    Great video, incredibly useful. I'd add one more alternative zoom that I've had good luck with and that is the Nikon 70-210 f4 constant aperture zoom. It is less commonly seen because Nikon only produced them for about 18 months, and is often confused with the 70-210 f4-5.6. It is a two-ring zoom with fantastic build quality and reasonable autofocus speed. Available second hand here in the U.S. for usually $150.

    I agree with every word said regarding this excellent piece of glass. Having previously owned it prior to changing systems, It was my first consideration when moving back to Nikon. This is possibly THE most informative review that I have seen relating to this lens, my advice: do NOT take any heed of the biased reviews on the internet from many of the American, high profile gurus, they lie, and for good reason... kickbacks, if there I’d one American Nikon lens reviewer to be trusted on Nikon glass it is “the angry photographer” who mirrors every word that this reviewer offers. In short I love this amazing lens, yes it tugs on the arms after a while carrying it, but if that is a problem to you... Go to the gym.

    Great review! I have owned the original VR model of this lens for about 10 years. In various other reviews I read so much criticism of the softness in the corners, and that it was only really good on DX cameras, that I thought seriously about selling it and getting the newer one when I moved to FX models. You have convinced me to stay with a lens that I love. I have never been able to actually see any softness in the corners on my FX cameras - with the stuff I shoot the corners are part of the background which I don't want sharp anyway.

    Is this a reasonable decision? Ditching a perfectly fine lens from 2012 for a lens from 2003?

    Never thought I'd get to this point in life, but I am damned willing to put myself in debt just to get this lens. Cheapest I've seen this lens on eBay is between $700-800, in auctions that started low and had few participants.
    I've already replaced one failing 18-55mm kit lens with the Sigma 17-50, I've bought a Sigma 105mm Macro w/ OS, and I've bought an 85mm f/1.8. Just over $1K on my Credit Line. Now, after reading up on reviews about the Sigma and Tamron varients and comparing them to the Nikkor...
    Fuck it. I'm gonna be in some hella debt, but I sure as hell am gonna work my way out of it. If I have to work myself ragged between two full-time jobs and fill all of my free time with small odd-and-end photo jobs, it'll be well *well worth it!* I just pray my D5000 doesn't die out before I begin to master the use of these lenses...

    I am one of these crazy specialty lens users. I do not regard zooms very highly because glass is not really all that transparent so the less glass the better but this seems pretty nice for its 20+ elements. I mostly shoot birds on crop with the 200-500 and some nature, products and portraits. And I actually think that most contemporary lenses are rubbish (105 1.4) and people demand it. When you take a 200 f4 your eyes fall out when you look at the RAWs and they are more vivid than your own eyes see it. In comparison, most modern lenses look like flat profiles for cinematographers.

    I realise I am very late to this party :) just got a d500 and am looking for a 70-200 f2.8 and its a choice between the VR1 and VR2 used. I will use it for wildlife and motorsport. I shop at LCE and they have both used available with a difference in price of about £100 to 200. So which do I buy and what about people's reports of focus breathing on the V2?

    • @jklenses8611
      @jklenses8611  Před 2 lety +1

      For the (relatively) small difference in price I would go for the VR2 simply because it will be a younger lens. Availability of things like SWM mechs for lenses of this era is getting steadily worse as these parts are no longer made by Nikon. My VR1 has done nearly twenty years of faultless service but it always pays to look to the future... In actual usage I'm confident that both lenses will get the job done for you but others may have more experience with the VR2 than me... :-)

    • @jklenses8611
      @jklenses8611  Před 7 lety

      I've used this combo quite often with my 70-200 when you need a bit more reach. Since it basically uses just the central area of the image to simulate an increase in focal length, there really isn't any noticeable drop in quality. Depth of field is reduced which may or may not suit your purposes. The only down side is it's quite pricey and you may be able to get similar results by just cropping the final image afterwards, given the quality of images from modern DSLR bodies. Definitely a recommended accessory for me with this lens.

      JKLenses thanks for the feedback it's greatly appreciated. The resale market on EBay for example, has TCs listed for less than full retail in, many cases, for second hand examples. Your Nikon reviews are among the best out there. I'm a hobbyist so picking up a larger zoom isn't really feasible at the moment.

    I found 2nd hand with really good condition of nikon black 70 200 f2.8 afs vr g from the camera shop with 6 months warranty. Like you said you using a this lens long time is it definitely worth to get one compare to do what I got. Thanks.

    • @jklenses8611
      @jklenses8611  Před 5 lety +2

      In my view, all that later versions of this lens have done is help to reduce the price of this version on the second-hand market :-) I have been using this lens heavily for over fifteen years and its picture quality is only ever edged out by the very best Nikon prime lenses. The initial grumble when it was released that it was too pricey has now gone. If money is tight then this is stand-out value for money and I'm certainly managing fine without VR II! Can't imagine how you would be disappointed by this lens... :-)

    your review is amazing thank you, i own the 70-200mm f4 and for the last 2 months i want to gt the f2.8 vri for the extra stop and probably better bokeh in your opinion and since you know much better than me do you think it worth it? some say is sharper the f4 but what do you think?

    • @jklenses8611
      @jklenses8611  Před 8 lety

      +saul gonzalez
      I’d be surprised if you were able to see any major
      improvements in image quality by upgrading from the f4 to f2.8 versions. The
      major benefits would be the extra stop which would extend your isolating
      ability and an all-metal professional build quality. If these two things are
      likely to make a big difference to the pics which you take then the upgrade
      might be worth it, although the fact that you bought the f4 in the first place
      suggests otherwise! J I’m always a fan of buying lenses to solve a
      particular problem or do a particular job so unless you can find particular things
      in your pics with the f4 which would be improved by the f2.8 then I’d be
      tempted to stick with the f4. A compromise might be a secondhand VR1 model of
      the f2.8 although like all the great Nikon lenses they seem to hold their price
      a bit too well when you are thinking of buying L
      Thanks for your comment and hope this helps…

    So I recently purchased a copy of the 70-200 vri, and im having an... interesting problem. The focus isnt quite functioning correctly. When i try to close focus with the lens, it will get stuck at the close focus spot on the lens, and continue trying to focus in that direction. It will sometimes slowly turn the manual focus ring. I can only assume this is not good. I purchased it from KEH.com, and their rating said it was in the "excellent" category (80-89% of what it is from new) and clearly states in their description it should be working perfectly. I have already emailed them and I am waiting for a reply. I was just curious if you have heard of this issue before? Thank you.

Be careful not to get the 70-300mm that does NOT have VR it is an optically inferior lens to the one I mentioned above. ~~
