Liquification could be just as good an explanation. A small earthquake tremor could dislodge the soil, causing the ground to collapse.

The minoan civilisation desapeared under the waters and wawes of a giant tsunami caused by the explosion of the Santorin volcano, 3000 years ago. The minoan islands are close to the coasts of Turkey.

EXODUS 22:29-30 (TITHING lol) 29 Thou shalt not delay to offer the first of thy ripe fruits, and of thy liquors: the first born of thy sons shalt thou give unto me. 30 Likewise shalt thou do with thine oxen, and with thy sheep: seven days it shall be with his dam; on the eighth day thou shall give it me WOW you are supposed to your first son as a burnt offering to god, refute that and tell me I'm lying.

The engineering marvels of Byzantium has influenced Turkey to a great extent. Namely, many of the Turkish structures are copied from Byzantine examples such as Agia Sophia. The skilled sailors of the Ottomans were Greek ship builders and sailors who had knowledge of over 2000 years of the way of life of the sea. The Seljuks were initially a mountain-land tribe.
