  • Meet Bamse, the world's smallest campervan (maybe)! This 1000cc, 40(ish?) horsepower 1989 Suzuki Super Carry is my crazy miniature campervan conversion, and I've used it to tour all over the Scottish Highlands & Islands.

    What a lovely young man. I’m in my 70’s and have very happy memories of a 1970’s VW camper van I had for a while in my 50’s. I often wish I still had it, so I fully understand how difficult it is to let something like that go. I sold mine to a young couple who were planning an adventure to the wilds of the west coast (in Canada). I’m sure it went on to provide them much happiness as well. I hope the same for your van. Thanks for bringing back such wonderful memories.

      Agree fully - I sold my beloved 1991 Delica L200 which I had invested much time and love to build up the way I wished. Sold it to a lovely couple who just graduated University and wanted a rig they could live out of as they did their windsurfing trip down to the Baja prior to settling down and getting "real jobs" - they sent me photos for the next 2 years of their adventures living out of the van. It was so fantastic to see them following through on their dream using the vehicle I had kitted out and this video also brings back many good memories!

    I used to work for a company attaching billboards, and the company always had some old cars for the folks who didn´t had their own cars. So one day they came up with this Suzuki. We all were laughing like "This is a toy, not a car to work with." But we were wrong. Everything fitted into that van, even the the biggest fellow worker and the largest ladder. Just a matter of using the room thoughtful.

    I see a van with a PSP as the entertainment system along with UMD movies and games, I have to give it respect. As someone with 3 PSPs, almost 300 UMD movies, and almost 400 games, I absolutely love it when the PSP gets love, especially since I use it as a wonderful entertainment setup whenever I travel. My travel bag always has a PSP or two and some UMD movies in it. Can't travel without it.

    I usually wouldnt watch a 44 minute video on a camper van - time and work (I have a full time job, and am part-time postgrad student), but this was very enjoyable to watch. Having a Mazda Bongo myself, the tour of your Suzuki was incredble it being a much smaller camper. The level of engineering gone into such a small van to make it into a very practical camper is amazing. I think your video skills and narrative are simply brilliant, theres no unecessary music, just you telling a fantastic story about your amazing camper van. I really empthaise with your 'letting things go' statement as well, my other hobby is amateur radio, and I had a number of older radios, that ment alot to me being the firsts one I had, but I needed to solidfy and simplify my setup, and as much as I wanted to 'keep' the memorys, it was time to pass them onto another good home, rather than the compliexties of operating and maintaing older equipment (which I think is your point about your lovely van, it takes love to keep it going !). Apologies for the really long comment, but this was a brilliant video and cannot thank you enough. I wish you and your family well. Kind Regards, Al.ze.

      I've long suspected that most down votes are unintentional due to the awkward location of the "thumb's down" icon near the center of the screen and the lack of a subsequent confirmation step. I believe many of them are just folks trying to scroll down on handheld devices and tapping that icon inadvertently. The fact that CZcams removed the display of downvotes stats some while back rather bears that hunch out. It seemed most every video, no matter how inoffensive, was racking up about 1% of views as downvotes almost uniformly--which just says "margin of error" to me.

Then over the next 10 months, i drove 25,000km going to Alice Springs, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, & finally sold it in Brisbane! Some scary moments when being overtaken by road trains, & we would have come off second best if we'd hit a kangeroo! The motor never missed a beat, but i can confirm what Calum said about the heat rising from the engine ( 45C outside - much warmer inside!) Happy Days!!

    Loved everything from this video, the van itself, the story about the Rascal/Carry and your brief account of the island of Raasay, the clean electrical system, the rest of your collection, the crisp shots, how you show every detail from the plugs to the choke to the passthru, your humour hahaha , the fact that you have a PSP 3000 mounted to the dash, that you use a modded iPod Classic for music, its time as a Suzuki Marry, its name, the story about letting it go. It is now July 2023. Thank you, Calum, for a thoroughly enjoyable episode about your former campervan. You brought back memories for me of building the interior for my first pick up truck camper (1968) and building the interior for my window van conversion (1972), which was a never finished project until the gasoline (petrol) crisis pushed me out of in favor of a Honda Civic. I agree, the design ideas were thoroughly worked out, and you built upon them with your own creativity. I wish I had photos of my projects, but so far, I still have vivid memories. All the best.

    Wow absolutely enjoyed every second of this video which I found randomly. What a fantastic little camper. I drove one of these vans many years ago for a friend who had a florist shop and is occasionally deliver the flowers. I’d never recommend driving one of these at 80mph 😂. Great video and I had to subscribe 👍👍👍

    Having one of those tiny, preferably self-built campers, is a dream of mine that I'll hopefully fulfil one day. I love the idea of having a self-reliant tiny mobile home.
    Now it may be too late for this camper to ask, but would a larger 4G antenna maybe helped with the connection problems?
    And what about maybe adding a solar panel to recharge the battery on the go?

    I've been studying van designs and my main concern is that on my islands, roads are a lot narrower, hence big, full-sized vans won't work. You've just answered a great big question--a van this small could actually work. Plus I was pleasantly surprised at how well you presented this van--you're a natural at this, arencha'??? That and the van made me subscribe.
    PS> How much you want for the van? ;)

    • @CalumRaasay
      @CalumRaasay  Před 2 lety

      Exactly! You can get by with motorhomes and the like but they just become a burden. Plus much easier to find a place to camp in one of these! The NV200 is the perfect van for that sort of island & highland travel, imo. As for the van, I've still got her! I've not activley put her up for sale so she's still sitting safe, there's a few folks interested- If you want her I'd be happy to chat, the big issue for everyone is more getting her - you'll need a trailer as she isn't road registered! feel free to email me - calumraasay (at) gmail.com
