    What's always blown my mind about this video is that he's able to set these stones easily with a simple bench pin rather than an engraving/setting vise. That takes real skill.

      Practice it , the amount off control you gain over the workpiece is well worth the efford. I seldomly work with vices or Grs benchmates while setting

    This video inspired me so much 7 years ago, so many techniques picked up here alone. Still not capable of this, one day with the right people around. My boss literally told me that a ring didn't need to buffed before setting, or the inside of the ring and porosity was just a part of the business because he didn't have the time to fill it in. Ain't going to let him ruin my reputation, at the same time I'm killing myself working with someone with no standards, and have to leave my family to get a "real" Jewelers job. Literally have 13 custom builds in the box, in a town with only 2 "proper" bench Jewelers. Love this job, hate the people i work with and the owners who enable this bs.

    FYI....I recently discovered that chlorine in tap water over time can contaminate your rhodium solution creating foggy or milky plating. If this happens to you sometimes....having a distilled water dipping jar handy to use between rinsing under the tap will solve this problem and make your solution last longer. Thanks for sharing this video....I only offer this as a gesture in return...you obviously know what you are doing.

    It is channel set. He used the hammer handpiece to lock in the baguettes on both sides before he installed the princess cuts.
    I liked how he used the wax to hold all the stones in through the backside when he hammered down the outer edge of the ring to secure the princess cuts.
    I wouldn't have the guts to use a wheel bur to trim back the hammered edge like he did before melting the wax since I'd be afraid of damaging the stones.

    Invisible set is when the stone have a channel cut into the girdle and it clips side by side on a metal rail no hammering is needed, what is done here is just simply a channel set

    • @duffcosmos6458
      @duffcosmos6458 Před 9 lety +8

      wrong....the last step in invisible setting still require compressing the metal into the gems groove to set permanently. He does this to the center row of diamonds first because he has clearance to use his hand-piece without the outer two row of diamonds in place to interfere or risk breakage. Some do this by hand with a wooden stick or bamboo skewer after all the diamonds are in place....a master like this can accomplish the same thing and still control the tool with a hand-piece as he does because it's simply faster and with even more control. the outside perimeter only butts up against metal and is done the same as channel setting but that is the only similarity. Your not very observant.

  • @CarvedMetal
    @CarvedMetal Před 10 lety

    This was very cool to watch; I've not seen invisible setting nor rhodium plating in action before.
    I'm still a bit unclear how the stones are all held in place with no metal between them. I couldn't quite tell what was being hammered on after the baguettes were set in place.
    For future videos I might recommend some audio instructions, if possible.

    I have been a 3rd generation jeweler and X diamond setter for more than 40 years and this is not exactly crap but can only be done this way if you have done the exact same ring many times before and the stones are perfectly calibrated for the particular job. I did my business when this was hardly ever the case. No two jobs were ever the same and the stones were NEVER perfectly calibrated. I made my living from turning a pile of nonsense into a work of art that hardly anyone in Hatton Garden/ the world could do or would even attempt. Working on this kind of work would have been children's play by comparison requiring very little real skill or indeed thinking. Suffice to say I made so much money performing miracles for 12 years I set myself up for life and have been a manufacturer watching other people work ever since. Benchwork is mugs work. Make money fast while you are young and healthy, then get off of that bench as soon as possible before it kills you at an early age, as it did both my father and grandfather.
