VaYera | Erev Shabbat: And He Appeared

- Join us for our Erev Shabbat service we will be going through the weekly teachings from Monte Judah. This portion describes how the LORD, in the form of three persons, came to the Oaks of Mamre to have lunch with Abraham. While at this lunch, the LORD announced that Abraham and Sarah would have a son. Sarah, who was within hearing distance, laughed. The LORD confronted Sarah about laughing, which she denied. A year later Abraham and Sarah did have a son, just as the LORD said, and they named him Isaac (Yitzach), which means “he laughs.” The remainder of this portion describes the judgment upon Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham’s trip to King Abimelech, Hagar and Ishmael being sent away, and finally the binding (“Akedah”) of Isaac. Abraham’s promise of the Lamb of God is given to us here, “God will provide for Himself the Lamb...” [in that place].

I completely agree with you Monte regarding the meat and milk commandment in the bible, i do not think that it shoulf be taken literally. I believe that it speaks to compassion and respect of life, even those that we use for food.🙏🏽

A few verses earlier Abraham laughed too, but we usually only hear about her laughing.
Interesting view on Sarah's reaction. I believe she laughed sceptically in disbelief, which is why she denied it. Why deny laughing in joy, which would indicate belief? Sarah showed herself to be very human and relateable.
