, I think it's a patronizing mid-brow film that assumes the audience is stupid and hasn't thought about anything in life for more than two seconds.
Also the jokes in the film are rubbish.

Plenty of feminists have come out and attacked this movie for it's thematic framing and confused messaging. I don't think it's a men vs women problem. In fact I would say it's incredibly reductive to pretend thats the problem.

I watched an interview where the director Yorgos Lanthimos explained that he loved using a wide angle that was so wide that it felt constricting because it made the screen into a tiny circle. It’s what Bella is feeling when she goes out and is exploring the whole world and yet is captured and recaptured by these men who want to take advantage of her.
My favorite film of 2023. Achara's insights didn't diappoint.
"I MEAN WITH THE MIND OF A CHILD YOU JUST KEEP INDULGING"
It's not that she had A MIND OF A CHILD at that point. It's that she doesn't understand what the rules of society are. There is no reason why she should understand them. She's had no real experience with them.

At 52:12, Jaby states that he cannot understand how sex work is a liberating experience from a man's perspective. So, as a straight 48 year old man, allow me to share my experience. I was born and raised under a strict religious upbringing by a man who is fanatical in his beliefs. I spent most of the first 24 years of my life with very little human interaction with anyone outside of the religious community; and even inside of the community I was a bit of a loner, never fully understanding or agreeing with the faith I was raised by. I wasn't allowed to date unless it was on the grounds of looking for a marriage partner, and I wasn't allowed to have sex before marriage; and there is absolutely no grounds to allow for divorce. All I wanted from an early age was to have a partner and to have friends, while spending over 20 years pretty much alone, with very little interpersonal communication skills. I fell out of the religion at 24, was disowned by my family and disassociated from the community. Quite literally, I was 24 with the mind of an infant regarding EVERYTHING true to the 'real' world, as all I've known were the teachings and lifestyle of that faith. After two years of reinventing myself and trying to grow out of my shell, I got a job as a bouncer at a strip club; and that opened my mind to a world of sexual experience that I haven't even dreamed of. You have to think, I still went through the natural stages of hormonal puberty in my teens, but was taught to keep it all bottled up - even masturbation was a sin. And now all of a sudden, I'm right in the thick of it. I fell into the swingers community. I applied for an ad in the classifieds to an adult film company; (I got scared due to my inexperience and never followed through, but) because of that I took a job as an escort to try and GAIN some of that experience that I was missing. And I have to agree with this movie's portrayal of events - it was VERY liberating. I wasn't doing it for the money, for the party lifestyle, for drugs, for any of that - I was doing it because I COULD; I was doing it for the experience of LIVING without rules or borders. All of that is years behind me now, and I have Social Anxiety Disorder (unfortunately) as it messed me up to go from one extreme lifestyle into another extreme, albeit the furthest polar opposite extreme - but I don't regret it. It helped me learn how to adapt to a world I never knew or understood; a world that was now my home, for better or for worse. Sometimes the fastest way to grow up is to dive head first into an adult life and experience as much as you can, and then try to learn from those experiences.
Sorry you weren't given the tools to deal with life by the people who should have done the same for you. I kind of have a similar experience, although not quite as extreme on the two ends. (Not quite as secluded, earlier experiences with sex, but not a lot of social interactions. No sex work, but worked in the bar industry and had A LOT of sex in my late 20's early 30's) Sex work or not, it was a sexual awakening for me, and it absolutely was not as healthy of an experience as I could have had if my family just allowed me to live a normal life growing up.
You all did Saltburn, which I finally got to watch your reaction for it like maybe an hour ago, and then this 😂 We appreciate all you do for us 🤣
Also, a lot of people can't get past the concept that she's an "infant in a woman's body" completely forgetting the fact that God even says she's growing at an accelerated rate. They even hint at how quickly she's maturing at the beginning of the film. Max makes note that Bella's hair grows an inch every 2 days. Hair grows 1 in every 2 months, so 1 day to Bella is literally an entire month's worth of growth.
So by the time she's experimenting with herself it's because of puberty. And by the time she's doing stuff with others, she's old enough to be experimenting as she says. She's only an infant for roughly the 1st 5 minutes of the entire film.
People definitely take this film at its surface-level premise and can't get past it quite often, when it really needs to be explored critically. I thoroughly appreciate Achara's ability to get past it, and fully analyze it, beyond that initial premise. Lastly, thank you for writing that this was based on a novel, a lot of people seem to not know that as well. I love how you all actually research things beyond your initial viewing of films, here and on Reel Rejects. And Jaby I always love and appreciate your entertaining reactions as well 🤣

very interesting take, however, one could say the "accelerated maturing" is a plot device used as underhanded way of trying to say that some people mature faster than others at young ages and use that as a means of justifying the unjustifiable
She is absolutely NOT an adolescent when she starts having sex. What adolescents do you know talk like a 5 year old? She was still doing the whole baby voice thing for the first 1/3rd of the movie, so it's not ridiculous for people to assume she still has the mind of a child.

@@conorowens8382 I think that cutting her baby voice a bit earlier in the film would have fixed any issues people might have had with her perceived age. Regardless, like the above OP STATED WITH ACTUAL FACTS, she is growing at an accelerated rate. In 2 days she grows 2 months. So in 2 weeks, she's a year older. All it would take is 3-4 months for her to be of age.

the fisheye and strange angles contribute to the strange uncomfortable feeling along with the strange music and visuals. They’re all there to make you feel uncomfortable almost like Bella is throughout the movie at different times
A lot of the cinematography, include the extreme fisheye, harks back to early cinema in the 1890s and 1900s. In fact for the close ups with the swirly bokeh, they used 19th century Petzval lenses
The scene where they walk and talk by the river is masterfully done. Such a great effect!
The whole trope of "born yesterday" being sexy for SOME men being flipped and exposed in this movie was AWESOME

I love this movie and the themes explored. Emma Stone definitely deserved her Oscar. This movie really gives me pause and made me uncomfortable and then joyous and then supportive of Bella and her choices. Easily one of the best movies made in a very long time.

This was such a fun reaction, love this film so much. It is definitely worth a second viewing to fully take in all the costumes, set design, and the things that are happening in the background.
I likes the movie, but icant shake the feeling that i wished they explored more of the theme, like 1/3 of the movie she was a sex worker i wish they focused on the the stuff she saw earlier like, the inoquality between the rich and poor, the religion aspect, political, and also she wanted to start study they could have had her come across a person with ¨shellshock / ptsd and she feels empathy, i dunno..

The idea of liberation within prostitution in this movie is connected to the emotion of shame. Women were and are often shamed when it comes to sex and lust and experimentation within that ground. Bella is not ashamed of her body, her lust, and is fully aware that selling sex is an occupation where there more than enough buyers. When it comes to sex work the shaming comes from ideas of purity and morality which if you think deeply enough, make no sense when practiced with health precautions.
But if u watch the movie even they show that every man who use s33x work is dirty , discusting and nast . They trying to liberation but that experience give traumatic impact to woman .

It rarely gets pointed out but one of the most hilarious and clever editing choices is when Bella is reading on the deck of the ship and Duncan approaches her, right up in her face. She tells him, unceremoniously, "You are blocking my sun", this happens before the book throwing exchange. Immediately after Bella says this, the camera pulls back to show an ENORMOUS umbrella behind her. Duncan Wedderburn was not blocking her sun. She had exactly as much sun protection as she wanted at that moment. What she really wanted was Duncan Wedderburn the fuck out of her face 😂

It's funny you mentioned Beetlejuice in the beginning because when I first saw this movie, I was like, "This is an AU Victorian, Dr. Seuss-Beetlejuice-Dali aesthetic"
It's very surreal and whimsical.
Children are non judgmental, obsessively curious, want to experience everything and explore , are innocent and they don’t naturally label anything as good or bad. Bella is an adult woman with a CHILDs mind. That is why she behaves the way she does. Once Bella leaves her home and goes out into the world, she is exposed to real life of people, relationships, philosophies, beliefs and books. Bella develops her own set of morals and ideals by treating her experiences an scientific experiment since she was raised by a man who was a scientist and a surgeon.
Emma Stone played the character beautifully.

This is a Top 3 movie for me. Incredible, surreal, beautiful, gruesome. LOVE
What I found most fascinating was how the cities Duncan and Bella visited were so unreal, yet extremely identifiable. London reminded me of London, Paris recalled a dream of Paris, Lisbon was Moorish without ‘being’ Moorish. I truly believe this film will stand the test of time to become a true classic within 25 years time! While I’ll be in my ninth decade of life, perhaps I shall see it come to pass.

I totally needed to watch a deep dive video on the meaning behind the movie and the cinematic choices, after that I can better appreciate it.
Definitely an Oscar worthy performance by Emma Stone. What a fascinating movie. If one has read a lot of science fiction short stories and old timey fairy tales, this movie is actually not that strange as some people seem to find it. I mean yeah there’s a lot of sex, but it’s basically a fairy tale. It kinda reminds me of Shape of Water for that reason.
I also had the Shape of Water comparison. If you haven't read the Poor Things book I highly recommend it. It's really good.
I loved this movie. It's a satire of how men often view women in the harshest possible way.
Emma Stone took home her second Oscar for Best Actress, and it won for Best Makeup, Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design.
I’ve seen this film 3 time at the cinema with two 35mm viewing. This is one of the best films produced in years, and like Saltburn, it’s another queer movie that you cannot just look at it in literal sense. There’s something called ‘absurdity’ and that is in between the lines of ‘reality’ (the truth in out daily lives) and ‘fantasy’ (another set of time to reflect on ourselves rather than to agree to what we are familiar with). This is the ultimate film to ask ‘what if’ and urges us to re-learn ‘normality’ from ‘norms’ which is every bit oppressive to us but we never realise it.
I had the same criticisms as Jaby here but likewise I thought the movie was a masterpiece.

I think Jaby also feels paternal towards bella so he is feeling uncomfortable about her sexual exploration. She does grow up rapidly from child to fully grown woman throughout the movie as her speech changes. It also challenges alot of traditional patriarchal thought process which makes guys question their belief system. I also think Achara equally empathetic towards the men in the movie as Jaby was to bella. As Achara and Jaby also pointed out towards the end
I personally love the take on Bella having the body of a grown up, but the normal brain of a growing child.
Imagine you were reborn into the world with all the knowledge of your past life. The main downside is that you'd be trapped inside a small and frail infant body that can't rapidly grow to match your intellect. You know how to walk, jump, and even run right from the start, but you can't do any of that until your legs and muscles grow to even use them properly. You'd be trapped for YEARS!
But if a child had the body of a fully matured adult, they'd learn at such an insane rate. They'd be able to absorb so much while at the same time quickly be able to put what they know into practice.
I love this movie soooo much!! For me, it's easily a 10/10

Damn I love the gothic genre. This movie encapsulates the genre perfectly. My personal vote for Best Picture.
To be honest as a woman speaking i felt like the movie had a great idea and alot of potential to explore different aspects of being a woman but it failed miserably. I can appreciate the direction, the cinematography and the costumes but i didnt feel liberated by it at all the way some people did. All i saw was the constant sex and the character of a stubborn child in a full grown body. There is so much to a woman then just sex and the movie did not explore the discomfort that we as kids would feel on bad or good touch or how young girls feel about periods. They showed her body adjusting to walk, that would have been interesting to see. The characters are dramatized and once again theres way too much sex to follow through any story. It could be a personality thing but the movie got me very disappointed thats all

Felt like a lot and then storytelling but very little character development because everyone she met was just variants on just two things sex or wealth.
Nah I think this is the perfect difference reaction from male and female . That’s just showing that man and woman look at world differently. And it’s okay to view something from ur perspective, she’s not smarter than him and his not smarter than her they just have different point of view

The writing and dialog is really good. It reminds me of Quentin Tarantino's writing style.
The part of the movie that was difficult to believe was Bella eloping with Mark Ruffalo to be sexually awakened...

- also see Institut Benjamenta, from Brothers Quay, for similar cinematic approach to a Surrealist Fairytale - I also thought of Rousseau's Emile - this vision of childhood as the reference point for what's natural and healthy, and civilization being called upon to justify itself for the Bonsai adjustments it makes to our souls as we "mature"
- the Surrealism is how insane our adult world looks to a spiritually "purer" mind - in fact, another film this made me think of is The Truman Show, with Bella as Truman - exciting how both of you picked up on the universal implications of this Journey

The weird camera angles, in part, was to keep the viewer always off-balance... to avoid letting you ever get comfortable, which, yeah, can be uncomfortable. It's not an easy watch and while whimsical, not light.

I loved the movie for it's art. But I don't know why going crazy with sex with multiple people very frequently without any connection is considered as freedom for any gender ? How much more scientific evidence we need ? It's not freedom It's our mind tricking us to have limitless unhealthy pleasure. It's same as having too much sugar, junk food or soft drinks. It's fun , looks like freedom. But it's not. It corrupts our brain , makes us emotionally confused and lack of attention, focus and stability in life. Very few people can handle this life style , But those are very extreme cases , exceptions I would say, Those people have very different goals and focus in life. Most of us who think we can handle it , we can't. We end up in loop of suffering of our compulsions that we like to call freedom.

I almost think it might have been funnier to put the general's brain into the goat's body. So he would've had to live the rest of his conscious life as a damn goat, climbing dumb shit like rooves and telephone poles, bleeting at random occasions such as the wind or Tuesday, always being hungry and feeling no shame in licking the inside of a dirty diaper.

The parallel of this movie with barbie is so cool to find! It’s basically a women story finding their footing in the man-ruled world. How she was put in a box, how there’s a man who wants her attention, and there are so much more.

Sex Work is empowering because men believe to be the owners of women sexuality, that's what marriage is for. And so, to choose to have sex in exchange for money, means no man can claim her sexuality. They have have sex with her, but she will never be trulu theirs, and in turn she is producing her own income which at least in this case, allows her full emancipation from men.
Is it music outside this movie?
Hard to tell. The composer made an album and I listened to it. It was truly fascinating but eventually I had to turn it off because it was too difficult to listen to.
He is clearly a genius, but I guess it is best when he makes soundtracks to artistic movies.
I don't know ... all I see is Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" meets surrealism meets some kind of feminism. Nothing about it is new. But mix everything together and add a few graphic scenes and - et voilà - everyone is thrilled.
BTW: Science assumes that midwifery is the much older profession.
I - as a woman - do not see sex work as liberating. Rather, the idea that women like sex, want sex, take the initiative and do whatever they want with their bodies is a liberation from old images, if you will. Doesn't have to mean prostitution.
On the other hand, women who sell their bodies deserve respect like everyone else. Respect for a person should not depend on the length of a skirt.

Giving me a little bit Wes Anderson vibe but it's not a Wes Anderson movie...
This movie was entertaining for sure and see why Emma Stone won best actress but I didn't really connect to it. This movie also isn't for everybody, there was only 5-6 people in the theater when I watched it and I was the only one laughing during the whore house scenes, it was awkward.

For me this movie is less than the sum of its parts. Great acting, great set design, funny dialogue and fascinating themes. Unfortunately i dont think they come together in a cohesive fashion. The pacing is a bit of a problem, and the themes about emancipation are muddied with wierd plot points.
