“Between Shades of Gray” is my all time favorite book and quickly made Ruta Sepetys a favorite author. It’s a touching story and I learned so much from it.
I’m new to your channel and I’m so happy to find someone who enjoy the same book genres as I. I am looking forward to more of your perspective. Thank you
Pachinko is also on my and I am still months out from listening The Secret Book of Flora Lea through my library. ;) Shadow of the Wind is also a must read for me this year. I think it is going to be a good reading year!
I really love how you read and talk about books that aren't new releases. I also want to read Pachinko and a chunky classic I want to get to is Anna Karenina.
The Echo of Old Books is available in Canada. I read it this past year. It was ok. Great premise, I just don't think the story really followed through with that premise. I also just don't get the hype over Kristen Hannah. I've tried a few of her books and she is just not an author for me. On the other hand, I loved The Secret Book of Flora Lea. I purchased it and I will re-read it at some point. I recently read The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese. It's meaty (over 700 pages) but so, so good. An historical (fiction) narrative of 3 generations of family in India. Truly one of the best books I've read in a long time.
Interesting about Echo of Old Books, yeah, you never can tell with the hyped new books whether or not they'll be good. For me Kristen Hannah requires a certain mood. I can understand why people like her, but she definitely usually writes pop fiction/soap operas, and you have to know that going in. I am waiting for the Covenant of Water to come up at my library. I think the last time I checked I have about a month to wait. I am looking forward to reading it!! I am glad you liked the Secret Book of Flora Lea; I am looking forward to that one, as well.
I have not read any Kristen Hannah but i have The Woman on my tbr as well :) I am SO EXCITED you are going to Signature of all things, i absolutely LOVED that book and i never really see anybody reading it. I have always wanted to read Shogun, if you want company let me know!
I am about 50 pages into The Signature of All Things and am loving it so far. I absolutely love Elizabeth Gilbert and loved City of Girls and Big Magic, so I am excited to see where The Signature of All Things goes. I'll let you know when I pick up Shogun, but it will probably be later in the year. I want to finish Les Miserables first, and after that I may need a break from giant epics for a bit, lol.
My sister Kate and her husband Peter flew the entire family to Paris for Christmas in 1990. It was a great time until mid-flight when I realized we had left my nephew Kevin behind at the house. He is a resourceful lad, and I knew that him being home alone for a while would be a good character building experience for him. Eventually, my sister was able to fly back and we all returned early to celebrate Christmas back at her house.
❤📚 A great lineup! I have Between Shades of Gray, The Kite Runner, and A Thousand Splendid Suns on my shelves. It would be great if I could get to them this year as well.
May I make one more recommendation? I think you mentioned that you enjoy Olympic sports, so have you read The Boys in the Boat? My husband and I are reading this together and saw the movie today. It is an inspiring story and I hope many others will pick up the book and watch the movie.
Shogun is fabulously written. One a of my favorite books of all time. Enjoy!
Thanks for the input!!

Thanks for the recommendation! I have it on hold on Libby, so I'm really looking forward to it.
Pachinko is great. You learn a lot about the how the Japanese felt about Koreans. The Echo of Old Books is also good.
Yes, I enjoyed Pachinko. I especially enjoyed learning about Korean history as it relates to Japan, as you say :)

Yes, I'm wondering if I should just use an Audible credit for the Secret Book of Flora Lea, lol.

The Signature of All Things is my favorite book!!!! The audiobook is fantastic.
I read a paper copy from the library. It was a lot of fun!
