A friend of mine gave me a 1995 era Craftsman mechanic's tool set that was his father's. It had the round head, non-quick release ratchets and my friend said, "I never liked these, so here, take them". The set was 95% complete and I got any missing pieces off of Ebay.
It's a backup/spare set, but it does the job.

I do not have a way to try every ratchet , But everytime i go in a friends shop i grap ratchets and try them . I think i like 120 tooth for small handled ratchets , Everything else i am still a 72 tooth fan. Most make to much noise and can feel it in the handle . I guess if a noisy ratchet is my biggest complaint then i do not have much to complain about. Thanks for showing

I think we need to take step back and look at the situation a little differently. I own a fair number of old SK tools bought in the early 70's; they have worked well some are over 50 years old. SK has undergone several ownership changes over the years, the last US ownership was under Ideal Industries after SK filed for chapter 11 around 2010.
Ideal Industries couldn't make SK tools profitable either, so the Chinese came in and bought it.
I own a "x" ratchet wrench 15mm USA made, compared it to a China made one and yeah, as you confirmed, it has back drag. But, in using it regularly, the back has decreased and now matches the USA made one. Keep in mind the US 15MM X wrench runs anywhere from 45 to 66 for one wrench, I bought the 7 piece China set for 40.
I own mostly US made tools being in the trade for 40+ years, (tool truck brands, SK, Easco, Williams, and a host of othets). I might buy this 1/4 ratchet and for regular usage and see how it performs.
Quality knows no country of origin...

Oh i loved old SK tools myself!! i had the X-Frame ratchets,i was sour from the get go because i paid good money for what was advertised as USA stock, and the sae set had the 3/8,and 5/8 wrenches made in china!!!the other wrenches were USA made!! i paid like $200 for them the china set was 40$ then one wrench locked up!! i ended up giving the set away!!! to be fair ill use this ratchet for a good amount of time and do a follow up video!! if dont give it away!! thanks for sharing your experence with the brand!!

I believe you may be a little bit psychic or something, Jeff. I was just looking at those and contemplating ordering one to try. It's about the 3rd time that's happened. That may be one of the few tools made in China that is actually good. They are very far and few in between, but they do exist. I just haven't seen enough reviews on them yet. The 6-pawl design had me curious if they perform similar to the USA line. I used to be a big fan of SK until they sent a big chunk of their manufacturing to China. I'd definitely open it up for some good lube. The Chinese stuff rarely ever has enough from the factory. You should do a video showing the pawls and gear under the backplate.

I started out with 36 tooth ratchets and have used them aplenty in confined spaces. I have modern multi tooth ratchets but I still reach for my old ratchets. I have old 45 tooth New Britain Kilness patent ratchets that feel smoother than a lot of these 90 or more tooth ratchets.
