The history of Jack in the Box through its commercials.
This video contains (almost) every JITB commercial from the early 70's to 1994, just before Jack returned as head of the company. During this era, Jack was literally blown up in 1980 in order to aim for a more "mature" image and changing its target audience to adults instead of children (like McDonald's). From 1982 to 1985 comedian Dan Gilvezan helped marketing the restaurant, making "comparison" videos and other skits. Then in the late 80's Jack in the Box introduced its minimalistic seven-note musical signature alongside the slogan "For an exciting new taste, this is the place". Despite this however, this was definitely a hard era for the franchise. It even had its name changed to Monterey Jack's in 1985 just to went back again to Jack in the Box the next year after disastrous results. And then the E. Coli breakout happened in 1993, claiming the life of four children and leaving hudreds of ills. As if all seemed to be lost, they recurred to one of the best decisions the chain has ever made: go back to where it all started and bring back Jack.
I tried to put every ad in chronological order, and in cases where it wasn't clear when the ad was released, I just put it where I thought would fit best.
This video was inspired by 82 MINUTES OF CANONICAL JACK IN THE BOX COMMERCIALS: • Video
100 thousand views! Wow! I never thought people would be so interested in these (I mean the old Jack in the Box era). Thank you all very much for watching :)
There will actually never be commercials like these.
Thank you for posting these retro commercials. They bring back great memories, and there are lots of regional commercials for stores and products I was not familiar with. Thank you!

I love how Jack casually mentions a commercial from 14 years ago.

I had a speaking part in a Jack in the Box commercial in 1975. It isn't in your collection. It was another "Now you're cookin Jack" Ad. I have a still photo from it and the recording. :)

I want shrimp. theres a jack in the box up ahead. said no one ever
Lol i disagree, sounds like a terrible decision i would make at 4am after leaving a club 🤷♂️🤣🤣🤣
they did in 1970 whatever... times have changed
Except Laverne...
She was in labor and craving fried shrimp, lol.
There's something so cozy about watching these archived commercial spots. Their Onion Rings tasted way better back then too.
Yes! They changed the recipe and are using some weird panko blend crust. They used to be slightly sweet with a whole (not diced) onion ring and a cornmeal blend breading. There Junior cheeseburgers were made with nothing more than pickle slices and secret sauce as well, and they tasted better too.
Their Onion Rings were my favorite because they were soft and tasty and were never hard as rock as they are now.
I used to love the hell outta jack in the box onion rings, but now I can't even bite into them
@@jaycahuenga6416 The Jumbo Jack looked like the size of a Whopper back then. Now, it looks about the size of a Big Mac when you remove the center bun.
Baxk in the 60's, the commercials always mentioned 'secret sauce' on the burgers. As kids, we enjoyed going there. Every order got a handful of big balloons to inflate. Goodtimes.
Jack in the box sure did look scrumptious in the 70's!!!!
nick j sure did.
@@frankdenardo8684 That late 70s ad campaign worked pretty well, I think. And their menu was nice and varied. I really think Jack in the Box jumped the shark in the 80s, starting with that Better at the Box campaign and adding ever more fancy menu items and culminating in a ridiculous attempt to change their brand and their name. They didn't fully come back to their senses until their Jack's Back campaign in the mid 90s.
Growing up in the 70s I ate at Jack In The Box with my family a lot of times! The food was delish!🤡
@@danielletripkoff4199 did Jack in the Box use mayo or secret sauce on their sandwiches in the 70's??!! And did they have the chilli cheese curly fries like they did in the 90's 😋??!!
@@CoyoteSeven Got about half-way through the video and I can see you're right 😂
Jack in the Box has never been afraid to try new things on their menu. I remember when I worked there as a team leader when the mini sirloin burgers came out and the teriyaki bowls came back.
Oh my God, I miss Jack-in-the-Box Teriyaki bowls!
I miss those mini sirloin burgers. I used to get those without onions
"Check out my bowls!" -Jack
That Christmas candle tie-in for back in the day was oddly the sweetest thing; My dad was eating 10 of their tacos during the late 70s I think it was cause he was working hard and stoned too,
I loved Jack In The Box growing up in the 1970's. For some reason later they stopped putting the Secret Sauce on their burgers, it was one of the things that made their burgers taste so different and delicious, It's one of the things that made Jack In The Box burgers famous (like McDonald's Big Mac Special Sauce), it made them stand out from the standard ketchup, & mustard everyone else uses. Shortly after that change-over I stopped going to Jack in the Box. It's too bad, cause they were great burgers then. BRING BACK THE SECRET SAUCE ! Bob. G
I am a 2000s kid, but I really want to know more about 70s era Jack In The Box. Their food did seem very good from what I keep hearing, when did the food become bad? And do you remember the animated commercials with Jack and his friends [there's only three of them on CZcams]?
They still have it y'all just ask for it 🤣🤣🤣
Was it really a secret or Thousand Island? 🤔
i used to love those fried raviolis and an ultimate cheeseburger. my mom would complain jack in the box was too expensive. 93ish and she thought paying over $4 and change for a meal was crazy. now she thinks under $10 is a steal today.
I guess this is for people who can't get enough Jack-in-the-Box. A lot of these commercials were filmed at the Jack-in-the-Box at Tampa and Rinaldi (Porter Ranch/Northridge CA), just in case you want to eat an historic location.
Somehow these commercials with like bacon ultimate cheeseburger or something like that really kinda made me very hungry.
Thank you for this compilation, but I'm more attracted to the commercials with Jack Box.
The 1979 commercial for Frings was actually the debut for the acting career of Rob Paulsen! Yep Pinky and Yakko started out as a fast food commercial!
Yes, I was looking for that commercial. Rob Paulsen is phenomenal! I met his sister at the movie theater. Paulsen was fantastic on the Frings commercial!
Carl Weezer!!!
When they brought Jack back, the food got even better!
This is the type of commercials I would watch back then, the hype, all the real-looking smiles. It seems nice.
And no unnecessary Tik-Tok esque music or slogans like "The food is the boss" trying to appeal to Gen Z's
I almost want a series of jack in the box maschot coming back from being fired and getting revenge on everyone
Baby Jack was destroyed so much he gained revenge and became their mascot. Pretty good deal.
Or... he watched his own company crash and burn so many times that he succeeded with a hostile takeover attempt.
@@arnowrld This is too old but i loved the food.
Never realized how savage Jack went in on Macca's
Back around 1974 or 1975 when they were still in the Chicago area, their tag line was "Watch out Mcdonalds!"
Dan Gilvezan, (the dude in a bunch of these ads) was the original voice of Bumblebee in Transformers. MY DUDE!
And spider man in spider man and his amazing friends.
37:37 I recall that commercial and this was made when the 1993 Jack in the Box E. coli outbreak came out. My friends talked about that commercial and laughed our asses off when we thought "Oh that's the solution. Feed a giant destroying the city some tainted hamburger beef and that'll kill him."
I've been eating Jacks for 35 years and I've never seen a jumbo jack that big
They were that big in the 70s.
How did Jacks taste back then compared to now?
This is the best fast food restaurant
25:40 "I know taquitos, and you know taquitos...do _THEY_ know taquitos?"
Narrator: "WE KNOW TAKEEDOS."
A homeless guy barricaded himself in front of the Jack drive thru recently. He then blew ass really loud. Manager chased him off with a broom...
I don't know what's funnier; the fact that a homeless guy sharded in a Jack In The Box drive-through or the fact that the manager chased him off with a broom 😂
@@jacobruiz97 it was hilarious. It was like 1AM, I'm heading home after a long shift and want a burger. The guy is just standing in front of my car at the window. Manager tells him to leave. He turns around, points his ass at the window and just lets out the loudest, gut churning wet fart. The manager blew a fucking fuse. Grabbed a broom and just smacked the guy until he ran off.
My gosh, that chicken & mushroom sandwich at about 33:00 looks SO good. Never saw or tried it. Working there in the late 70's to early 80's, there were some really great items on the menu. The early steak sandwich that Rodney Alan Ripply talked about was pricy, but REALLY delicious. The burrito (chimichanga, really) was also great. The ham links on the breakfast menu were stellar. Most of the Supreme sandwiches were really good, the beef and cheese stood out. The Swiss & bacon burger on grilled rye was terrific. The chef salad was surprisingly good, but I could have eaten the taco salad every danged day. The croissant breakfast sandwiches were buttery and tasty, and the Sourdough Jack was a true great. I live back east now, and sometimes I miss Jack.
4:07: That’s starting to become catchy
Jack in the Box is a stoners paradise and I would know
These old commercial makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
Dang, they were offering sirloin steak meals in the early 80's? Always thought Jack wanted to be known as the fancier fast food chain when I was a kid, but I didn't know the half of it.
Thank you so much for watching the video. If you liked it, please share it with others so they can enjoy it too. Cheers

I like this! Never seen some of the commercials in here before, and I was really interested!
You have to do a collection of the brilliant Dick Siddig 'Jack's Back' commercials. One of the greatest ad campaigns of all time. I'd literally pay at a movie theater to watch a couple of hours of those.
Jack is my favorite fast food but I live near Chicago so I can’t eat it regularly so watching these ads is like therapy for me. I absolutely love how they come full circle at the end with the return of Jack himself. Greatest mascot ever

Seeing these ads make me want to go to Jack in the box. Sadly, there’s no Jack in the box in New Jersey. :(

Great collection of vintage Jack in The Box commercials. There’s one that I remember seeing as a kid about a nudist family visiting a Jack in The Box drive thru. It had some funky music rift and the tag line was “We serve everyone at Jack in The Box”
I've eaten at Jack in The Box a couple of times and the food is pretty good.
Last time I ate at one of those was in 2002. We don't have any in Mexico
Wow
In my neck of the woods it's the drunk food of choice because it's cheap and open really late. The breakfast sandwiches are really good too pretty sure they're using a fresh egg on them
Ive got a feeling jack in a box was made by a couple of stoners lol
That's what I was thinking!
Especially the munchie meals
I remember back in the day when the Jack In The Box food especially the tacos really looked like they did in the commercials and tasted so good.
Never been there since I'm a midwesterner, how is the food quality now?
@@freedomcheeseburgerman5752 I work at a jack in the box restaurant at the moment as a cook and being behind the kitchen you get to see really how everything is made. Most of it, while having to be fresh since the food is almost always being sold through and through, can be sold dry or stale since they are more focused on saving money rather than the quality that’s sold. Sad n soulless tbh😂
My aunt use to work at a jack in the box back in the 80s. Well... before she passed away. I still go at jack in the box every now and then.
3:57 Election Day '20... the first time I've heard that in- what-43 years!
I work at jack in the box and It would be awesome to see some retro stuff return like the dinner in the box.
12:55 "Close enough." have no idea why but found that super hilarious. 😂
Everyone in the first commercial is likely dead except for the drive thru workers who are probably in their final years. Amazing how long life feels but how short it really is.
29:34 Jeff Conaway of “Grease” and “Taxi” fame.

What an excellent use of public resources in that first commercial
I'm glad to have seen proof that my favorite Jack in the Box items of all time (or close to it) that, sadly disappeared far too long ago. I couldn't find
Jack squat about these Jack entrees and was beginning to wonder if I had just dreamed them up in my mind.
The Cheese Nachos Supreme. And
The Swiss & Bacon Supreme Burger
Both from the mid-80's
I really wish they'd bring those back.
They gave Jack In the Box a purpose in my life....when hungry.
Thanks for posting This video and for including these former Jack Masterpieces.
I love Jack in the box. Specially the burgers, and their Homestyle ranch chicken club sandwich. And their tacos as well as their bacon cheddar wedges. Also, I love their Oreo cookie milkshakes. It’s the bomb. But, I really, really wish that they brought back those many sirloin burgers.
6:55 is that Rob Paulson? It sure sounds like him.
20:00 ha! And I'm pretty sure that's the guy who did the voice of Spider-Man in the 90s!
It is rob, I cant attest to spiderman though
That is Rob Paulson, he confirms it on Twitter, but I'm fairly sure that second actor is not Chritopher Daniel Barnes, he was about 22 in 1994, and this dude looks to be in his 30's.
@@LUNITUNZBackup Yep, that was me that just tweeted it at him this morning. Someone should ask Christopher Daniel Barnes if that's him. It really sounds like him. Like, a lot.

Back in the summer of '78, I actually WAS Jack for a day. I was working at JIB #716 in Garland, TX, and I was tapped to spend a day as Jack, in an orange and white polka-dot jumpsuit and that ridiculous giant clown head. It was about 105 degrees out and INCREDIBLY difficult to breathe with that monstrous head globe on. Good times....
I know Jack and The Shakes had costumes, but did the other Jack In The Box characters [Small Fry, Onion Ring Thing, Secret Sauce Agent, and Hamburgermeister] have costumes too? And why did corporate drop them anyway, was it really because they wanted a more mature image, or did Mcdonald's sue?
@@muppetsretrofan8873 Don't know. The JIB I worked at only had the Jack costume. The head stayed in the attic, unused, for years. I wish I had stolen it so I could have worn it to JIB to get free curly fries and Jack's paycheck. 🤪
A bacon Cheese supreme, Onion rings, coke-a-cola and an apple pie was heaven back then. . I talked to a district rep and asked for the apple pies back years ago
With all these great commercials and McDonald’s not having these items, how the hell is McDonald’s still winning

TRIVIA QUESTION - There was a commercial in the 80s or 90s, think it was Jack in the Box, was not Mcdonalds, maybe Burger king? Where the commercial has a couple of Ranch looking folks talking with their backs to the camera, saying something like: "Jack shouldnt have done it... Nope. Dont know what will happen now, do you?" IDK if it was Jack or Fred or Bob, but many thousands of people got scared thinking it was a message about something they did, and were calling police to turn themselves in?
when it was just a joke about maybe Jack in the Box or ? but people thought it was like the feds were on to them and were telling them by a commercial? Or something like that. I am not a crackpot.
