  • I give a step by step fly tying instruction for my Jerk Jr. Baitfish pattern. The fly is roughly 4" long and is designed to cut though the water, creating a jerk bait style action. The Jerk Jr. is an exalent smallmouth bass pattern as well as other warm water, and saltwater species.

    Hi Gunnar, all you ties are works of art, but this one is more my speed. I like the "random" color combo, nice for steelies and in some waters walleye too. I would probably tie shad colors or perch/fire tiger more often. You really have your designs down to a science. I saw a vertical head design along time ago I think it was called a feather head by the author. He made his own "Softex" type of coating with a thinned shoe glue and applied it to a soft hackle collar on his streamer before and after attaching the eyes. The hackle was flattened on a vertical plane and a strip of freezer bag clamped on the fly with a spring clothes pin to cure. overnight. I know this is pretty old school but those clothes pins are excellent tools especially if you're a production tyer. The design was similar in concept to yours in that he supported his marabou underwing with stiffer hair and sandwiched it with a hackle wing. Anyway he was an excellent tyer and educator and I think you are on the same path. I enjoy watching and listening to your channel. I like your new production room, and your sense of humor also. (subtle plug on the bottom of the cookie 😉) God bless ya, many years of success.

      Not sure why I just read this for the first time today, but thank you Joe! I really appreciate it man. I'm not sure if I have anything down to a science, just trail and error, and a lot of stubbornness ;)

    Have you fished that color combo yet? I know from working in the fishing dept at Cabela's that is one of the BEST color combos for walleye and I am sure big trout, smallies and pike would crush it too.

    How can you use the tear mender to glue on eyes and make a bulk head?? For an EP brush head I used to use liquid super glue and let it soak in the fiber making it dense and hard but I’d rather use the tear mender so how can I do that?? Thanks

    Awfully late to the party, but I find that the dubbing head quickly fades away as I catch fish. Any tips to make it more secure when tying? Thanks!

    Hey Gunnar, Love the fly. I am wondering, doesn't the application of the UV resin take away the mobility of the eyes that the tear mender gave them? I know UV makes the fly much more durable and it will definitely make it last many more fish. I just though because you explained the tear mender "movement" so the eyes didn't come off, it seemed as though it was a good thing to have the eyes move for more realism. Just me, long winded question.
    All the best, Sean

      Hey Sean, although the Tear Mender is mobile, the mobility wasn't necessarily intended for realism. The application of the tear mender allows the eyes to deform elastically while remaining attached to one another, thus absorbing the shock and shear stresses imparted to the eyes during a strike. You are certainly correct that a UV resin would take away from the elastic property of the tear mender, which is why I use a product from Deer Creek called UV Diamond Fine Flex. It is a Flexible resin that would move and deform with the tear mender, again absorbing shock instead of cracking and failing.

      Thanks, I just got that Deer creek flex but haven't had much chance to use it yet. Thanks for taking the time to explain. Sean

      Thanks you Ernie! I throw it on anything from 5wt to 8wt. It's fairly light weight, and doesn't hold much water. A 5wt. might be a little light, but certainly still doable.

    does this style of fly sink well on a floating line or do you need to use a sinking line?

    • @Gunnar_Brammer
      @Gunnar_Brammer  Před 7 lety

      I wouldn't say it "sinks" necessarily. When fished on a floating line it will most certainly fish sub-surface, and because of the heavy gauge wire on the hook it will fish as soon as it hits the water, but if you are looking to get it down 3-4 ft or even deeper for still water presentations a sinking line is necessary. Although the fly could easily be adapted to sink faster on a floating line set up if you were to weight it belly scratcher style (fly fish food), but it would dampen the jerk action.
