  • I actually can't believe I wasn't aware of angle viewfinders for SLR and DSLR cameras. I can already tell they are going to change my life. Here I show my new (to me) angle viewfinder for my Olympus OM1-N and tell you why it might just be the best camera accessory you never knew you needed.
    As I mention in the video, these types of viewfinders are available for a wide range of standard format SLR-type cameras (including digital). Below I've listed some eBay searches for some common camera models I've found.
    UPDATE
    The verdict is stil out for the capatibility of the viewfinder shown in the video with OM-D cameras. I have found a newer model angle finder for use with the OM-D E-1 and E300 cameras (as well as some adapters) but unfortunately I am still unsure if these work. if you've used an angle finder with an OM-D camera please share your experience in the comments.

    Hey Adam. I've wanted a right-angle finder for three decades, but couldn't justify the cost for its occasional use. Recently, I got a great deal on a top-notch copy stand, so again, the lust blooms. Of course, a mirrorless body is in my future, but find no justification due to the continued, flawless reliability of my 2014 Nikon D810. So, a strong maybe. Oh, and glad to see your subscriber count rising. Well-deserved. You bring a unique wisdom along with uncommon subject matter. For example I love your occasional shoots out in the woods with a view camera. Almost an immersive experience. Happy spring to you.

      Hey Eric, as always I truly appreciate your comments on my videos. It might sound disingenuous but I would prefer to have a modest, dedicated following of folks who actually interact with me (as you do here) and share their own experiences than to have a massive following of faceless names posting generic comments. I agree with your assessment of the D810 btw. It's an absolute beast even by todays standards. If I'm not mistaken it also has the same sensor as the original Sony A7R mirrorless cameras.

    Very cool, I didn't know they existed for 35mm either. I had to go the other direction and get prisms for my Hasselblad because waist level finders aren't great for portraits or tripod work where I need to be shooting down from a higher position. Congratulations on the subscriber milestone, your channel is well done and deserving of much more growth. Cheers!

      Hey thanks a lot for the kind words! I really appreciate it. Yeah like I said in the video this was one of those things that really did make me think "how have I never encountered this?" Oh well, glad I have now ha

    NEW sub from Italy, just bought the Nikon dr-5 5 minutes before watching this video. I do many low shots so it will be a back saver because i'm old. Also for focusing more precisely with my failing eyesight.

      Welcome! Glad to have you here and hopefully the viewfinder for your Nikon works out for you. Ironically, I've sold my entire Olympus kit since this episode. I sort of miss it honestly.

    Thanks Adam! I'm ordering one for my Praktica. If only it inverted the image, it would be as convenient to use as my Rolleicord and Speed Graphic. By the way, I'm hoping to shoot my first cyanotypes on kozo paper using your mesh screen method, likely with a pvc washing tube next month. I think Steve Onions last name is pronounced "Oh-nee-ahns".

      Haha thanks, Gordon! I almost contacted Steve just to ask how to pronounce his name but now that I see it typed out I believe you're likely correct. Very cool about your Praktica btw. Which model do you have? And even more cool to hear about your venture into cyanotypes! I'd be extremely curious to hear how your experience goes especially since it will be on washi.

      @@AdamWelch I've got the MTL3. I'll post the washi results on my Flickr account, once i figure out how to make a cyanotype scan look like the cyanotype. Which hasn't worked well so far.

      @@Kitsaplorax Same for me and my cyano prints. Generally they are just too big for the scanner. Best of luck btw. I'm actually about to try some cyanotypes on glass very soon which I'm sure will be a whole new can of worms.

    I have a question when I put on the right angle finder it shows like opposite, how can we fix that?

    • @AdamWelch
      @AdamWelch  Před 2 měsíci

      Unfortunately, the reversal you are witnessing is an optical effect which is inherent with these viewfinders and other non-prismatic SLR viewfinder systems. It it helps at all, you WILL get used to it with practice.

    I've been looking for a product like this! Can you explain though why it won't work on any camera? Eye cups can be generic so I'm unsure why this wouldn't be either....

    • @AdamWelch
      @AdamWelch  Před rokem

      The big reason is that, as far as I know, there aren't truly 100% universal eye cups available. There are likely generic Canon or Nikon (depending on the camera type) for instance however. A first hand example from my experience would be my Nikon F3 HP, which requires screw-in cups and viewfinder accessories whereas the Olympus has the slide on type. Same for a rubber eyecup from my Canon AE-1 Program, that wouldn't interchange with the OM-1n either.

    • @heroaomedia
      @heroaomedia Před rokem

      @@AdamWelch ahhh thank you for explaining. Unfortunately there aren't options for Lumix cameras for any model. Might have to look into 3d printing something that allows me to attach it. Cheers!

  • @dubsnapper4787

    Nice video, does the finder break down to its component parts or is it a one piece arrangement, I need to use the OM eyecup 1 which allows the use of dioptre correction lenses,

    • @AdamWelch
      @AdamWelch  Před 10 měsíci

      I've since sold my entire Olympus kit but from memory I don't think the angle finder disassembles. However, it does allow for focusing of the finder itself so really that might negate the need for your adjustable diopter altogether.

    • @dubsnapper4787
      @dubsnapper4787 Před 10 měsíci +1

      It would indeed but I would be nervous of it getting damaged when out & about taking pics, I've since discovered that the Nikon DK-20C eyepiece fits the OM series cameras & they aren't as rare. @@AdamWelch

    • @AdamWelch
      @AdamWelch  Před 10 měsíci

      Interesting to know about the Nikon cup fitting. I'm curootehat you mean about it possibly being damaged though? Are you talking about the eye cup that is build into the angle finder?

    • @dubsnapper4787
      @dubsnapper4787 Před 10 měsíci

      For clarity- I have the OM eyecup 1 which accepts the round dioptre lenses but can't source the correct +2 dioptre, the Nikon version comes with the dioptre built in & it fits OM cameras, I actually sourced an OM Varimagni finder locally in Ireland today for €20 incl leather case,....happy days @@AdamWelch
