What is Strabismus Surgery?

  • Strabismus is a condition that causes the eyes to look in different directions. Learn how our Pediatric Ophthalmology Center treats eye conditions including strabismus: www.childrenscolorado.org/doc...
    Strabismus is caused by a lack of coordination between the eyes and they become misaligned as a result. In children, this misalignment can cause the brain to favor one eye over the other. If this continues, the eye that the brain ignores will begin to lose its ability to see. This loss of vision is called amblyopia, and it is frequently associated with strabismus. Fortunately, doctors have developed a surgical technique that can correct strabismus. Watch the video to learn about the different forms of the strabismus and how we treat them.

    I had strabismus in my left eye since I was little and left untreated due to financial problem and lack of resources, and now I'm 22, it bothers me because I can't even have an eye to eye contact with other people and can't properly socialize because of bullying. watching this video gives me hope that one day my eye will be corrected.

    I've had this surgery - I slept a lot in the first few days because its just too annoying or painful to keep your eyes open. It basically felt like I had largr grains of sand in my eyes constantly. After the initial few days I started opening and using my eyes more and things soon went back to normal. It greatly reduced my chronic migraines which I had derived from my eyes constantly slouching out of position. Don't be afraid, it'll all be fine. ♡

    My surgery is in July. I'm so excited. I'm tired of cruel people bullying me because of my eyes. Some people like it and think it's cute but I feel once I started to get uncomfortable and not confident and it's started to cause issues with my daily activities that's when I decided to do something about it. May God be with us all who have this issue and are or would like to get it corrected. Our confidence will rise for us personally. 🙏🏾 I wasn't born with it so Doc said you can wake up one day and your brain can just decide it doesn't want to support your eye muscles anymore and that will suddenly happen. I can also happen through traumatic situations or even an injury to the head or something. People are so cruel, they don't know how this stuff can happen to them tomorrow. Stay strong, we are definitely favored and beautiful ❤

      It's sad to hear that. but it's fact because I'm the one who experienced it too, got bullied at elementary school but it's not bother me at all then my parents took me to the hospital because of my nearsightedness, HHhhh yes, they took me to the hospital not because of crossed eyes(Strabismus) but because of my nearsightedness and finally got treatment and surgery(for Strabismus). After the surgery, my eyes were normal for a while, maybe 1-3 years, then in the last 2 years the strabismus returned. Now I know that the cause of my strabismus is not because of an eye muscle but because the brain has adapted to Strabismus... I don't need surgery but therapy now, even my brain has accepted the strabismus 😢

I started to require glasses again at 28 and now , 40, even with glasses I have a tendency to close one eye, and will be having further surgery soon. But the surgery then definitely did an excellent job and changed my prospects and I’m thankful. And that was decades ago!!! Modern surgery isn’t even a worry. So I've had this surgery done twice on me once when I was in 2nd grade the other in 4th. So I had what you call Extropia which is a type of Strabismus meaning my eye would drift outward randomly. But now after the surgery it pretty much went away like I've grown out of it, I mean I can still do it but on control it rarely happens on its own, and if it does happen it's usually only when I'm staring into space or super relaxed but other than that I've got it under control and it's just nice to see a video about it.

      I have a question. I suspect my 4 year old daughter has it. Also Extropia. I see it happening to her when she stares into space like yours or super relaxed. When she focuses on one thing I see that her eyes align like normal. I tried asking her if the eye who goes outward is painful. She said yes. I was surprised by this. I'll schedule her a pediatric visit soon and then an opthalmologist. I just want to ask from someone who has it same as her--how did you feel when you had this? Was it super painful? Did you have headaches?

    I had this surgery when I was four. I remember that I didn't feel pain at all due to the fact that I was given what i think was pretty potent pain medication but for the first 24hrs post surgery, I had gauze covering both my eyes. For the first few days, my vision was blurry and i used to have eye drops that I took for quite a while. I remember I cried a lot when it was time to put some on, and witnessed many kids do so as well. I still require glasses and yearly clinic visits to my ophthalmologist to check my eye muscle strength (also I have a nightly routine that exercises these muscles as to prevent me requiring surgery again).

    I have esotropia strimbismus and have had this for a year now. I'm 52 years old and have no family history of it being hereditary. I can't get a complete answer as what health issues led to me having esotropia strimbismus. My main hobby is slowpitch softball mens league. I've been playing 36 years until end of May last year 2023. I'm unable to field a moving ball coming right at me as it being a rountine ground ball or a line drive as I see side by side ( double vision). The ophthalmologist I saw in June of 2023 referred me to a neuro opthalmologist and after my examination, I was told that prism glasses wouldn't correct my double vision as my eyes have a mechanical issue and surgery will be needed for my eyes. I really hope this surgery will correct my double vision and I just might be able to put in a few games this year but won't happen until we're into mid to late fall season which lasts till 3rd week of November as my surgery will happen on the 1st or 2nd week of July.😂

So why do i still need another surgery after 4 others? That, I dont know. I never did my exercises correctly though, so im sure that affected it. Nobody really bullied me, but i always got weird looks and not everybody always talked to me, although i still had a lot of friends. My eyes are not so bad now. Close up you can almost not tell at all, but from far away its painfuly obvious as my right eye never follows my left. I have blurry vision on my right eye, therefore im also getting a laser treatment for it soon. Even in school, there was an eye test done by professionals in order to detect students with poor eyesight and get them to have help right away, and from 10 letters, i read 10 with my left and 1 (even that barely) with my right. My classmates were really confused, and even then a girl asked me with which one i couldnt see well, then said it was obvious. That did hurt my feelings a bit, but ive started to accept the fact that I also might never change. Ive gotten used to it now, but i also cant stop pursuing my mother to do the surgery and laser as fast as possible. I just hope everything goes well.

My left eye lost its sight. Is it because of the surgery I had? Or is it because it takes me a years to see a doctor to treat my cataract? Or does the cataract is the reason why I have strabismus today?

    I had this surgery when I was a baby, think I was 1 or 1 1/2. Still have a mild wandering eye(it’s kinda like lazy eye, but mine will fix itself after a minute or so), but only when I don’t wear my glasses. Have had to wear glasses since 2 but have gotten way better since I was younger and doctors say I may not need them at some point in my life. Honestly the idea of not wearing glasses is strange, foreign to me, and a little uncomfortable. When you’ve gone your entire life without glasses seeing your face without them other than for bathing, sleep, etc can feel really unnatural. It feels like looking at a different person tbh..

      I had both eyes corrected in the fifth grade. No, I don’t remember it being painful after. You just have to put drops in your eyes for several weeks after like the video says. I was lucky I had a really good surgeon. What they don’t tell you, and I guess it’s a good thing, is that they take your eyeball out to perform the surgery. 😂

    • @aguy7726
      @aguy7726 Před 3 lety +1

      Eh it’s probably not that risky, assuming it sounds so common. But I don’t like hearing the side effects, even if the chances of them happening are low. “Infection, Blindness, etc etc”
      I think I might have strabismus. My eye sometimes drifts to the left, and becomes irritated/bothers me. It also becomes a bit harder to focus on an object. What I notice is it happens when I’m tired or stress a lot, and a quick way to relieve the bothering feeling in my eye is to patch my other eye with my hand, and force that eye that bothers me, to see alone. Then the bothering pain (it’s not really pain, it’s more like a burning/pain sensation. Like it’s sore or something) kind of goes away
      You feel me?? Should I get checked with the eye doctor or not??
      I don’t want the surgery

      @touchdafishy Před 3 lety +2
