  • ‘If somebody is paying for private education, actually they should get a tax break because they’re paying twice’
Nana Akua says everyone pays into the ‘collective pot’ which pays for state education, so people that pay private shouldn’t be taxed because it’s a double payment.

Meanwhile multinationals are avoiding tax on a collosal scale by being allowed to domicile in Ireland. They still collect 20% VAT on sales, but the UK government doesn't see a penny of it. It is theft. But no, private school fees are the problem it seems. 🙄

All VAT should be removed, from services and products. HOWEVER... if we are going to have it, all private companies should have to pay for it including private schools

Many private schools are charitable trusts, unlike private companies. This also involves them giving generous, often means tested bursaries to pupils whose parents cannot afford to pay & where a particular school’s ethos & approach would benefit the child. Not just scholarships for bright pupils, either. They also have partnerships with state schools & make facilities , etc available.

My 4 year old goes to a private school. We struggle to pay the fees. But he is deaf and is leaning to speak and "listen" with his cochlear implants. We chose private education so he could be in smaller class size and more specialised help.
This policy will make us think twice about how we educate our child.

We have to pay tax. So do the rich. They shouldn’t have got the 20% VAT taken off in the first place.

VAT was originally brought in as a Tax on LUXURY goods and items. Education is NOT a Luxury, so why the hell should education now have VAT attached to it. Does this also mean that the state schools have to pay VAT on the money they receive from the area education board? That's the way they get their funding. Public schools get their funding direct from the parents, and remember, those parents already pay toward the state education system as part of the overall taxes they pay. So they are in reality paying twice, and now look likely to have to pay VAT on the fees they pay for private education. Can anyone remember all those Labour Ministers & MP's over the years who sent their kids to Public Schools while telling the rest of us that we should not do so? People like Dianne Abbott...... she certainly send her son to public school and I know there have been many, many others....

What a lot of people dont understand (looking at some of teh comments on here) is that these schools have chritable status because they dont make a profit. All money is invested back into teh school in the same way as a local rugby club or other sports club. I have seen 3 such schools go under within a 10 mile radius of where I live and I knew some of the parents who sent their kids to them. Most then had to go to a state school which then costs the tax payer over £7,000 per year. There just wasnt enough places at other independant schools to soack up 3 collapsed schools so the state schools class sizes just had to go up instead. Be careful what you wish for and avoid the politics of envy.

Nonsense, to give tax breaks to to elite schools in insanity. I understand it’s a noble and aspirational undertaking but to give tax breaks to someone who can afford in some cases up to £60’000 per year is just wrong.
The tax break should be repealed and that money put into the school budget.
