Hospitals approach “critical point” as millions wait for routine treatment - BBC News

- The damage being done to many hospital services in England by the coronavirus pandemic is revealed in new NHS figures.
More than 4 million patients are now waiting for routine surgery and treatments, nearly half of whom have been waiting for longer than 18 weeks, the official maximum target.
Meanwhile more than 110,000 people in England have been waiting for treatment for more than a year.
Doctors and patients' groups are warning that a second wave of the pandemic, especially during the winter months, could make things even worse. Hospital admission for Covid have doubled in the past two weeks.
The health minister Nadine Dorries has warned that within 10 days hospitals in England could be at a “critical” point.
Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by health editor Hugh Pym and health correspondent Lauren Moss.

Tomakak Ah yes back then when the poor were sent to workhouses, medicine was basic, hell of a lot of child deaths, domestic abuse was rampant, less clean water so we drank more ale, syphilis, other diseases, no worker rights, kids working in unsafe environments, many families to a house, pollution from coal trains. If you were gay, lesbian, bi/pan you never dare speak out, executions (which are not a good crime deterrant, Yeah, far superior right?
We also took what we liked from countries we invaded all in the name of an "Empire". We were terrible. Hence why there was less immigration (however we still had them). Our country is built on the blood and sweat of the poor and badly treated. If you're working class, well back then life was shit for the working class. The hospital my brother in law works in is empty but they had a sign outside recently telling people that they were full of Covid 19 patients. There was only 2 apparently. Yeah, really full.
We are protecting the NHS, but the NHS isn’t protecting the public cancelling vital treatment
Great comment
Protect the NHS Go Home isolate Including the elderly and vulnerable Meantime if you require assistance injection ; support; or GP appointment ; Operation. Don’t call us you’ve had it
And all you see of the NHS are the people at the sharp end getting the shitty end of the stick, as usual. All the top brass are having an easy ride running it into the ground. And i dare say they will get a fabulous pension & Golden handshake when a custodial sentence would of been the right thing for corruption.

@Eve Oakley is it possible that hospitals don't fill the surgery wards with contagious covid patients?
🙄
@The BadderMan it's possible, but you'd have to illustrate why before you can prove it, till then it's just childish name calling 😀
And doesn't answer my question...
@Eve Oakley So because the particular parts of a particular hospital wasn't at full capacity, that must mean none of them are? 🤔
@The BadderMan what would that have to do with not putting highly contagious covid patients in the same ward as people recovering from surgery? Which was what my question was about 😀

Sam Potts Exactly! Too many people think this virus is just the flu. My colleague thought it wasn’t real until he got it, passed it onto his father who died from it soon after. A lesson to all
It's not their fault its the government's fault NHS is run by the them so they give instructions on how to proceed and they do it to the best of their abilities . Those clowns poop the bed now they have to deal with the consequences. All of the doctors took an oath to help people and they do it not for their benefit but for the benefit of others
Actually the flu/flu like illnesses kill between 20-60k people a year- not millions. Covid has killed 1 million in less than a year. 1% of people need to be hospitalised for getting the flu compared to 20% that need to be hospitalised when getting covid.
Covid is not exactly like the flu. It is 20 times more lethal and the death rate is only so low because quarantine has slowed the spread which has enabled hospitals to keep up with the demand. As soon as hospitals run out of space and equipment, that percentage will go up. In Italy, before they got the spread to manageable levels, the chance of dying from covid rose to 7-8%.
@@lavenderskye7077 Excuse me, but your global Flu deaths statistics are off by more than a factor of 10. Actual deaths range as high as 650,000. Are you being purposefully disingenuous, or are you just bad at statistics?

Can someone please detail exactly why? What I have heard from all the medical staff I am related to or know, and what I have witnessed having just spent time in hospital, the wards are not full of Covid patients so where are the staff that usually deal with all the other ailments? Is Covid now the only issue in the world? We know ward managers have taken the opportunity to reduce availability or even just close wards which we know aids their budgets no end. My recent trips to A&E and after that surgery through a heart ward showed me that the aim was IN & OUT. I have gone through this before and the heart ward looked less busy than last time I was in there. As long as I was breathing I was going home. Rehab now doesn’t exist! Something else going on here!? 56 covid deaths a day (RIP) will take 3,325 years to wipe at all 67,982,314 UK citizens. These 56 deaths daily deaths are a small fraction of the daily baseline average of 1,615 mortalities per day (2019 published data). Meanwhile, about 2,000 babies are born here every day. Where's the existential threat?
You're a clown, the number of deaths are only being kept this low because of all the people following proper guidelines, which limits number of people that get COVID. As cases increase, the virus will spread exponentially, and what's worse is hospitals will start to run out of capacity to help people and the death rate will go up.
@@brownbagel. A clown for pointing out what the actual maths is? I thank you for your interesting, civil response. The global death rate has averaged 5,250 deaths per day since the end of March. I predict the global death count on October 21st will cross 1,130,000 fatalities and be registered here - www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries
The current number is 1,066,856.
Come back in twelve days time and see if I'm proven wrong...
The death rate % will have also dropped from 4% to 3% just before that date.
Meanwhile... stay safe... stay sane and jolly good luck !!!

Also, the 3% is of all cases - not the population. So you should have written "3% of the UKs cases is all the 561,815 people thus far iwhich come to be 16854.45 whereas the actual UK data shows that a greater number - 42,592 has died and the UK fatality percentage ratio is a staggering 7.581% - two and a half times greater than the rest of the world put together... How do you explain that?
The link provides the data. www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries
@Randomly In accurate Do you think 3% of the world's population has died from covid? That would be 234,450,000 and that's not the case. The NHS Nightingale Hospital London opened first on 3 April 2020. As of 5 May 2020, six of the seven planned hospitals had opened, and by the following month all had been placed on standby. The Harrogate and Exeter hospitals were repurposed as diagnostic clinics in June and July respectively. And free up hospitals for the people left to die at home of all the old illness the NHS are not treating any more ?

Oh dear God in heaven, you have NO idea how hospitals work! Those doctors "chatting" were doing a handover. A handover is when one shift finishes and another starts; the staff who were working at night need to tell the staff who are starting in the day the status of all the patients in the ward. When they could have sent them to the ward, where they had the specific Doctors needed! 😔 The Nurses and Doctors there are doing great to keep that Virus under Control and I could see that it's by no means easy for and on them! Deaths are among us get terrified
Ok, then I don't want to see any stupid dances performed by any NHS staff in tiktok Videos if the Hospitals are at "critical point"
That hospital looks busy....NOT. This time last year the Royal London Hospital, and no doubt every other hospital had full wards and full A&E departments. On two occasions last year we had a ten hour wait for a bed. Cases are not hospital admissions.....all those empty beds and pop up hospitals will be once again empty whilst the terminally ill are neglected.
Did I hear that right, at the height of the pandemic they had 10 people in intensive care in Bmth hospital. How many are the hospitals now seeing through anxiety and depression because of their massive over reaction. 99% recovery rate and you are killing the country. WHY.????
I watch it now for the spin and comedy effect.BBC has great editing skills. The government stripped the nhs
