- Adorable, rainbow-beaked Atlantic puffins were once so prized that they were nearly hunted to extinction. One man is responsible for their resurgence in population: biologist Steve Kress. The birds face a new challenge: climate change. As waters warm, the puffins’ most-preferred food source is moving farther away, making it difficult for adults to feed chicks. NBC News' Kerry Sanders travels to Eastern Egg Rock Island in the Gulf of Maine to learn more.

This guy deserves a medal of honor. His service to the world is unmeasurable. Thanks to him, such majestic and adorable little birds are alive and well.
Puffling has got to be one of the cutest names for a baby animal!
i had no idea puffins almost went extinct, puffins are easily my favorite bird they are so freaking cute and om glad this kind man started this project
This is a bit misleading of a video. Puffins as a whole were not going extinct. (For example, the Alaskan variety population was doing fine. ) this particular Eastern Atlantic variety was endangered in Maine as well as portions of southeastern Canada.
@hees0009 thank for letting me know
Thank you for saving these precious Puffins.
Ty for saving the Puffins!
Thank you for saving the Puffins!
You're welcome
I want to go see the puffins really bad. They are precious
Puffins have a special place in my heart. My Dad called my daughter Puffin since the day she was born,(1987) until he passed in 2015. Ok, now I am crying.
Aw, rip to your dad ❤
Thank you for showing human compassion with conscience and competency and hope.
Thank you for this report. It’s raised my awareness. Thank goodness for this biologist and his selfless work.
I pray one day...we humans will get our act together and stop the destruction we cause this beautiful Earth.
Their colors are so brilliant 🤩
I love puffins
Has Disney ever made a movie about Puffins? They should!
Yeah, totally!
I remember reading about them as a lil child totally forgot they existed and glad to hear their not extinct
Very nice footage. And a great recovery story.
Please note, however-they are hatchlings, not newborns.
😍 such beautiful birds
Had no idea that there's puffins out here, I lived close to here.
Thank you!
thank goodness we have people like this around....thank you!..
Do you know the Puffin Man?
The Puffin Man?
The Puffin Man!
Do you know the Puffin Man who lives on the coast of Maine?
I just noticed, they brought pairs from Canada, just like they did with wolves from Canada.
One big hole in the story, they forgot to say they got their breeding pairs to start the new population from Canada, where three different breeds still existed.
One of my favorite birds!! 💜
I just checked: there are an estimated 400,000 puffins off of Newfoundland.
I'm glad they're safe
I did a report when I was in elementary school, in the 80s. According to my sources, the puffin was extinct. I don't know what to think now.
Those are so cool. I didn't know they existed. Wow, glad they are OK 👍
❤️🙏🤗
Most people don't understand that the ecosystem only works if everything is in order you take one away from the equation then you'll have more predators or more pray..
omg the background music! Sims 3!
There are approximately 350 to 400 thousand Atlantic Puffins in Atlantic Canada. Approximately 12 million of breeding age worldwide and 24 million grand total. There's more to the world than just the USA ☺️✌️🇨🇦❤️🇺🇸
this is about resorting one population in it's range. lol. it's not supposed to be about the rest of the world
Where did they get the puffins if they were hunted in Maine yo extinction?
Chewbacca roasted one....
I LOVE puffins, cute, they are so loyal , gentle and curious birds on the planet. They have to be protected. especially from China, we know they like to make animals extinct or near extinction for the sake of their medicine fads. Here in the UK we protect our birds. Puffins are protected here too.
🫶 Steve for caring enough to help save the Puffins.
This little birds the puffins we need to guard them and protect them.we're destroying our World we live in. And future generations will only read 📚 about certain animals that had fo e extinct because of our own mistakes not protecting our Mother Earth and this is why we're getting all this hurricanes and big earthquakes land slides because Mother nature is restoring and healing herself from us the humans.
It's wonderful to take care of God's creation! Hallelujah to the Creator ⭐
People eat puffins!?
I don’t know how I feel about that. Puffins are cute! But what if they are tasty?
thats how the chinese feel i guess about dogs and cats too
:eniparty:
At least they got them in time they won't be doing the puffins will not be joining the ranks of the great Auk
I'll bet solar panels and ev's made this possible..........................................................................................................
Thanks to the publicity people will start to black marker the birds for the pet sensation people crave , imagine having a puffin in your back yard with a mutated dog or cat
My dad doesn’t like climate change. He loves Fox News though 🤔
clown ducks
They look so delicious I wonder how they taste
I am a captain aboard a commercial fishing boat off downeast Maine and highly recommend puffing for Thanksgiving
Unfortunately them coming back is like reintroduce wild turkey, now hundreds of car grills and headlights are being destroyed everyday day, plus turkey have eaten all the food on the floor of the forest and now partridge, pheasant and so many other ground birds are gone, basically starve and extinct
They taste like Herrings.
:(
@@danielfill9448 lol Partridge and Pheasant were both introduced and not native to North America. Turkeys are native.
