As a new hobbyist, I feel like to learn, you have to make those mistakes. Ive bought "unchecked" rolls, estate lots... awful "graded coins" with all sorts of problems. Every mistake is a step towards learning what to do, and what not to do. These videos are a great resource. Thanks for your time and effort :)

Even the big banks don't seem to have more than a few rolls. And if it's half dollars they might have a few among all the tellers but not even a full roll.
Either that or they don't want me to know they have coins.

Best rolls I ever bought was at a garage sale. Two hand filled penny rolls at the bottom of a catch all box. I paid face and brought them home. It had some decent coins nothing special but while I was happy I felt guilty knowing I just bought someone's collection discarded.

Awesome video Daniel! Every coin collector needs to watch this! I've researched coin rolls and coin wrappers extensively and there really is not much info out there. What I have come across is that the large dollar coin were like you said not in rolls but in bags and for the other coins, window wrappers began around the 1920's and all were crimped by hand-not by machine. The flat tubular wrappers came out around the mid 1940's and were also just hand crimped (closed off at each end by hand, not machine). Crimping machines did not arrive until the early 70's when Brandt patented them due to easier coin handling and demand. There were pretty much only 3 coin handling manufacturing companies out there. They were C.L. Downey (Steel-Strong Tubular), Abbott Coin, and Brandt. So with that said, there does not exist and has never existed any crimped coin rolls earlier than the late 1960's/70's. If somebody's great great grandfather had rolls from the 1940's or 1950's, none of them would be machine crimped but rather be in flat tubular wrappers and crimped on both ends by hand. Keep up the great video! You'll be at 50K subscribers in no time!

I'm an older man like yourself, I'm new to collecting coins. I saw the unsearched rolls on E-Bay. Didn't even think about it. The world doesn't work that way, sorry to say. It's basically a scam. Nothing in life is free, telling me it's unsearched. How naive. It's the same with, let's say baseball cards. One card a PSA10, they want 5k, scroll down a little, same player, same year, same manufacturer, same grade and there asking 15 dollars. Makes you wonder about these people. Discussing.

I saw an eBay listing for rolls of Kennedy half dollars. The seller said unsearched rolls, might be silver in them.
Then I thought to myself that the seller would be able to weigh the rolls and if the weight was off they could determine there was silver in the roll without opening the roll.

So excited to hear you talking about this! Excellent info!! I've been opening and searching rolls for almost 4 decades! ...Since long before ebay or even Webcrawler lol! I love giving guidance on how to spot those authentic vintage rolls! Another take on the rolls is that many people are more coin SAVERS than COLLECTORS, it's a different kind of hoarding and why the rolls exist at all. Good rolls should really represent pocket change and change jar change from the past. Meaning, there should be duds here and there when you find authentic rolls. I agree that there are far too many people being sneaky with the words in the listings and descriptions! Just like you said, read what these listings say, and DON'T say! ...And my advice is always that this is a gamble, the roll hunting. It's not the same as buying graded coins, it is not a stable investment, SO NEVER SPEND MORE THAN YOU CAN AFFORD, please! It's my favorite hobby, it's always fun, and sometimes it's profitable too! Big fan of CoinHELPu, you were one of the first channels I subscribed to!

Thanks Daniel. Very informative. I have thought about buying rolls of wheat pennies but was always a little weary of their ads. I did buy a Lincoln cent grouping from The Coin Vault for $100. The set contained many individual sets such as all the uncirculated "82's P and D, copper and zinc, The 1976 collection, the bicentennials, the '68 to 74 S mints uncirculated, 2017 PD&S enhanced uncirculated, 2021 PD&S Proofs, and the 2022 PD&S Proofs. On top of that, they added 1lb. of uncirculated copper and 2lbs. of wheat pennies. The majority of the uncirculated copper was 1980, 1974, 1973 with a few 1964's. The majority of the wheaties was the "40's and 50's common dates and mints. I probably paid too much but it I didn't think I would be able to get all the uncirculated and proof sets separately. I was a little disappointed with the bagged coins, but I did find a couple of good wheat pennies. BTW...I did happen to find a 2014-S Proof Lincoln cent yesterday while going through a box of pennies.

I used to work as a cashier at a convenience store, and you would not believe the number of silver coins I've counted. I always kept a pocket full of change in my car, so I'd take the silver and replace it with the currency the customer thought it was. It's not stealing, it was going to the bank anyways as a nickle or dime, but I knew they were worth more. Also got a lot of Canadian pennies, they look way too much like ours.

Thank you for a very informative video! Personally I think that coin collecting attracts the most people from opposite ends of the spectrum. And predatory sellers know that newbee coin collectors will buy almost anything if it sounds good. My last two bad purchases: from ebay, a toned set that wasn't even the set in the listing (I was refunded). And at a coin show, from a 'reputable' dealer, a morgan dollar that was cleaned but I didn't catch it until later. It is tricky as a newer collector not to get scammed in the coin game

When I am there I ask if they have any rolls of half dollars . I remember one time somebody turned in the rolls in the blue and white wrapper mint issued and some other rolls of halves. I purchased the 14 or so rolls from thg he teller. In the see searched rolls I found some 64 Kennedy Halves, some 40 percent Kennedy Halves and a few Franklins. Daniel, again you’re pointing out things many of us overlook when buying rolls. We make the assumption that the rolls are as described and in the condition the seller claims.
I wanted certain coins, specifically Morgans and Peace Dollars and was wondering whether the seller hadn’t cherry picked the rolls before sending me the coins I bought. Yes they appeared to be BU, but I’m to new to collecting to know otherwise and the coins looked nice. I like the coins but I don’t know that they weren’t just nice coins that someone like me would be happy with until we got around to hear from you how to be cautious when buying coins and not zeal carry us out to the sea of foolish spending.

I’ve done this mistake when I first started collecting I don’t believe any of these listings on eBay
Now there was this one coin store that I went to and bought a pound at a time of Unsearched world coins and every time I found sliver and really nice coins also really old stuff to but they ended up closing so now I cannot find them anywhere I refuse to get ripped off on eBay again great video

Yeah I broke down and bought an “unsearched” roll of kennedy halves off ebay and of course didn’t get anything good. Lesson learned but I’ll just give them away to the niece and nephews. Thanks for your wisdom sir!

Thank you for this info because I have recently just got into this (was my favorite hobby as a kid but couldnt invest obviously)
My journey so far is that Twice i have asked for rolls from the bank first time 10x quarters and 10x dimes and got like a few bicentennials but really not sure what im looking for besides 1964 or earlier. Second time 10 rolls of pennies nickels dimes and quarters, i guess besides pre 1965 im looking for wheats indians and buffalos. However despite my basic search terms i am sure I wouldve found ebay sooner or later and made a big big mistake. I am so glad i came across this video right at the beginning of my collectoring and i am going to read your article immediately after posting this comment. Especially before spending more than face value at the bank.

I really appreciate your candor Daniel, you tell it like it is and we thank you for that.
It's just something about human nature that makes people want to shoot for the moon.
My buddy (The SOMEBODY has to win Powerball guy) is constantly buying Scratch-off lottery tickets convinced he's going to hit it big.
The same thing motivates people to buy these rolls (Have you rescued a Nigerian Prince in exile lately) GREED I believe it's called.
On BOTH the BUYER and SELLER's part.
The seller by offering clearly NOT un-searched material and the buyer by wanting to get something for nothing/below cost.
    How's that saying go?
"We may not always get what we want, but we ALWAYS get what we DESERVE"

So many "unsearched" rolls on eBay. My favorite listing on eBay is people are selling unsearched rolls of half dollar they just picked up at the bank. Listed as Silver found in other rolls possible silver in this roll too. They sell for $15 and up per roll.
