Crazy how soft pure gold is, that ring would bend and lose shape so easily. Aside from being cheaper and stretching the gold further, that's why allot of jewelry is made out of 14k gold. Even 18k is quiet a bit harder then 24k.

As much as I love gold, I wouldn't want a 24k _anything_ really. At least nothing I would actually wear -- it's way too soft. 24k gets scuffed and dented just by looking at it funny, let alone normal use. That's why 18k is the standard for rings, watches, chains, etc.
Wearing 23k (96.5%) necklace, but i always make sure to pick one of the smallest of each size since my first necklace broke on the first day i had it. Now i wear 3 baht, but it looks like 1 baht. Never take it off, even while doing heavy lifting in the gym

I'm not a jeweler but I am a watchmaker, and I fix dented, scratched gold watches all the time: The higher the purity the worse and more widespread the damage due to its softness. Unless high-karat or pure jewelry is made very thick and chunky too, it can easily bend or deform... A friend had his 23k wedding band deform just from a couple years of weightlifting, and it wasn't thin at all. Still the pressure of his grip around the bar caused the ring to eventually flatten out on one 'side'. The last thing you want is pure gold for anything on around your hands, but chains and earrings are usually ok.
Silver has the same problem of extreme softness, and that's why the standard for jewelry is Sterling (92%) instead of pure.
