Don’t give me a hard time, it’s a cool bass line!
"You're the One That I Want" is a song written by John Farrar for the 1978 film version of the musical Grease.
Who played the bass on it? There are 6 possible bass players credited - Mike Porcaro, William David Hungate, Max Bennett, David Allen Ryan, Wm. J. Bodine, Dean Cortez and Harold Cowart. My guess would be Dave Hungate because he was a super-clean pick player.
I just realized this is my first video with this bass that I got around my birthday back in September. The bass is a Spector Euro LX-35 with only 8 being made in this format and finish which is Ultra-amber over Poplar-burl with an ebony fretboard, Aguilar DCB-G3 p/u's (OB-2 preamp) and a 35" scale. I planned on putting a Spector HAZ pre-amp in it when I got it. Someone suggested doing a few videos with the bass “as is“ which seemed like a good idea. This way I’d have something to compare it to. This is the stock bass as I got it. I recently had the HAZ pre-amp installed, but I’m still not really happy with it. It seems that the pickups have too strong a voice to really be colored by the pre-amp. My next plan is to replace these pick-ups with EMG’s. An EMG-P4 (Precision Soapbar) and an EMGJ4-Reverse (Jazz Soapbar) in the neck and bridge positions, respectively. The ”Reverse J” means that the single coil is in the front of the pick-up, more toward the neck and away from the bridge. I’m hoping that this will bring the bass’ sound more toward that of a classic, P/J Spector. - Hudba
Found this which was an answer from David Hungate himself.
"You're the one that I want" was a '62 precision with Rotosounds and a pick. I was probably using my Versatone amp as well as a direct box”.
Thanks for the info. I pinned your comment so others will see it and spread the word. I think Jack Casady used to use a Versatone amp. It was a self-contained, bi-amp system or something like that.
Just saw that on TalkBass too.
This is probably the most accurate cover Ive seen. And the soul coming from that bass is amazing.
TJH, great job on this song (as usual). Also cool that you pinned this info as I was very curious.
Great CZcams channel.
I just spoke to the son of Mike Porcaro. He told me that Mikey played on it. Hungate told him that it was mikey. So i don’t know wich player it was on this song😅
Man....your fingers move fast.....liked greased lightnin'!
Haha!
The tone of that bass is absolutely insane!
I'm glad you like it. It's not exactly what I was looking for but I'm working on it.
Exactely
Unmistakably Spector.
FACT: The ghost notes are the unsung heroes of this bassline. **chef's kiss**
Truth!
I can't express enough how much I love this bass line. Brilliant composition - brilliant performance.
I'm glad you liked it. Thanks Mathew!
This is such a good example of why learning parts to classic songs can be so beneficial to becoming a more complete musician. Some guys just want to "do their thing" and they're missing out on learning what makes a track work so well -- and in some cases why it become a hit. Not only does this song have that "fun as hell" catchy part, but it grooves really hard , yet never sounds forced. For that reason, there's a tendency to push and overplay it. You kept the relaxed nature while maintaining the drive. That's what makes it work so well.
I think I've taken something away from every song I've ever learned and that's why I've always tried my best to capture as many of the small details as I could. Thanks for another great comment, Nelson.
This is a cool bass line!
That's what I'd call a happy bass line. And, it makes the song! Well done!
This is the best version I've found on CZcams so far. Thank you!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Yeeessss
Check out the version by David Carracio...
40 years later...never knew this song had such a fun bass line.
Now you know!
This is one of the most fun basslines to play and listen - Troy you nailed the playing and your tone is killer as always!
Agreed. Thanks a lot.
Remarkable. That must be one of the very best lines ever written and played extraordinarily well by Troy.
Thank you!
Can't help but smile hearing this!
Sounds great with the bass out front.
Bravo!!
Awesome! I'm glad you liked it. Thanks.
Love this. I had no idea that loving Grease at age 10 would be a bass primer for post-14 life of Rush fandom.
I'm glad you liked it.
One of my favorite bass lines. I was in a bass forum where they were talking with someone who had personal insight into the recording of this song and he said it was definitely Hungate that played on this track. I’d have to agree too. Well executed. What a fun part to play. You have very similar taste in your bass track selections. I’ve played most of the stuff in your vids.
Very cool.
Thanks.
Always fantastic!!! 👍 Thanks to show us the power of the bass
Thank you so much.
Always loved that bass part! Wonderful job!
Cool. Thanks!
Love, love, LOVE the extra 16th notes sprinkled throughout. Almost as much as the eye-roll after, "Feel your way..."
I usually don't add anything extra...sometimes at the end, but I don't remember doing any ad-libbing on this one. Haha, I believe the eye-roll was in reaction to my brain telling me to do one (wrong) thing and my hands just doing their own (correct) thing...close call.
I never realized how much bass was actually part of this song.......this was really tight, bro. I'll probably dial in to this moving forward
Yeah, it really is a big part of the song, isn't it? Thanks.
i LOVE the bass line in this song...fan-friggin-tastic job.....
Me too! Thanks a lot!
Phenomenal man! Love that bass line.
You play so effortlessly. Outstanding job.
Thanks a lot!
I have gained a whole new appreciation for this song. Very cool bass line and another killer job Troy!
Awesome! I'm glad you liked it.
Beautiful ! Never paid attention to this bass line , and its a killer ! Show !
I'm glad you liked it! Thanks Gustavo!
It was hard not to hear this bassline in the song imo lol
That was very enjoyable to watch and looked like a real workout too. Its amazing to think it was played with a pick on the recording. Thanks so much.
Thanks, I'm glad that you liked it. I know (about the pick), right?
Just Incredible!
Thanks!
I love this bass line! You did an amazing cover as usual. Cheers !
Thanks so much.
So smokin. Well played and just an outstanding bass line. This brought me so much joy. Thank you for posting.
Thanks a lot. It is a fun song, isn't it? Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
outstanding ! never fail to impress.
Thanks so much!
It's one of my favorite bass lines from the very first time I heard it. You play it great!
Awesome! I'm very glad that you liked it, Dave.
Absolutely love your bass covers 😎🤟

Glad you liked it!
Thanks for this excellent tutorial. This song is one of a dozen that made the list for my band during our winter break.
Awesome! I hope it was helpful David.

Thank you and same to you.
Exactly my thoughts! Cool bass line!
It is a great bass line, isn't it?
Sir, you are the best in the business. I've played music since 1962.
Thanks so much, you are too kind.
Had to learn this quickly, watched 9 videos, yours was the best and most true to the feel of the song. Awesome job!!
Great to hear. Thanks Tarman!
The bassline is what really made this song, and as always, you killed it! What I would give to have your talent.
I think it did too. Thanks! Time and patience is all it takes.
Fabulous!
Thanks Jay!
Love to watch you play I picked up so much and learn so much from you thank you very much
Thank you kindly, it was my pleasure!
what a blast!
Troy, just great. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Always loved this bass line. You crushed it as always, Troy.

Thanks a lot. I'm glad you liked it.
Great choice, excellent job as always
Thanks a lot.
I Just love your videos! TY for it
Aw, thanks a lot. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Fantastic playing on one of our favorite songs ever. When my wife and I hear it, we do the duet parts lol We had a great time this year watching and singing along with the re-release in the theaters. One song I want to learn. No I can from the master! Happy Holidays, Troy!
Haha! Do you do that, even in public? Thanks you and same to you!
Wasn't expecting this tune :) Well done, and how can anyone not love Olivia Newton-John!
SURPRISE! Thanks.
That was a pleasant surprise! Well done. I remember wanting to play that bassline before I even know I wanted to play bass. Some great playing altogether on that soundtrack.
Thanks.
Troy - Thanks for the extended playing at the end of the song - which I think many of us would appreciate you're doing as often as you feel inclined...As for anyone that gives you a hard time over this song, may they be haunted throughout the holiday season by both the Ghost of Christmas Past AND the Ghost of Christmas Future..:-) And speaking of the season, hope you're having a grand one so far. :-) Larry
Amazing job, my friend! You rock!
Thanks so much Kiko!
You know...I never realized how cool of a bass line this was back in the day. Good tune to practice ghost notes too:)
Well played, great sounding Spector, but most importantly wishing you and Lynn happy holidays with family, friends and the best of good health to all of you.
It is a great example of the power of ghost notes, they are nearly as important as the notes actually played in this song. Thank you very much and we wish you the same.
always great tone and another amazing job troy .. and yeah it's a cool line
Thank you very much.
Nice bass line, you play fantastic. I always check your video. Congrats👍👍👍🤘🎸
Thank you very much!
GREAT bass line, and perfectly executed...cheers mate, you gave an old Grease fan a big smile today! :)
Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it
No hard time here, completely agree with you. Grease the musical is chock full of cool bass lines. Thanks for the video and Merry Christmas (or well wishes of your choice) and a Happy New Year to you and yours.
Good. Maybe I'll have to scan the soundtrack for another potential cover. I think I remember the title track being a good one? Thanks for watching and Happy Holidays to you as well.
and the chicks LOVE when you play this!!!!!
You made my day thank you, now i know which bassline i'm going to learn next ;)
Good performance and nice song. Glad to find this in CZcams recommandations.
Awesome! Thank you very much, I'm glad you liked it.
Had to revert back to this amazing video today in memory of the late Olivia Newton John who passed away today at age 73.
Yeah… So sad.😢💔
@@TJH3113 So good to be alive and experience all these fine people and musicians. Thanks again Troy. Absolutely perfect cover. Great ear! Seems like the biggest thing I see with bass players is playing wrong notes within a scale on a fast lick. Doesn't stand out to the layman but sounds like a dissonant to someone that recognizes it. You've always been spot on in not only playing the right notes, but the most important aspect to all of it..... Feel and timing. Incredible! Oh, and Happy upcoming Halloween! Those masks are coming in to a very appropriate time of year for them. :)
Another great Spector
Wow as usual the baseline is way more funky than I thought, will be learning this one thanks for that
I hope you liked it and that you find it helpful.
Awesome, man! One of my all-time favorite bass lines! And your tone and feel add a special "KICK" to the tune! Much appreciated! I used to have the 5-string version of that exact bass - I had to sell it due to hard times a few years back. I sure do regret it!
Thanks a ton! I'm sorry to hear you had to sell the bass. I hope you're in a position to buy the bass of your dreams soon.
That Spector looks and sounds amazing. Didn't know the bassline on this song was so sophisticated but so cool as well. Excellent job as always!
Thanks. It's a bit "glassy" sounding on the top-end for me. Glad you liked it!
The tone on that bass is excellent. You make it look so easy. The end part is exceptional. Great vid!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
I don’t know what it is about it, but I keep coming back for more of this video!
I thought this one came out pretty good myself. It was a lot of fun.
Hey...the song is done! Haha. Loved this. Brought a smile to my face. Makes me want to learn this!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Quick crisp and awesome bass line no hard time from me!! Great cover as always Troy 🎸....love that bass as well
Thanks a lot.
Excellent!!!
Thank you.
I love it! Again, brilliant playing Troy!!! I could watch and listen all day long. Thanks my friend!!!!!! :-0
Thanks Marvine.
That is seriously good work. Especially love that slide down from the A on the D string with your ring finger at the end of the chorus part - with that tone that is utter filth! Gonna have to go and learn this now - thanks for the inspiration 👍
Thank you very much!
Grew up watching Grease. Thanks Troy, awesome job!
Cool. Thanks!
The best bass cover!
Thank you!
Excellent job! Always liked this song for the bass, gets you moving before you know it. Happy holidays to you and yours!
Thanks a lot and same to you.
This is so beautiful :) The tone of your bass too :) Kudos and thanks TJH3113.
Thank you kindly!
Great Job as always..Man you got that Spector growlin!
Thanks. Not as much "growl" as I'd like. I find the top-end a little too "glassy".
Amazing!
Thank!
I love watching you play bass,. Just Awesome,..
Thanks.
An irony. There are quite a number of songs that I didn't much like growing up. Some years later, I discover many of them have a really nice bass groove. This one of them. Thank you Troy.
That's the way it goes! Thanks Dale.
Great technique! Suberb tone! You play with feelings! Well done
Thank you very much. I'm glad you liked it.
great cover and a beautiful bass!
Thank you.
I can't believe I haven't checked this one out yet... Absolutely brilliant and ALOT more difficult than I expected.... Well done
It really was a challenge. Thanks.
Well done brother. Thanks for playing on after the track finished. That was a neat idea. I'd hang onto that concept in future videos. It's very helpful.
Wish you and yours well in the coming new year. I really appreciate the work you put into these clips. They are a real gift.👍
Thank you. Same to you and thanks again for the kind words.
@@TJH3113 My pleasure sir.
I agree with Ric Pix...love the playing beyond the track! Amazing playing as always!
Yes.
Frighteningly funky
I remember back years ago I played in the band for a grease musical, it was one of the most fun shows I've played. !!!
Very cool.
Yeah that is a great bass line. Well done!
Thanks.
Wow what a groove!
Great line, isn't it? Thanks.
@@TJH3113 yeah. Played with passion.
Great job!!! Your extension after the music stopped is a nice touch.
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it.
nice work. spicy bass jam. You nailed it!!
Thanks a lot!
Hey there Troy!!! I know it's been a lil while since I posted a comment onto your wonderful video's here, but WOW..........this one was GREAT!!! When I read the title of this one,I was like "Are You KIDDING ME? Has he LOST HIS MINE? " LOL. But every single time I've heard this song and listened to it,I never ONCE truly HEARD the actual "bass" line in it!!! Basically due to it sorta being drowned out in the mixing on the track and on the television/movie track of it as well. But listening to YOU play this one,WOW..........not only am I impressed with the bass-line,but it gives a whole new perspective to this song as well, because in all honesty,I never much cared for this tune, but NOW........I'm liking it!!! Haha. GREAT Video Troy and that bass is lookin fine too!!! :)
Thanks so much. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I never know which covers are going to go over "big" and was surprised at the response to this one.
I appreciate your videos because they show me why I like a lot of the songs that I do. I did get my daughter a Matsumoku ZZB Explorer as her first bass, so I am thrilled as she learns music on it. Merry Christmas!
Thank you so much, I'm glad you've found some redeeming quality in my covers. Some incredible basses came out of the Matsumoku factory. I hope she falls in love with playing. Same to you!
Wicked bass line, excellently played Sir.
Thanks!
I love the ghost/pickup notes in this one. Thanks for sharing!
That sort of thing is right up my alley. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, Ben.
And those deliciously placed slides, too. Yum!
This is utterly awesome! One of the greatest bass lines ever played by a true professional! I salute you sir!
Wow, thank you! I'm glad you liked it.
@@TJH3113 I hope you don't mind, but I shared this on Facebook. The sound you are getting, plus your mastery of the instrument is something I thought people should see. Especially nowadays, when people need a little inspiration. Cheers!
The mighty David Hungate would be proud! You slayed this! Technique and tone dude. Awesome.
Do you think? Thanks so much Patrick.
Merry Christmas!
Great song and a nice present for us all!
Same to you. Glad you liked it.
