I remember from an analysis a good theory was that the game represents deep trauma and the use of drugs as an adult or at least older person, we can see that his trauma were with those 3 events, losing his favorite toy the rabbit plush, loosing his soccer ball to a bully, and his dog getting lost in the woods, at the end he never overcame those trauma and in the last scene you can see him laying alone in a room isolated with his head melted representing the use of drugs to escape from reality but ending in those bad memories.

Seems reasonable. I just thought it was weird to make people happy in a weird way, and I felt happy.
Not only that but we can see as the events got worse, in both short term and long term discomfort, the nightmares grew worse

Fun fact: this game was actually pretty surprising because if you didn’t know this game was made by the same studio who made stuff like CHUCHEL which is more known. Or the Samorost series, they make funny and light hearted games so this was pretty surprising and honestly they did a great job for what I think is their first horror game.

Extra edit: so I actually recently just noticed this but in the first level of CHUCHEL if you click on the tv you’ll see this news show, and the news reporter looks just like the kid from happy game. So that’s interesting.
yeah I love Amanita Design! They did have hints of creepiness in their games before so it's cool to see them take this leap. I've yet to play Creaks and im excited to see what they come up with next
@@j897j same. Amanita Design is my favorite indie game studio rn. The environment and puzzles that they created always perfectly hit the nail. They always have these weird but cool concept and I really love them. Can't wait for their next project

(SPOILERS) The ending theoretically could be the perspective of a man with a sad past life and tries to num the pain with drugs that makes him happy, but also slowly killing him. That red entity coming out of the grown boy could be his soul. That smiling demon could be his personality he forces himself with throughout the dreamscape.
That's exactly right !! many people didn't understand that. The character dies of an overdose at the end- he's shown laying on the floor.

Amanita Designcomes up with great stuff, they made one of the first point-n-click games ive ever played called something like "Quest of the Rest"--- and years later I played Machinarium only to realize that they made both games. glad to see them keep on experimenting

What many here see as only a game, for others is more of a biography. For recovering addicts who happen across this game, as I did a while back, it actually is heartwarming to know that the horrors of addiction and its damage to others is being shown for what it is - destruction at its purest form.
I used to escape the terrible and retreat into my "comfort zone" or "happy place", what was once recreational became near required daily just to feel human. If I didn't, then the nightmares would begin and grow significantly worse the longer I waited.
It's the horror of addiction.
To those who said hallucinating drugs - not exactly. It could be any hard drug that would give a psychotic breakdown would cause the visions and "dreams".
This game needs to be more well-known with counselors and people, it can help those who don't understand they need the help to recover.
By the way, 3 years clean and sober and looking forward to more!

**Trigger warning: mention of chronic pain and PTSD/trauma** This game reminds me a lot of what PTSD dreams are like...same themes (i.e. getting something taken away, chasing it, and having it ripped away either right before you can reach it or as soon as you do) but seemingly random and unrealistic images or scenarios. I've dealt with chronic joint pain my entire life with adults dismissing it because i'm "too young" and doctors not finding anything definitively wrong, and as a kid this manifested in my dreams as having my bones (while inside my body) coated in cheese and adults not believing me when i told them about it and it not showing up in x-rays and other medical tests. Seems so incredibly strange and nonsensical, but very very reminiscent of my actual experience. Absolutely love this game!! Shows that that trauma dreams aren't actually necessarily reliving the trauma scene by scene.
seeing this, i got REALLY excited and i wonder if Ryan would ever try his hand at Chuchel or Machinarium, or another Amanita Games title. Especially Chuchel would be interesting, i think.

the developers of this game did a great job making a creepy game but honestly that does not surprise me considering there previous game that i think you should check out especially machinarium.

I love how he gets so extremely immersed inside the game to the point where he is the character.
Thank you so much for playing this Ryan! I really recommend Amanita Design’s other games too, this is the only horror game among them though. I recommend Chuchel, it is basically the opposite of happy game, and it is really funny.
Some people are like "this game is deep" when a guy shoots another guy for a plot-twist betrayal.
These people need to look at this game.

I think this game is saying how this guy lost 3 things that were important to him, and never overcoming it. I think the smiley face represents his trauma he experienced. In the end, when the guy got older, he couldn't handle his trauma anymore and killed himself with drugs. I think drugs because I think the game represents his imagination and going through euphoria from the drugs. Only difference is that the happy land is twisted because of his trauma, and in his last moments before dying, he sees himself with all the things he lost. So I don't think that this was a drug dream, but a hallucination caused by the drug before his death. And the red spirit endicates that even after death, he is still suffering. So in conclusion, the guy never found peace. Even in death.
(I think it's also possible that the guy had some sort of mental disorder, which is why the guy saw the face even before his three traumas.)
This is kinda like looking into how a vengeful or sad spirit is created, the kind in horror media and such. It’s very interesting nonetheless

I always took the ending of this as the game was a dream of a drugged up adult thst never grow up and did drugs to relive simpler times you can see drawings and toys on the floor this gsme doesn't have a happy ending far from it we can only hope he gets the help he so obviously needs
30 mins in and this is the only game I've ever watched ryan play that has genuinely terrified me
i like how ryan post longer, less-edited vids recently. glad to know he's not pushing himself much. i personally prefer vids like this more (although i support all of his vids ofc!)

It's great to see Ryan play this game. Very spooky.
So I'm seeing a lot of people theorizing and guessing that the story is representing an adult using drugs to cope with his trauma, but ends up overdosing (?) What's more dark is that when the scene cuts to the adult laying on the floor with his head melted, did anyone noticed that Ryan got an achievement that's called "Happy End"? That just made the ending more sad. We can even see the adult just laying there with a smile on his face too...

This is one of the few horror games I've ever played that have actually horrified me and there were times watching Ryan play this that I genuinely felt like I couldn't keep watching

When nightmares start to casually invade a nursery rhymes video
it surprisingly makes me sleepy and calm, and somewhat nostalgic
I think that on a fictional level, the key here is something like...
There are two entities.
The first is the smiley face we keep seeing. It's trying to make us sleep, to give us dreams of finding various important objects that we've lost in the past. And in finding these objects, having them, we never want to leave.
Him waking up is simply a dream.
Him laying with a a happy face in an empty room is what he actually looks like.
And the final part where he draws a happy face on the screen is him having a moment of clarity and trying to reach out before he inevitably falls into ignorant bliss once more.
But unfortunately, all he can do is smile.
The second entity is what tries to stop this. An invisible thing. It creates the obstacles in our way and instills fear and dread to make us want to wake up.
Notice how you don't move with the arrow keys or aswd? You move by dragging your character. That's the first entity leading you along and all the interactions we have with the environment is the entity removing the obstacles that the second one has set up to wake us up. It tried to take away the objects and creates traumatic images to do this.
To summarize, there are two entities. The first is trying to put us into a state of ignorant bliss and trap us with happiness, and the other is trying to force us out with fear.
Now who's the second entity?
My guess is either a previous victim of the first one.
Or the main character, trying to wake himself up by replaying an endless cycle of this game, this story, so we quit. And he can finally be free.
Of course, as there's only one ending to this game (so far), that is inevitably going to fail.
