    Will this unit charge from the grid then auto-switch to battery power at a given time of day. Our hydro offers 2.4 ¢ /kwh between 11pm and 7 am every day. My thoughts are to charge batteries at that cheap rate and then auto-switch at 7 am run my house all day then switch at 11pm back to the grid for charging. Of course my home will be running on the grid between 11pm and 7am as well. In my thinking my home will be using 2.4 ¢ /kwh rate all the time. Is this correct.

    Thanks for the video. I had looked at Tesla power wall and Generac casually more pedestrian interest. I like the look on the wall but the price and internet requirement for Tesla was a red flag for me. I live in north Texas and have a daily need of 67kWh to 100kWh based on 3 years of utility consumption. So … not a small requirement. Anyway not to bore you with my problems haha. Very promising. Looking forward to the update. Checking prices, it seems inline with with expectation for turn-key. Doesn't look like the PV can be straight DC. Manuals shows going through an inverter first. Can the system provide signal to keep PV on during grid outage? Does the system require internet to function fully (minus updates of course)? Last, I have my internet, main switch, and WiFi on a small computer battery backup to run for about 20 minutes. Generator should kick in after about 10 seconds, BUT just in case .. because you know. internet :)

    • @benssolarandbattery
      @benssolarandbattery  Před rokem +1

      It takes AC coupled solar only. It will keep the microgrid alive and keep the solar running until the battery is full, then frequency shift to curtail the solar. Doesn't need internet to be fully functional, but does require it for the 10 year warranty. I'm sure a couple drops wouldn't be an issue though.

    Looking forward to the update on these. I’m having a 15.5 KW array installed with IQ8’s so this seems like it would be a perfect match for AC coupling with the least amount of modules for me.

    Love your videos keep up the great work.

    • @benssolarandbattery
      @benssolarandbattery  Před rokem

      IQ8 would be fine for this. You'll likely want at least 2 of these batteries to be able to handle all of the solar. If the solar input goes over the charging rating of the battery when off grid, the battery will frequency shift to slow the solar down or shut it off, depending on the grid profile you use for the Enphase inverters.

    How would you pick between something like this, enohase, solaredge vs a hybrid inverter with a solark or Schneider XW pro?

    • @benssolarandbattery
      @benssolarandbattery  Před rokem

      It really depends what you already have and what you want to do or power. Enphase will only work with enphase solar, solaredge I believe will only work with solaredge (or it just won't work at all). Tesla or LG would be a good AC coupled battery if you already have solar and want whole home backup. Sol-ark had built in charge controllers but can ac couple as well. It will shut your whole house down any time you update it, but can do 200a pass-through with the 15k. Schneider is better for DC coupled on or off grid, but can AC couple as well. They also just came out with a whole house transfer switch.

    Do you happen to know why they only support 4 units connected to the controller? I don't like the idea of not having much of an easy upgrade path if I miss-estimated my power budget in going off grid. They have 4 dip switches to set the address (currently 1 switch per address). Panasonic recently announced their Evervolt 13.5kWh and 18kWh battery products, which also scales to 4 units, but with a higher charge/discharge rate. It seems powerwalls scale until they run out of CAN bandwidth and then it falls on its face, but that point is ~7-8 units, not 4. Even the new Enphase 5P batteries can scale to 80kWh (16 5Ps). I'm really glad that there is a bunch of competition in the AC coupled battery space, maybe it will result in some pricing pressure to bring the $/kWh down.
    I'd love to see a follow up video now that you have had the unit for a ~4months.

But I really want to have an capacity upgrade path in case the estimate is wrong. I don't need more current, just more Kw/h for longer runs without sun in the winter. I was not planning on using the breakers in the SE box, just use the controller, PV CT connection and CAN control. It would be nice if the SE box could talk to more then just 4 batteries. They have 4 bits of CAN ID, and I'd hope there is plenty of CAN bandwidth to talk to additional devices.

    Since these are LG NMC battery cells, they're going to have a helluva time selling them. Any stationary storage system that isn't using Lithium Iron-Phosphate cells, which are much safer AND have a much longer cycle life, isn't going to attract many buyers. Nobody in their right mind would go with NMC, if they truly understand what they're buying. The only place where NMC is still relevant is where gravimetric energy density is absolutely critical, like in a handheld device or other portable electronics. With CATL's introduction of LMFP, that further reduces the market for NMC in home energy storage. There really isn't even a discussion to be had.
