I understand the bit about putting the passport face down but what direction should your face be put down? Should your face in the passport be facing up or down?

Yes. In the fall of 2019 citizens of seven additional countries including the US can use them.

@@beyondthestars4299 No idea. That's up to the UK government. It will be nice not have to stand in a 2 hour queue next time I fly into Heathrow.
